Bea, Hello. Thanks for your reply. Did you see the e-mail from Sue? I have pasted part of it below. Thomas Alvin REED was born May 1, 1857 in Lewistown. He died in Chicago. I think his parents are John S. REED and Elizabeth REED. I do not know if they were born in PA or who their parents were. I tried to look at the 1860 Federal Census and before, but only the Head of Household is listed, so it really is not very useful. They both probably died in PA. As a footnote, there might be something interesting about Elizabeth Reed in the old newspapers. My father wrote something (back in the 1930s when he was a boy) about his great-grandmother having lived a "true life adventure." (This is probably a mystery I will never solve...but you never know.) I am not sure if it is this great-grandparent. But, is there any way I can access old Lewistown newspapers online? If you find anything about Thomas Alvin, John or Elizabeth, please let me know. I greatly appreciate your help and time. All the Best, Sharon Sue's e-mail: The family is in the 1850 Derry twp, Mifflin census, the 1860 Granville twp, Miffliln census, the 1870 Derry twp, Mifflin census and in the 1880 Lewistown, Mifflin census. From the various censuses, it seems that they had 12 children: 1) Susannah C., born abt 1838/39 2) William H., born abt 1840/41 3) John H., born abt 1842 (may have married Clarissa) 4) Albert James, born abt 1843/44 5) Mary E., bron abt 1844 or 1846 6) Elmira (Caroline), bron abt 1857/58 7) Edmund, born abt 1850 or 1852 8) Nathan B., born abt 1853/54 (did he go to Illinois, a schoolteacher?) 9) Thomas, born 1857 (did he go to Illinois too?) 10) Ada Alice, born abt 1858 11) Laura May, born abt 1860 12) Emma R., born about 1863. >From: "Bea Rutherford" <[email protected]> >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [PAMIFFLI] Reed family, Derry, Mifflin >Date: Fri, 25 Mar 2005 20:57:29 -0800 > >Sharon, >I have one heck of a time with the Reed families. ......I was told that >they >moved out of state for awhile to Missouri....I have not found any of that >information in the book that I own on Movings............I do though have >all on George and Rebecca Jane Henry on down.....I also know that Jonathan >Henry and Elizabeth Hassinger are Rebecca's parents. Sharon, I have one heck of a time with the Reed families. ......I was told that they moved out of state for awhile to Missouri....I have not found any of that information in the book that I own on Movings............I do though have all on George and Rebecca Jane Henry on down.....I also know that Jonathan Henry and Elizabeth Hassinger are Rebecca's parents. George and Rebecca are buried right next to her parents Jonathan and Elizabeth Henry. As are a few of their children. Was your Thomas Reed born and was he to have died in Mifflin County ? I am trying to see what I can find on him in all the books that I own.......If he died in Mifflin County...........I can then check out some of the cemeteries to see if I can find where he was buried. Did he go to " Missouri " with some of the other Reed family members ? My George Reed and Rebecca had a son Thomas Daneil Reed.he lived in Millerstown, Perry County, Pennsylvania ..he was born on Jan 4, 1869.... I have had alot of problems with my Reed family as well..........I can not find anything on my Walter Roy Reed..........again some of these I do not think want to be found......or, it is something that is very simple that we are just missing ! Bea, Thanks for your reply today. Did you ever have a chance to see if this family was in your resource books? (no rush--anytime is greatly appreciated) Do you have any suggestions on how I should continue this research? Thank you, All the Best, Sharon, [email protected] Bea, Thanks for your reply and your kind offer. Thomas Alvin Reed was born May 1, 1857 in Lewistown, PA. His parents were John S. (born abt 1815) and Elizabeth M. (born abt 1816). John is listed in the 1870 Census as a farmer. The other members of the household on the 1870 Derry, Mifflin Census were: Edmund (born abt 1852) Nathan (born abt 1854) Susan (born abt 1844) Ada A. (born abt 1858) Laura (born abt 1860) Emma R. (born abt 1865) That is all that I know. There is a John Reed listed on Censuses prior to 1870, but I do not know if it is him because they only listed the "Head of Household" on those Censuses. Thomas Alvin Reed emigrated to the Chicago area in the late 1800s for work at the Chicago World's Fair. I would greatly appreciated if you would forward information to me about anything that you might find. Pat, Thanks for your reply. I have not researched the family back that far yet. According to the 1870 Federal Census there were two older people, probably grandparents, living with the family--Thomas Reed, born abt 1807 and Mary M. Reed, born 1806. If you have a chance, please e-mail me your REED information. Perhaps I can make a connection. Sue, Thank you. This information is very helpful. My great-grandfather was Thomas A. Reed. I have been told that went to Chicago to find work at the Chicago World's Fair. I did not know that Nathan went to Chicago, too. How did you find that out? I am trying to find out more about the family. I believe that his parents may have been John S. and Elizabeth M. Do you have any suggestions on how to find out more? Your George Reed appears to be the son of Daniel and Catherine Reed of Armagh twp, Mifflin, Pa. He is found working on someone's farm in the 1850 Armagh census at age 13 but is back home in the 1860 Armagh census at age 23 (wrongly transcribed as Rud). Rebecca J. Henry seems to be a daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth Henry, alos found in the 1850 Armagh twp census. Sue
The family is in the 1850 Derry twp, Mifflin census, the 1860 Granville twp, Miffliln census, the 1870 Derry twp, Mifflin census and in the 1880 Lewistown, Mifflin census. Hope this helps out
Sharon, I have a REED line in my family. There is David and his wife Jane, both born in the late 1700's. I show them with 8 children. One of the daughters married into my TROUP family. Most of my REEDS were in Juniata County. If this might be a connection to your line, let me know and I will send more information. I looked up Samuel Hughes in the census to determine his family names. There are only 2 cemeteries in that town and neither has your Samuel, or family. I checked all Mifflin County cemeteries and did not find him, or any of his family, anywhere. Since Newton Hamilton, Mifflin County is just across the river from Mount Union, Shirley Twp, Huntingdon County I would suggest you might want to post this query on the Huntingdon County rootsweb board. It is where I would look if it were my search. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. *E*

I wonder if anyone among those researching Hoop/Hoops can solve the problem of Adam Hoops (d. 1771), the wealthiest man in Pennsylvania at his death, who had been a barrelmaker, Cumberland County justice, army contractor, and Philadelphia merchant. He is claimed as Scotch-Irish and as German, based on his surname. All the best, Richard MacMaster
