Mike -------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Q268) 17 Nov 1997 - David K. Steindel mailto:DSTEIND@aol.com Surnames: HALL, McCLAIN, NEARON, PHIPPS My great-great grandfather was John HALL. He was b. Jan 3, 1803 in Fairview Twp., Butler Co., PA, d. His first wife was Mary NEARON, second wife was Aleinda __?__, and third wife was Sarah __?__. John HALL was a tanner and lived most of his adult life in the city of Allegheny (Pittsburgh northside) and in Pittsburgh. John HALL's obituary ends with "Sharon please copy." The obituary was published in a Pittsburgh newspaper. The reference to "Sharon" leads me to believe that he had relatives in Mercer Co., PA since the Sharon newspaper was alerted to publish his obituary. 1. [PAMERCER-L] Census lookups
    2. To anyone who had ancestors in the Mercer County area in the year 1861, I have access right now to the 1861 census of Mercer county, townships A through New Vernon. I am expecting to receive the film of the rest of the townships next week. I am very willing to do lookups for anyone out there interested, but must stress that I can only do your lookup if you know what township your people lived in at the time. I don't have a whole lot of time available, at least not enough to go through the entire census looking for a name. So if you know your township, and can give me at least a first and last name (approximate age would be nice too if you know it...), I'll be happy to see what I can do for you. Just contact me personally at my email address below. 2. TEM
    3. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note from Mercer County Coordinator - I received the following message from a gentleman seeking info. on PA Civil War soldiers. If you have any info. that might help him, please contact him. The original message was all in caps and I changed it to normal caps, but you might want to respond to him in all caps. Thanks, Mike -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Librarian / Historian: Greetings! Please excuse caps—eyesight. I am a former historian with the National Park Service, now disabled and homebound from lon-term illness. Am a published author and book reviewer in Civil War history, but am having great difficulty researching since I’m shut-in. Cannot communicate vocally either, so this email or snailmail is "it" for me now. I am presently trying to finish a manuscript on the Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia, October 19, 1864. Am looking for unpublished or newspaper accounts of Pennsylvania soldiers who fought there. Have tried most of the main libraries and archives already; keep getting told to contact the local historical societies, etc. So I am. I hate to contact you by email, but my time for completion is running short. I am not lazy nor "cheap"—just the limitations of a nine-year disability. If you might have any letters, diaries, newspaper accounts by soldiers from any of the following regiments for the time period in question, I’d be deeply appreciative. For your quick reference, I’ll list the Penn units I am seeking below—then if you spot one in your catlogs, you have a ready list at-hand. Infantry: 47, 54, 61, 67, 87, 93, 98, 102, 138, 139 [ all = Battle of Cedar Creek, Oct. Cavalry: 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 16, 17, 18 [May-July,1864] Thank you kindly for your time and consideration! 1. Re: [PAMERCER-L] Mercer County Home
    2. Diana Burns
    3. Excerpt from "The History of Mercer County Pensylvania" Vol. 1 Mr. J. G. White, 1909: "The Mercer County Home is situated north of Mercer. The principal buildings were erected about 1882-83, ground being first broken in 1880. The original cost of the building was over a hundred thousand dollars. The farm has been owned and used by the county for these purposes for more than half a century, The first poor farm was bought in 1851, and was also in Cool Spring township. The site was ill adapted and the place was sold before buildings were completed. The present farm was bought of Thomas Pearson in May, 1852, and was made ready for its first resident poor in January, 1853." The Mercer County Home is still in operation as a nursing home under the name (at least for now) of the Mercer County Living Center. Having been operated by the county for all these years, it is in transition to private operation. I have no idea what records, if any, they have, but the address is: Mercer County Living Center 745 Greenville Rd. 1. [PAMERCER-L] Ramsey Genealogy
    2. My name is Rebecca Ramsey and I am searching for the ancestors and descendants of Isaac Ramsey and Barbara Keener. Isaac was born in 1817 and is probably the son of Daniel George Ramsey and Susannah Wise. I have his birth place listed as Lycoming County, PA but have not been able to verify this. Barbara Keener was born in 1822 in Taylor County, Kentucky. They were reportedly married August 9, 1838 in Mercer, Pennsylvania, but I'm having a difficult time finding their marriage record. I have found Barbara and Isaac in the following census records: 1840 - Springfield Township, Mercer County, PA 1850 - Mill Creek Township, Mercer Co., PA 1860 - Mill Creek Township, Mercer Co., PA. Isaac reportedly died on Oct. 26, 1866. I'm assuming he died in Mill Creek Township, but need some help in verifying this. I would also like to know where he is buried???? Isaac and Barbara had the following children: Daniel K. Ramsey (b. 1839), Isaac Jr. Ramsey (b. 1843), Susannah Ramsey (b. 1844), John Ramsey (b. 1846), Peter Ramsey (b. 1848), George Ramsey (b. 1851), Elizabeth Ramsey (b. 1854), William H. Ramsey (b. 1856), James A. Ramsey (b. 1858), my great grandfather Jacob F. Ramsey (b. 1860), Mary M. Ramsey (b. 1862), and Charles W. Ramsey (b. 1866). James Alexander Ramsey was 8 years old when his father, Isaac, died and I believe that his mother, Barbara Keener Ramsey, may have moved back to Taylor County, Kentucky shortly thereafter. I found James in the 1900 Taylor County, Kentucky Census with his wife, Sarah A. (Sanders) Ramsey and children. I know the information is out there - somewhere - I just need to know where to look for it. I'll gladly share information (and sources). Thanks for whatever help you can provide. 2. Nancy Becker
    3. David, The Mecer County Home still exists. In fact, a friend's grandmother, who turned 100 years old this year is a resident. It functions as a nursing home/extended care facility today. I'm not positive, but I think in the past, it was a facility that took both private and indigent patients. I was born in 1947 and to my knowledge it was never a sanitarium. Mercer had one of those too. I would have to contact some Mercer residents but I could probably get more information on it. If you don't get any information from the list, mail me direct and I will try to find out for you. ==== PAMERCER Mailing List ==== Any questions/problems regarding the Mercer County, Pennsylvania list, contact the listowner, Michael L.
