    3. Birth and death certificates can be gotten from Vital Records in New Castle, Pa., they start at 1905. Prior to 1905 death records are at the Mercer County Courthouse. You would have to have a death date for sending to vital records. Debbie

    3. Denise, I think the John REA, b. 1802, might be the same John REA I have, who married Sarah DANNALS (DANIELS); she was the daughter of Isaac DANNALS (DANIELS) and Nancy Ann HAZLETT, of Slippery Rock Twp., Mercer Co. Nancy was Isaac's second wife. Sarah Daniels was b. 1812, and her father died in 1813. Nancy Daniels remarried to my ancestor, William NELSON, about 1815. It was his second, possibly third marriage. They had no children, and William died in 1824, leaving Nancy as the sole heir to his estate. Nancy died in 1836, naming her two children by Isaac Daniels as John Daniels, and Sarah REA. John REA is also named in the will. I have a transcribed copy of the entire document, if you would like me to send it to you. Do you know anything further about John and Sarah? 3. I spent a few days in Mercer about 3 years ago--there was more than I could handle! The courthouse in Mercer has copies of very old wills (I found one for my ggg grandfather's brother-in-law who died in the 1840s) and there are people at the Sharon Library to help researchers on Tuesdays. The library has an excellent collection. There were other resources that I never got to in the town of Mercer, and hence I don't remember the details about them. I'd suggest starting with the Sharon library on a Tuesday. Everywhere I went the people were truly wonderful! There is also info dealing with naturalization records but I don't remember where that source is--the library volunteers can tell you if your ancestors came directly to Mercer when they arrived in America. 1. Re: [PAMERCER] Mercer Co. Obit Lookups
    2. This is a wonderful project that the Mercer County Genealogical Society has taken on and I, for one, truly appreciate all the obituaries they have taken the time to upload to the computer that is available at the Sharon library. I've made three trips from Iowa to Mercer County solely for the purpose of researching my family history and each time I make sure I arrange my trip so that I can visit the Sharon Library when the Society members are there on Tuesdays. Those obituaries are the key that unlocks so many doors for us trying to find out more about our ancestors. Mercer County in particular had so many early day residents and there is so much history there to be preserved. Thanks for all you do and for working to preserve our all important family obituaries. I just wish I didn't live so far away or I'd love to give my time to help! Cindy Booth Maher Oxford, IA

    1. Years of the Sharon Herald
    2. Debbie Hoffman
    3. The Sharon Herald starts about 1878, with many gaps of missing microfilm. The years from about 1912 to 1949 are mostly all there. People living in the Greenville and Mercer/Grove City areas are sometimes not found in the Sharon Heralds in the early years. The society is trying to purchase copies of Greenville, Mercer, Grove City and other communities papers on microfilm. Debbie

    1. Mercer Co. Obit Lookups
    2. Debbie Hoffman
    3. The Mercer Co. Genealogical Society does obit lookups for a fee of $3 with a death date. The volunteers at the society have worked many years on abstracting the Sharon Herald. The Herald stopped putting the full obit online on their web site, most likely because of copyright laws. The Herald is supportive of the Gen. Soc. with obit requests because we are a volunteer society and none of our members are compensated for their time or all of the driving expenses these lookups incur. The society uses all of the money raised to buy materials for the society. With so many of the books, cemetery books, microfilm, etc., being constantly stolen from the library, we have to continually spend more money to replace these items. With the competition of others doing lookups, the society is losing much needed income. Last year the society was able to purchase a microfilm copier and many new books and research items. The obituary data bases which took years of work to read and type now had to be taken off the freely accessed computer which was used by all for their own family research and now can only be viewed on Tuesdays when volunteers can be there. We hope everyone will help support the society. The Mercer Co. Gen. Soc. mcgenealogy@hotmail.com Regina Donnelly Debbie Hoffman Loretta DeSantis Toni Sheehan Betty Shafer
