Can someone tell me what year Mercer Co was formed and from what counties. My Shannon Co.. Mahans came from Mercer Co according to one of original brothers obit. James Mahan Jr's obit stated he was born in Mercer Co Pa Aug 10, 1811. He had one older bro William born in Pa in 1810. Parents believed to be James(SR) and Jane Mahan but the census is not consistent with this, unless they were living with one of their sets of parents. Have not found a marriage record for them either. James Sr father believed to be William. Legend states William Mahan came thru Shannon Co in 1779 and 1799 (Believe it was 1799) with a hunting party of Delaware Indians then returned home and persuaded his family to come back to MO with him. After the above children were born there was Wallace b. Ohio 1816, John b. Ohio 1817 Grace and Jane born 1822 and 1823 Ind and Samuel born 1826 Ind. They were in Mo in 1830 named spelled Mchan. 2 more children born after 1830 and Jane listed separately in 1840. Have joined Mercer Co Gen Society in the past and was given info re: William Mahan being there but need to find marriage and census for James and Jane. thanks in advance gkile@semo.net
