I've just heard back from AOL as to what the problem is reaching the Mercer County Genealogy site www.rootsweb.com/~PAMERCER You can download this information, as it is a rather lenghty explanation with several "fixes" for the problem. Basically the problem lies within the AOL software, the cache files and what version of their software your computer is running. I hope this helps those of you who have been having the problems viewing our site. I'm including the message as it was sent to me, so that you have the contact name, etc. at AOL, should you need further information from them. I'm happy to report that a lot of folks have seen our new pages - over 2600 "hits" (people looking at the main page) in the three weeks the new pages have been up. My name= is Homer and we are pleased to serve you with your inquiry and provide you = the appropriate solution to your recent concern.=20 I apologize for the inconvenience that you have been experiencing with Gener= al Protection Fault (GPF) errors while using America Online (AOL). I unders= tand your frustrations and I want to assure you we are here to help you. Th= e information to resolve your question involves many factors. In order to a= ssure I completely answer your question, I will address all of these factors= . Please print this mail for future reference, as it is lengthy. To print = this mail:=20 1. Go to FILE on the menu bar. 2. Select PRINT. If you are getting a GPF, please be sure to write down the address where it = occurred if you need to write us back. To get the information we need to tr= oubleshoot this problem, follow the steps below when the GPF occurs. 1. Click the CLOSE button on the GPF. 2. Click the DETAILS button. 3. Write down the information in the first lines. For example: "<UNKNOWN> MODULE AT 0000 :XXXX:XXXX". 4. Mail this information back to us along with system information: a. Computer type, make and model. b. Memory installed. c. Modem make and model. d. Programs running at the time. You can get this by using the CLOS= E=20 PROGRAMS list. See below under step B. A General Protection Fault (GPF) occurs when a Windows application or Window= s itself has attempted to access memory addresses that have been allocated t= o another application. This often happens due to conflicting programs runni= ng, having insufficient available free memory, low system resources or even = damaged software. There are several things you can check to resolve the GPF= problem you are having. Before you do anything else, if you get a GPF, always exit Windows and resta= rt your computer. This will avoid continuing problems.=20 A) MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/SYSTEM RESOURCES B) INSUFFICIENT AVAILABLE MEMORY OR CONFLICTING =20 PROGRAMS C) DAMAGED SOFTWARE A) MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/SYSTEM RESOURCES=20 To use America Online (AOL) for Windows 95, you MUST meet the following syst= em requirements: - Pentium or 586 class computer - 16 MB installed RAM - 20 MB hard drive space (minimum), for installation you need 50 MB free = hard =20 drive space. - 14.4 (or better) modem /or a TCP/IP connection - Windows 95 - 256 color monitor or better NOTE: While AOL may run with less than the minimum requirements, we only=20 support it running on a computer meeting or exceeding those list= ed above. B) INSUFFICIENT AVAILABLE MEMORY OR CONFLICTING =20 PROGRAMS If the minimum memory requirements for AOL are met (16 MB RAM), attempt to i= ncrease the available memory by following these steps: =20 NOTE: Before making any changes to your System Configuration files, you may= =20 want to print out the original files or make copies of them. To= print out=20 the file once you have the System Configuration Editor open:=20 - Click the word FILE at the top of the screen. - Select PRINT. =20 To make a copy of the file, please refer to your Windows documentation on co= pying files. =20 1. To verify the total amount of RAM installed is at least 16 MB RAM: a. Click START on the TASKBAR. b. Select SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL. c. Double-click the SYSTEM icon. d. Verify that at least 16 MB RAM is indicated under COMPUTER. 2. Close programs running in the background. a. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL on your keyboard. b. From the close programs list, one at a time, highlight each progr= am running =20 and then select END TASK to close the program. c. Close all programs except Explorer and any programs that need to = be=20 running for your modem. (Some examples of modems that may=20 need software running in these lines are IBM Mwave, Digicom, USR= =20 WinModem, AT&T WinModem, etc. Check with your modem manual for= =20 more information). 3. If there is at least 16MB RAM, increase the amount of memory available t= o Windows applications by disabling programs. Follow the steps below to = =20 review your WIN.INI file: a. Click START on the TASK BAR. b. Choose RUN. c. Type SYSEDIT in OPEN and click OK. d. You should get a larger window - SYSTEM CONFIGURATION =20 EDITOR - with several smaller windows inside of it. Click on th= e =20 C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI window title bar to bring it to the front. =20 e. If there are no programs running for your modem in the RUN=3D or th= e =20 LOAD=3D line place a semi-colon ( ; ) in front of each line. (Some= examples =20 of modems that may need software running in these lines are IBM Mw= ave,=20 Digicom, USR WinModem, AT&T WinModem, etc. Check with your =20 modem manual for more information). C. DAMAGED SOFTWARE If the problem continues, your copy of the AOL software may be damaged. To= fix this you will need to uninstall and reinstall your AOL software from a = disk or download. You will need to restart your computer before uninstallin= g AOL.=20 Before you uninstall the AOL software, you may want to move the following fi= les to prevent losing potentially valuable information. =20 1. Follow the directions below to save these files.=20 a. Double-click on MY COMPUTER. b. Double-click the C DRIVE icon. c. Double-click the AMERICA ONLINE 4.0 folder to open it. d. Find the files listed below. One at a time click them with your l= eft mouse=20 button, hold the button down and drag the files to your Desktop t= o save =20 them.=20 - Downloaded files - Usually located in the \America Online 4.0\DOWNLOAD = =20 directory. =20 - Address Book/Personal Filing Cabinet - This information is stored in th= e =20 America Online 4.0\ORGANIZE directory. There will be one file for each= =20 screen name. This file stores all the information from the Address Boo= k and the =20 Personal Filing Cabinet, including Flash Mail and Favorite Places.=20 - Text or log files - Text files that you may have saved may be placed lo= cated in =20 any America Online 4.0 directory. =20 - Custom Modem Profile - The MDMCSTM.DAT will be located in the \America = =20 Online 4.0\MODEMS directory.=20 - Personal Spelling Dictionary - The name of this file is PD01.UD and it = is located=20 in the America Online 4.0 folder. - The AOL install file - If you downloaded AOL 4.0, you will need to save= the=20 setup file before uninstalling any copies of AOL. To do this: a. Click START on the TASKBAR. b. Select FIND, then FILES OR FOLDERS c. In the NAMED field type AOL4095. Make sure the LOOK IN box is set to MY COMPUTER, then click FIND NOW. Windows should find a folder called AOL4095 as a subfolder of an AOL folder.=20 The AOL4095 folder will contain the setup file for AOL 4.0. If you have an AOL 4.0 CD, you can skip this step. =20 2. To uninstall America Online 4.0: a. Select START from the TASKBAR. =20 b. Select SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL. c. Double-click the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS icon.=20 d. Highlight America Online in the window that opens up, then select= =20 ADD/REMOVE at the bottom of the window. The Uninstaller searches your computer for installed copies of AOL. e. From the resulting list, highlight the copies of AOL you need to = uninstall and click NEXT, NEXT again, then FINISH. 3. REINSTALL THE AOL SOFTWARE FROM CD a. Insert the CD into the computer.=20 b. If the Installer does not auto-run, click START, then=20 RUN. In the command line box type, X:\SETUP (X being=20 the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive), and press ENTER. c. Select the option Adding your existing AOL account to this=20 computer then click NEXT. Follow the prompts to install a new copy of AOL. d. After AOL is installed, sign on as NEW USER or EXISTING USER. On the registration screen, select the option You already have a= n AOL account you'd like to use. You will then be prompted to type in you existing screen name and password to sign back onto your = account. 4. REINSTALL FROM THE DOWNLOADED FILE a. Locate the AOL4095 folder you moved to the desktop earlier. b. Double-click the folder to open it. There should be two files ins= ide the=20 folder: SETUP.EXE and SWITCHER.EXE.=20 c. Double-click SETUP.EXE to begin the installation. c. Select the option Adding your existing AOL account to this computer then click NEXT. Follow the prompts to install a new copy of AOL. d. After AOL is installed, sign on as NEW USER or EXISTING USER. On the registration screen, select the option You already have a= n AOL account you'd like to use. You will then be prompted to type in you existing screen name and password to sign back onto your = account. Once you have registered your software, sign off of AOL.
