Twentieth Century Biographical Dictionary of Notable Americans. Volumes I-X. Boston, MA: The Biographical Society, 1904. GILLESPIE, Eugene Pierce, representative, was born at Greenville, Pa., Sept. 24, 1852; son of Alexander Dumars and Nancy R. (Linn) Gillespie; grandson of David Gillespie, and great-grandson of Thomas Gillespie, who emigrated from county Tyrone, Ireland, settled near Greenville, Mercer county, Pa., in 1818, and married Hannah, daughter of Alexander Duncan, who had emigrated from county Tyrone, Ireland, in 1800. He attended the common schools, Allegheny college, Meadville, Pa., 1868-70, and St. Michael's college, Toronto, Canada, 1870-72, graduating in 1872. He read law in his father's office, was admitted to the bar in 1874 and practised in his native town. He was married, Nov. 25, 1880, to Ella Davidson of Sharon, Pa. He was chairman of Democratic county and state conventions and was a representative from Pennsylvania in the 52d congress, 1891-93. He was struck by a train at a crossing at Greenville, Pa., and died from the injuries received, Dec. 16, 1899." I was excited to find this biography for it seemed to shed a little more light on Thomas Gillespie's wife Hannah. There was a lot of speculation on whether she was a DuMars . This was the only thing I have found in reference to Hannah's possible surname. Like you I am very leery of all the details in Mercer County History books but this gives us a place to look. Many people were misreading the "biography" and thought this Hannah was David Gillespie's wife, which we know better. By the way you and I share Thomas Gillespie and Alexander DuMars ancestors. I would very much like to fill in more of your line although I have gathered alot because of your grandfather's unfortunate demise. Thomas Benton Gillespie was my line. I hope we can exchange information. I have a large file on the DuMars and Gillespie's. I thought I had sent Mary Ellen copies of the documents and photos of the grave. Please get in touch with me! Liz
