Came home from work today and checked and had twice as many e-mails as usual due to the activity! My family (various branches) came to the Shenango Valley, Mercer County between 1900 and 1935. I have lived here for nearly 50 years. Some of the names sound familiar because I went to school with the names (like Shingledecker)(Hickory High in Hermitage PA). I keep on the list because I have lived here all my life and figure I might run into a name I can help with. I work at the Farrell Schools in Farrell. I have access to yearbooks there, but they don't start until 1920. But I will do lookups from them. In the spring I usually visit a few of the local cemeteries: Haywood Cemetery in West Middlesex, Oakwood in Sharon, and Hillcrest in Hermitage. Found some notes my uncle-in-law wrote in the 60s. Reference was made to the fact in the War of 1812 three men from Mercer Co. were courtmartialed and shot in Erie, PA. Names Byrd, Pole & Rankin. They were caught in Mercer Co. Supposedly a song was written about this. Does anyone know anything about this? (Can you sing the song?) Joanne Long Lloyd Researching Names (mostly from SW PA, OH & WV) Crawford, Simpson, Archer, Givens, Hupp, Blum, Long, Finkbeiner, Mackey, Lantz.
I guess I should post some of my surnames as long as this list is in movement again. HILANDS/HOYLANDS/HIGHLANDS CAMPBELL (3 LINES) MOSSMAN JONES McKINNEY REZNOR WHITE BYERS MITCHELTREE SMEAL WILLIAMS & MORE Bob McKeon
Might as well join in.... I am searching for ROBERTS in Mercer County. Thomas Roberts and Sarah Whitehouse came to Pennsylvania from Wales some time after 1846 and before 1850 and settled in Mercer County (we believe in Sharon, or vacinity). We know of two children: Sarah b. 1846 in England (Wales?) and Harry, born in Sharon in 1850. SARAH ROBERTS (b. 1846 Manchester?, England, d. 1930, Pittsburgh, PA) married Samuel Young. She had at least one child, a dughter named Ella. HARRY ROBERTS (b. 1-1-1850 in Sharon, Mercer County, PA; d. 3-20-1935 in Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County) and FRANCES ELIZABETH (DICKSON) ROBERTS (b. 1856 in New Metamoras, Washington County, OH; d. 2-16-1927 in Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County) of Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County PA. Fanny's parents were ALEXANDER DICKSON [son of CHRISTOPHER DICKSON (from Ireland) and FRANCES LEWIS (from Tyler County, (now West) Virginia)] and ELIZABETH ANN SHAW. Children of Harry and Fanny were: SAMUEL G. ROBERTS who wrote western novels/novellas under the pen name Sam Galbreath. Sam was said to have left Pennsylvania to join the circus as a young man. Was working as a ranch hand in the west. Lived in Arizona where he died in late 1950's or early 60's. He was married, but not much else is known at this time. GEORGE ROBERTS (B. 1-26-1874 in Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County; d. 6-12-1957 in Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County) married to Mary Buzzard (b. 2-5-1877 in Swissvale (?) Allegheny County; d. 1-29-1966 in Wilmerding, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania) Children: Margaret (b. April 07, 1896, Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania; d. March 03, 1981, Zephyrhills, Pasco County, Florida), Fanny, Anna and Albert. HARRY R. ROBERTS (b. 1-10-1876 in Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County; d. unk, but buried in Arlington National Cemetery) married 6-18-1902 to Ann Drummond (b. 3-18-1881 in Glasgow, Scotland, d. UKN.) Harry served in the Spanish American War. They had at least one child, a son named Donald. EDWARD THOMAS ROBERTS (b. 12-14-1879 in Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County, d. 1-24-1960, Swissvale, Allegheny County, PA) married June 12, 1901 in St. Stephens Rectory, Wilkinsburg, PA JEAN HALL DRUMMOND (b. 1-24-1879 in Glasgow Scotland, d. 7-30-1953 Swissvale, Allegheny County, PA) daughter of William Drummond and Jean Hall. Edward worked for Union Switch & Signal in Swissvale, lost hand in factory accident. Later became a Swissvale Police Officer. Children: Frances Jean, Naomi, Edward, Howard, Alexander, Ruth, Margaret Helen and John (Jack). MARGARET K. ROBERTS (b. 12-14-1879 in Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County, d. UNK, Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County, PA) married to John Irwin Pratt who died in 1927, then remarried (in 1935) to Maurice L. Thompson, Esq. WILLIAM ROBERTS (b. 1-1884, d. 3-16-1884 died at 3 mos. of age). ELMER ALEXANDER ROBERTS (born 12-14-1883 in Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County, PA, d. 2-24-1957 in Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania) married Mercedes Wendell. One child: Thomas Edward ROBERT FRANCIS ROBERTS (b. 1889 in Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County, PA, d. Unk.) married to Emma Junker. Although all of the children were born in Allegheny County, the family spent some time in Mercer County. It is believed that Harry, a bricklayer, was involved in the construction of steel mills in Sharon, although it is possible that it was his father Thomas, not Harry, who was involved. If you are descended from Thomas and Sarah Roberts or their children Harry or Sarah (or others???), or have any information on their children, siblings or their ancestors, please contact Ray Roberts at rroberts@p-b-llp.com I will be happy to share all that I have, including scanned photographs, with any other Roberts descendants. Thanks for your time Ray Roberts Pittsburgh, PA
Hi Mercer County Rooters, Seems like someone stirred the pot but glad everyone is posting their names and thoughts. I am researching WINGER/WINGARD/and NELLIS surnames from Mercer County. I also have a couple of questions that maybe someone could help me with. I have been told that my ggg grandmother Jane WINGARD was buried in Reichard Cemetery who died 1905 in Sharon, PA. She is not listed on the cemetery listing that the Historical Society did. Does anyone know who would have the original cemetery records? I know from past experience that if there was no headstone that they may indeed be buried there but not listed on the inscription list. Secondly, what other cemeteries would be around the Sharon, PA area. Her obit say she died at the home of her daughter in Sharon, PA. Also, some of my WINGER/WINGARD lines married UBER's and MCDONALD's from Mercer. Hope to keep hearing from everyone. Beverly Pfeil Paquet Tucson AZ
I have a Harriet Dean born 11/20/1914. Jane
Connie, I have a Margaret Crawford married 1806 to William Stevenson and an Onora Crawford married Richard Stevenson 1738. Also noted you are looking for STAMM family. I have STAUM or STAMM family also. Jane
So glad to meet all the Mercer County folks. I spend alot of my time traveling around this County searching for Bruner family that settled in New Lebanon, Mill Creek Township. John, I have a portion of the 1888 History of Mercer County written about my great grandfather, Daniel Bruner but am wondering if there is mention of Henry Opitz in that book. Recently received several pictures taken in mid to late 1800's of the family in New Lebanon, wonderful old portraits, but not identified. Would love to hear from anyone researching subject names. Thanks from sunny Arizona, Jane
Since the pot got stirred, I'll add my 2 cents worth. I'm looking for any DARBYs in Mercer County during any time frame. My family came here in 1869 as coalminers and liked it so well we're still here. Also, I'm sure Michael Hebert the listowner can give us a total of the subscribers. I have two lists and regularly post the numbers so everyone has an idea of how many folks they may be reaching. Other names of interest are Jamieson, Harry, Holsapple, Brest, Leyde, Likens Tom Darby
Does anyone know if there is a death index for the state of Pennsylvania around 1928, 29, or 1930? Would love a lookup for a Steve ELOVICH who is my Grandfather. On his tombstone it states that he died in 1930. I have not been able to find the county as yet. He lived in Sharon or Farrell, Pa. He did not die in Mercer County. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Lola
Amazing how stuff comes out of the woodwork!! I am trying to find a LIVING relative of my Wilsons of Mercer County. My grand uncle Everett Wilson lived in East Lackawnock Twsp. He lived on the Mercer Pulaski Road. There was a notoreous murder on the farm that took the life of Everetts wife and mother, as well as a hired hand. This all took place about 1943. Yes, thats the family! This farm was purchased in1804 by John Wilson. He and his wife Grace Miller came from Ireland via Westmoreland County.John (b.1765)and Grace had seven children that we believe came to live in Mercer County. Grace,James,John(Jr),William,Nellie,Charles, and Margaret. We only know the history of James, where are the rest of them? James was born Aug. 11,1790 in Ireland and came to America with his parents. On March 8,1820,James maried Ester Harris of Mahoning County,Ohio. They had six children. William H.,Margaret C.,Isaac Newton,C.,Almon B.,and James L. Almon moved to Ohio and died there, Have no idea what his wifes name was or where children are. Isaac Newton is accounted for, but all his sons are dead with no children bearing the Wilson surname surviveing.Where are James,Phoebe,Margaret, and William?? The 1850 census has a Wilson family in the next house to Almon and James L. I don't know if they are part of the clan. I need help in connecting these two housholds. The head of households date of birth was not listed on the census as it was transcribed.Does anyone have an actual copy? Was there two houses on the same farm in 1850? James may have built a new house, because he married the next year. Why didn't Everett list any of the names, in the second house, in the family history that he wrote?Maybe a family fued? Lots of help needed here. I remember my granduncle Everett mentioning names like"MacDonald and Hogue" I wish I could remember what he said,They were probably hunting and fishing buddys. I get reminded of the names when they appear on the net. Anyone with Wilson family recollections, PLEASE pass 'em on to me. Thanks, David Wilson Waddell,Sr. ( Dave) dwad1939@aol.com
I'm in Connecticut, too, but grew up in Pittsburgh. My Mercer County surnames include MONTGOMERY, BOSTON, ALBERT, CRILL, ALBIN, HOSACK, MOON, SMITH, SLEMMONS, BARNES (two separate BARNES lines), CALDOO, KUHN, and BOLE. I'm enjoying all the surname exchanges today! Linda Champanier RHilands@aol.com wrote: > I.m Connecticut. Not a very active list. Hi, Glad to see activity on this list. I'm searching for ANY information on the DeCamp/D'Camp/DeCompt surname. George DeCamp etc. moved to Mercer Co from Westmoreland Co in the late l700's or early l800's, married and had several children. He was the son of John DeCamp etc. and Susannah, the step-son of Nehemiah Stokely who was Susannah's 2nd husband. This is a brick wall that I have not been able to break thru- so any help would be gratefully appreciated. Also the surname Sample, George's sister was also named Susannah (just to confuse everyone) and she married a David Sample-5th gr grandfather in l798. They disappeared from Westmoreland Co....maybe she/they followed her brother George to Mercer??? we don't know. She named one of her sons Steele Sample b. l800 -4th gr grandfather, and he(Steele) named one of his sons George D'Camp Sample and he is my 3rd gr grandfather buried in Washington Co. Thanks for any info, Pat-Norfolk, VA John DeCamp and Susannah #1 are my 6th great grandparents and would love to find out more about them and
I sent out a query regarding some ancestors living in West Salem Township several months ago, but never received a reply. As long as this list seems to have returned from the graveyard (pun intended) I thought I'd try again. I am primarily concerned about anyone with the last name of BOWMAN. We know that there was a John Bowman who lived somewhere in Pennsylvannia. He had a son, either David or Davis Bowman who was born on September 11, 1778 and lived in West Salem Township in Mercer County, although it is not certain that he was born there. David BOWMAN married Anna CLARKE on December 31, 1801. Anna Clarke is something of a mystery; my grandfather (John Clarke BOWMAN IV) who compiled the genealogy in the 1970's claimed that she was the daughter of George Rogers Clark, despite the different spelling of last names. My father and I believe this is a fiction of my grandfather's and is probably not true. Anna and David (or Davis) had twins, John Clarke BOWMAN II and James BOWMAN, who married Martha ANDREWS. John and James were born on December 25, 1802. John Clarke BOWMAN II lived in Sharon, Shenago and West Salem Township as he was growing up, and then moved to Warren in Trumbull County, Ohio, somehwere between 1832 and 1835. He eventually moved to Iowa and died on December 1, 1887 in Petaluma, CA. An information that anyone can locate would be much appreciated. My father and I are trying to find out from which country the BOWMANs came, and exactly who the first BOWMAN was who arrived in American from our line. Sincerely, William Clarke "Bill" Bowman

John, Activity already, yet. The family I am interested in is William McCutcheon (not my line) m Emma Evans Kerr, in Mercer, PA., 21 Apr 1891 by the Rev John V Stockton. That is the total information. Descendants have a family rumor that he or his father came from Canada. TIA Mac PS: I hope that when you shake your tree you get more than nuts.
