Walt, You will find the Union Home Cemetery in Wolf Creek Twp., which is just south of Worth Twp. The cemetery sits just east of Rt. 173 on Lr. 43027 ( I don't know the name of the road). And is about 1 mile west of Centertown, which is really a crossroads. The Mercer Co. Gen. Society would have all the tombstones recorded in their inscriptions books. I am certain that I will offend a lot of people, and if you have a comment send it to me privately, however -- One of the basic tenants of genealogical research is to have good maps, atlases, etc. with good indices of the areas - states, countries, etc. - that you are researching. (Some maps, atlases are good, some are not.) It certainly a lot easier, and less expensive, to ask a list for the general location of a geographical location or population place (state, county, city). But it is usually faster to look it up yourself, provided that it is a current location. (Historical locations are another matter and certainly have a place in the lists). Looking it up yourself reduces the volume of e-mail that most of us have to look at before pushing the delete key, and it increased your knowledge of geography since you have to actually look at a map. <grin> [:-), etc. -- Tom Lusk -- Tallahassee FL [:- ) May the Wind always be at your back! thomase@nettally.com Researching: LUSK, ELLIOTT, PALMER, PERRY, STUART, WITHERSPOON: Europe > western PA : CLELAND: Lawrence/Mercer Co. Jim Wise has submitted a photo of workers at the No. 5 Mine, near Grove City, PA. The picture probably dates back to before 1920. You can see it on the Miscellaneous Page at the Mercer County web site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~pamercer/misc.htm If you can identify anyone in the picture, please contact Jim. Hi Everyone, I hope someone is out there who can point me in the right direction for this surname. Here's what I have: Richard Maddocks-Mattocks,(etc)b. March 1756, his Rev War Pension papers sort of say in VA. A comma would make all the difference. His brothers Peter b. 1760 and Joseph b. 1765 in Sussex Co., NJ along with a sister living in Sussex Co. during the Rev. War tend to lead me to Sussex Co. NJ for his place of birth also. His parents names were Daniel and Prudence (unknown), this is from the Bible of Joseph Mattocks. The 1781 Tax List for Penns Township, Northumberland Co. shows Richard there with 150 acres. The 1790 Census shows them still in Northumberland Co. About 1797 they moved to Fallowfield Township, Crawford Co. and from there to Pymatuning Township, Mercer Co. where he died 30 May 1837. Richard's wife was Mary, possible maiden name Kline. Children I know of are Jacob, Sarah and Margaret. Margaret being my 3rd g-grandmother, she married Jacob Mattocks who died during the War of 1812, his father was also Jacob and possibly a brother or cousin of Richard. I'm doubtful of a Quaker connection but since there were Quakers with this surname in Sussex Co. I have included this mail list. Any information on these families would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Joyce Westmyer robertw1@ix.netcom.com
I also am researching McQuistons, from Mercer Co. and Crawford Co., all descendants of Andrew McQuiston (b.1764 in Ireland)(m. Elizabeth McClurkins) who came to So. Carolina in 1794 and then to Western Pennsylvania sometime before 1820. I am descended from Andrew's son, John. Greetings! I'm a beginning browser but have been working on the McQuiston genealogy for several years. I know my McQuiston ancestors lived in Jefferson County, but since there are so many McQ's in Venango county I'm wondering about some connections. To that end I would like to be in touch with someone who could inform me about the McQuiston Reunion held every July 4 in Sandy Creek. (My husband grew up in Jamestown and thus knows the area, and he tells me Sandy Creek, at least as he remembers it, is small and probably anyMcQuiston would know something about the get-together. I posted my McQuiston name on your surname index this evening, also. Thanking you in advance for any help you can give. Marcy Davis

Hello.... I am very new to this, but hoping that everyone will be patient. I am currently researching the WILCOX branch of my family. Following is the connection that I am able to verify as located in or near Mercer County, PA. (I am fast learning that there is a BIG difference between information that I can verify and guesswork!) My G-Grandfather, JOHN C WILCOX was born 11 June 1892 in Wilmington, New York, and died 26 May 1956 in Crown Point, New York. He married DAISY LEWIS, originally of Drayton Market, England. John and Daisy moved from New York to Farrell, Mercer County, PA along with John's sister, PEARL WILCOX and her husband HENRY SUMNER. John C Wilcox and Daisy (Lewis) Wilcox had six children: Clifford, Carlton, Donald, Frank, Frances, and Dorothy. Frances and Frank were twins. Clifford Wilcox married Mary (?); Donald Wilcox married Rita Riggs; Carl married Ann (?); Dorothy married Robert Smith; Frank married Eva Smith (my grandparents) and Frances died in infancy. Of the union between Pearl Wilcox and Henry Sumner, there were Dorothy, Fanny, Walter, and Mary. Mary is the mother of Robert Price, a mayor of Sharon, Mercer County, PA. If any of this sounds familiar to anyone, or if anyone knows anything of this particular line of Wilcox's, I'd love to hear from you. I would be grateful for any information, and willing to share what I already have. So far, I have gathered over 1000 names, but I have many significants gaps that I want to fill. Thanks so much! Births - 1893 through 1905 Deaths - 1893 through 1905 Marriages - 1885 through present I would expect the other things you mentioned would go back to the formation of the county in 1800. Before that there may be some records in Allegheny Co. back to its formation in 1787. This is my guessing but I am pretty sure on the births, deaths and marriages. Does anyone have the exact years that the Mercer Co. courthouse has records for births, marriages, deaths, wills, probate, land, etc.? I often get questions about this and I'm not sure about the exact years. I would like to add this info. to the web site. I know the state office has the birth and death records since 1906. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike _______________________________________________________ Mercer County, Pennsylvania USGenWeb county coordinator
