Richard Winder has completed the 1850 census for Greene Twp. and it is now online at the Mercer County web site. Salem Twp. is on deck. Richard has also provided some links (which are on the 1850 census main page) to the U.S. National Archives with information on renting and purchasing census microfilms. If anyone would like to work on census transcriptions for years besides 1850, don't hesitate to let me know. Oh yeah, Happy New Year everyone! Hello Mercer County Researchers. I am inquiring as to the William CRAWFORD family. In 1850 census in the Delaware Township he ( age 48,) is listed with Nancy (relationship unknown),age 55, Alexander R. age 21, and Mary A. age 22. I later learned Mary A. (HUNTER) was the wife of Alexander R. William died 1880 in Venango County after moving there to the French Creek area between 1860 and 1870. I believe Mary Ann HUNTER was the daughter of George and Martha HUNTER of Mercer Co. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Here are a couple of items Santa brought for the Mercer Co. stocking ... Richard Winder has completed the 1850 census for Mill Creek Twp. and it is now online. Greene Twp. is up next. Thanks Richard. Thanks to the wonders of scanning and OCR technology, I have put online a chapter on Mercer County history from the book "A Pioneer Outline of Northwestern Pennsylvania" by William James McKnight (published 1905). Included are an old map of Mercer Co. and an engraving of the town of Mercer in 1843. The paragraph near the end of the chapter regarding corporal punishment in the old schools is rather eye-opening. <g> Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone. As a relatively new subscriber to the listserv, I've really been enjoying the it and am quite impressed by how helpful you all seem to one another. Since I work at the Library of Congress, which has a very good genealogical reference collection (including lots of family histories that are not readily available elsewhere), I'd be glad to check any individual volumes that look like they might be of interest to others doing family research. All I ask is that you cite specific works (and be patient if I can't respond immediately.) For those of you with Internet access, you can browse the Library's catalogs at http://lcweb2.loc.gov/resdev/ess/ You can email me at tfel@loc.gov Tom Felt Researching: BROWN, O'DAY, O'GRADY, STANTON, GROGAN, DAVIS, NICHOLS, BYERS, MCCRACKEN ==== PAMERCER Mailing List ==== Any questions/problems regarding the Mercer County, Pennsylvania list, contact the listowner, Michael L. Hello all, I recently made an offer to do lookups on the "1861" census of Mercer county, it should have read 1860 instead. I keep getting our census years mixed up with those of Great Britain, they did theirs in the actual first year of each decade. Sorry if this has caused any confusion to anyone!
