In 1833, the Nobbs family (father, 3 boys and a 3 yr. old girl) stopped at Mercer on their way to Pittsburgh from Canada. The wife and mother had died on shipboard on the trip from England. A Judge Hogue and wife took the little girl, Abigail, into their home. The father and boys proceeded to Pittsburgh. Abigail stayed in Mercer for about 14 years and then joined her brothers.
