    1. [PAMERCER-L] Coal Mines
    2. Marley Elizabeth Greiner
    3. First, I want to thank everyone who responded recently to my request about the availability of older vital statistics in PA. As I figured, I'm sort of out of luck. Now I have another question. I've been learned that my great great grandfather MICHAEL BRONDER and my great grandfather of the same name were coal miners. I know they worked in mines somewhere in Allegheny County, but there is also the possibility that for awhile at least one of them worked as a miner in Mercer County, probably in the Greenville area. Does anybody know about the coal industry in Mercer County, and if there are any websites regarding mines in PA. ALso, would the UMW have records (but I believe the Bronders pre-dated the union.) Thanks. Marley Greiner Researching: BRONDER, FLECKENSTEIN, LOEW (Pennsuylvania) Granecome, Shearstone, Lawrance, Somerset County, Eng.

Also two men signed that they were friends of Joseph Vaughn and served with him in the 103rd PA Infantry. They were REYNOLDS LAUGHLIN and PETER M DUNKLE. I would also appreciate hearing from connections of them. Thank you. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated....Ellie ellie@pacific.net

    1. [PAMERCER-L] Margaret Jane MCWHIRTER
    2. Mary Lois Grantham
    3. My great-aunt, Margaret Jane McWhirter b.1850 in Mercer Co., PA, was the daughter of John MCWHIRTER b.15 Nov 1809 in Derry Co., Ireland, and Margaret CLARK b. C1817 in Harlens, Lawrence Co., PA. Her mother died seven days after childbirth. She is listed in the 1880 census for W. Lackawannock Twp., Mercer Co. with her father. Then there are no records until the 1910 census for Vincennes, Knox Co. Indiana. The 1888 History of Mercer Co. mentions that she was living in Illinois. I remember going to Vincennes to visit her and a much younger stepbrother, John, when I was a child. I wish I had asked about her while my parents were alive. Where was she all that time? being raised by relatives? or what? If anyone has any knowledge of her or has a census index for Illinois and/or Indiana for any of the years between I would appreciate a look-up. Thanks!!
