The Mercer Co. Genealogical Society does obit lookups for a fee of $3 with a death date. The volunteers at the society have worked many years on abstracting the Sharon Herald. The Herald stopped putting the full obit online on their web site, most likely because of copyright laws. The Herald is supportive of the Gen. Soc. with obit requests because we are a volunteer society and none of our members are compensated for their time or all of the driving expenses these lookups incur. The society uses all of the money raised to buy materials for the society. With so many of the books, cemetery books, microfilm, etc., being constantly stolen from the library, we have to continually spend more money to replace these items. With the competition of others doing lookups, the society is losing much needed income. Last year the society was able to purchase a microfilm copier and many new books and research items. The obituary data bases which took years of work to read and type now had to be taken off the freely accessed computer which was used by all for their own family research and now can only be viewed on Tuesdays when volunteers can be there.
