Penn. This is what I have on that Joseph Black: Born abt. 1791 of Springfield, Mercer Co., Penn.; died 1843; married Nancy Robinson? I do not have a source quoted for this marriage so it is unverified. In a letter dated 13 Mar 1969 to Miss Ruth Hazel Black (now deceased) from Steven Coulter it states: Dear Miss Black, In going over my records I found some notes on Blacks that my cousin Genie Coulter gathered for the General Hugh Mercer D.A.R. you may already have this information, (Steven says) but here it is: ---Center Church Cemetery--- Henry Black, 1789-1860, soldier of War of 1812 Alexander Black, 1794-1853, soldier of War of 1812 JOSEPH BLACK, another brother, also served in the War of 1812; grave not located. Adam Black, another brother, served in the militia some time later, but we do not find his record in the war of 1812; grave not located. Robert Black, another brother, 1800-1848, died while serving as a member of the state legislature at Harrisburg, also served in the militia after the War of 1812. Sincerely, Steven Coulter [My guess would be that Steven Coulter is also deceased.] The following information is from an internet site found in Oct 2004 at: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~pamercer/PA/Military/1812/1812listb.htm> Site entitled: "MERCER COUNTY ANCESTRAL HEROES IN WAR OF 1812 B" [I think this means Company B] "BLACK, Joseph; Private, under Capt. Junkin, Col. Christy's Battalion, Harrison's army; born 1791; recruited from Mercer County; brother to Adam, Henry and Robert Black". "The Black Family" biography also posted at this site says Joseph Black was still alive in 1888. That's all I know about Joseph. I hope it helps. Gail

    2. Sharon Haggerty
    3. There is a Shannon connection in my family. Mary Ann Shannon married George Haggertie in county Cork in 1819. Their 4 eldest children were baptised in Kilmeen parish, roughly half way between Dunmanway and Clonakilty, county Cork. In 1827 they came to Mercer County PA, and they are buried in the Boyd cemetery there. Three of George's brothers settled in Canada, a bit north of what is today Belleville, Ontario, near Lake Ontario. He also had 3 sisters who settled near him in Mercer County. I have wondered if the Shannons in Mercer might be related to Mary Ann as many of these early immigrants definitely settled in family groups. 1. I have Shannon ancestors, too.
    2. William Shannon married Margaret Frew in 1846. Two of their children were Mary J.Shannon and Samuel Frew Shannon. The Shannons and Frews came to the U.S. in the 1830s from around the Larne area in N.Ireland.

    3. I agree. 50 years is long enough to wait. I can understand privacy, but some people doing genealogy and wanting records on their family and other's won't be alive if they have to wait 72 years. It might help break through alot of brick walls too. Genealogy is a wonderful hobby and is growing larger everyday in the U. S. Let us see what's out there. ----- Original Message ----- From: <RussDLentz@aol.com> To: <PAMERCER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, March 22, 2005 7:30 PM Subject: [PAMERCER] releasing the census earlier > Hi everybody! > > There are all kinds of petitions out there to do all kinds of things. 3. I think only genealogist will care about fifty year old facts I know cemeteries are not regulated and if some one is buried and 50 years later you can't find the records no one seems to care. this privacy act is a joke Do you know you can get a social security no from the death list.?
