    1. [PAMERCER-L] Mahans in Mercer Co,
    2. Genevieve Kile
    3. Can someone tell me what year Mercer Co was formed and from what counties. My Shannon Co.. Mahans came from Mercer Co according to one of original brothers obit. James Mahan Jr's obit stated he was born in Mercer Co Pa Aug 10, 1811. He had one older bro William born in Pa in 1810. Parents believed to be James(SR) and Jane Mahan but the census is not consistent with this, unless they were living with one of their sets of parents. Have not found a marriage record for them either. James Sr father believed to be William. Legend states William Mahan came thru Shannon Co in 1779 and 1799 (Believe it was 1799) with a hunting party of Delaware Indians then returned home and persuaded his family to come back to MO with him. After the above children were born there was Wallace b. Ohio 1816, John b. Ohio 1817 Grace and Jane born 1822 and 1823 Ind and Samuel born 1826 Ind. They were in Mo in 1830 named spelled Mchan. 2 more children born after 1830 and Jane listed separately in 1840. Have joined Mercer Co Gen Society in the past and was given info re: William Mahan being there but need to find marriage and census for James and Jane. thanks in advance gkile@semo.net

    3. Dear Dee, The best day to go to Mercer is on a Tuesday. The Mercer County Genealogical Society is at the Shenango Valley Community Library in Sharon every Tuesday. Library opens at 10a.m. There are some useful tools there, such as a multi-volume cemetery inscription set, census records, etc. The county court house is in Mercer, a short drive from Sharon; it is open M-F. The Mercer County Historical Society is across the street from the court house. It too is open M-F. They are very helpful and knowledgable. I was surprised at what I found there. If you decide to begin in Mercer instead of Sharon, go to the Society first. It could save you some time. The court house has lots of info on mariages, deaths, births, taxes, etc. Problem is that there isn't much for the earlier part of last century and you had a population that didn't always register births, marriages and the like. Happy hunting. . . Jeffrey Alan Franks Great Great Great Great Grandson of Samuel and Nancy KOONCE of Clarksville DEE353 wrote: > Want to come down to Mercer Pa to do some "hands-on" research.
