Thanks to Mary Lois Grantham. The correct address for the Carnegie website is http://www.clpgh.org/ I was just viewing this site again and I am ready to go back to the Burgh - but not today too much snow. Brent Morgan
Hello Mercer List: I have been following the list on this subject. I believe Heather moved to Pittsburgh and wanted to know the location for the Carnegie. It is at 4400 Forbes Avenue in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. If you can get to Oakland you can easily find it. Amy questioned whether or not the Carnegie had ever been renovated and yes it has. When you go to the Carnegie you want to go to the Pennsylvania Department. All the history and genealogy are in that location. Marilyn Holt who is in charge of the department is also president of the Western PA Gen Society. Everyone there is very helpful. The Carnegie website is http://www,clpgh.org/ Brent Morgan Cleveland, Ohio
Amy, I was interested in your information about the Carnegie Library of Pgh. I am originally from Mercer co. and now live in Pittsburgh. I also have relatives that may be in that book. I would be willing to look some things up for you if you could tell me where the library is located. I am still new to the area. Thanks, Heather Reash
Linesville is not in Armstrong County. Linesville, PA is in Crawford County along the Pymatuning River and Reseviour. Linesville is known as the place where the ducks walk on top of the fish at the spillway.. AmyHutton@aol.com wrote: > Denise, my father-in-law was born in Linesville, but it isn't in Mercer > County. Denise, my father-in-law was born in Linesville, but it isn't in Mercer County. It's in Armstrong County, but I guess you knew that. It's a teensy little place by the river just before you get into Freeport. Blink and you miss it. SOMEWHERE on the web I have seen a site that deals with orphan schools from the civil war era in PA. I grew up in Pittsburgh, (now FL) and I do know that at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh in the Genealogy Room, or the Pennsylvania Room there is a crumbling fat old book that they keep in one of their non-airconditioned rooms that describes every PA orphan school and has photos and lots of stuff. I used to take it out and look at it for the heck of it. NOW that I can't access it, I have found an ancestor who grew up in one! I surely hope that the conditions in which this great library is keeping such marvelous records in has improved in the past 13 years! But I doubt it. The Western PA Historical Society may also have a copy. AmyHutton
I would like to know more about the Soldiers Orphan School at Mercer, PA. My great-great-grandfather, John J. Rea, attended the school for several years after the death of his father, who fought in the Civil War. John J. Rea was born in 1868 in Linesville, PA and died 1895 in Linesville, PA. How do I get records from this school and where is it or where was it. I would appreciate any information about the school. Thanks, Denise dbcbhall@velocity.net
Harry, I have a little info on the elder ELDER's at: http://www.erols.com/ed.mcclelland/elder.htm Ed.McClelland@erols.com Alexandria, Virginia
Am looking for any information on Leon Nadrew REEFER, born July 23, 1868 in Meadville. His father Morris REEFER, his mother Jeannette Tichner or his sister Mae. Barbara Findley
Harry, I have one tie-in to the names you posted. I have a Mary Jane Rodgers who married William Presley Elder. They were married 28 April 1874 in Wilmington TWP, Lawrence, Pennsylvania. I have burials for them in the Mt. Hope Cemetery of New Vernon TWP, Mercer. He remarried after her death (to Maria A. Lyons). I have their newspaper marriage announcement from the Lawrence Journal. According to his obit, he had a brother named Joseph and 3 sisters named Elizabeth Watson, Martha Wareham and Austa First. He left 2 sons, Harry and Clarence and a daughter, Nannie. I have more details on the family, but I don't go back any farther on the Elder line, as I was researching the Rodgers side. Does this fit in anywhere for you? Lucy
In response to Stephen Fisher, we learned from the "Cox Collection" at the LDS Family History Center in Tucson, AZ that the following were early newspapers of Greenville, PA and vicinity: 1. West Greenville Gazette (Note: The "West" was eventually dropped from the name because it was superfluous.) 2. Visitor 3. Weekly Express 4. Independent Press 5. West Greenville Times 6. Rural Argus 7. Shenango Valley Times 8. Union Democrat 9. Greenville Progress 10. Shenango Valley Times 11. Independent Not sure if any of these overlapped the area in which you are interested, but you might check the "Cox Collection" again to zero in on it.
Hi! I am researching the names of McMahon and McNerney for my wonderful Mother-in-Law in Mercer County, Pa. Someone wrote recently regarding the McCREARY surname. Some information on this family can be found on my web site at http://www.ntsource.com/~autx/References/mcdowhist.htm. Use your browsers word search function to search for the word McCREARY in the text of the page. It's a long page. The home page for the site is http://www.ntsource.com/~autx/ if you have problems. Hope this helps. Stephen.
Mary KELLS FISHER died ca. 1837, presumeably near Eastbrook Mercer/Lawrence Co., PA. Her husband Thomas FISHER remarried ca. 1838 to Elizabeth BROWN. Can anyone tell me what local newspapers would have been published at this time and if there is a local source (library or other) that might have copies? Thanks. Stephen Fisher.
I too would like to know what Mercer Co. Newspapers were published - especially in 1880. I am trying to locate an obituary for Mary Moore (or Moon) Mills, who died then. She was Presbyterian, and is buried in Coolspring Cemetery. > Hey is there a Mercer Co. Death Index for Mercer Co. in 1903? Perhaps an > Obituary for Sara Ellen Pringle Maskrey? Ireland DENNIS/WILLIAMS - in PA (Crawford Co and Bucks Co) and New Jersey BRENNER/GLASS/HESSE/MUELLER - in Louisville, KY and Germany
I am looking for information on the family of John Thomas YOUNG. John Thomas married Nancy Jane ALLISON about 1827. They had nine known children: Allison, James, Jerusha, Thomas Jefferson, Charles Morgan, John Scott, Charity, Julius and Winston Gaius. In the spring of 1854 the family moved to Jo Daviess County, Illinois. John Thomas is believed to be the son of Matthew YOUNG and Elizabeth BAIL (Baile). They probably moved to Mercer County from Washington and Allegheny counties. The 1850 census of Mercer County shows a James YOUNG. This might be a brother of John Thomas and another son of Matthew. Matthew and Elizabeth both died in Mercer county, Matthew about 1844. Any help on this line would be greatly appreciated. janet young berkson
Hey is there a Mercer Co. Death Index for Mercer Co. in 1903? Perhaps an Obituary for Sara Ellen Pringle Maskrey? What News papers were available in Mercer Co. for 1900 -1903?
Looking for ancestors that may have paused in Mercer Co. PA. on their way to Ohio in the early 1800's. Anyone have any connections with the surnames PATTON or LAUGHLIN? Thanks for checking! Dee
I have posted the following surnames before: Sharp, Munnell, Rice/Reis, Elder, Neely, Jones, Withington. Any ties will be appreciated. Harry
