Linda, Thanks for the prompt and courteous reply. It looks like I may have an uphill battle ahead of me. It seems a lot of Irish migrated to the Warren/Mercer County areas of Illinois. It was a migration stop off point to Iowa and points west and an escape from St. Louis and was easily accessible by boat from St. Louis and points eastward in the early U.S. It also was a growing Irish settlement area that provided two chief occupations amongst Irish workers: farming and mining; at times both being contained on the same farm land and the uniqueness of being able to farm and mine at the same time. Also, the Irish wanted to escape the racial bigotries they encountered in the eastern cities. This is the dilemma I've got. My grandmother Annie was born Anna Hutton, Monmouth, Ill. 1898. Her father was John Humphrey. There is much confusion in regards to John Hutton - Humphrey. Even the press and community back then expressed confusion over who was who and where they fit exactly. It was even expressed in an obituary. My great grandfather was born as John Humphrey to Edward Humphrey and Sarah Long and was born in Mercer County, PA., ca. 1861/62 according to his marriage license. Some time after birth, but no doubt while young, his father Edward was killed by runaway horses and his mother remarried a man named John Hutton. At times John would use his birth surname and at others would assume the surname of his step-father, John Hutton. To complicate matters, he had a son whom he named John. I have to assume that the information he provided on his marriage application/license is accurate and correct. Hopefully this will get posted to the PAMercer group and others may connect the names and provide clues. Nevertheless I will join the group and see if someone can offer clues. Thanks again ...
