    3. Becky and all, I'm President of the Hermitage Historical Society (formerly Hickory Twp.). Mercer County was formed in 1800 having been taken from Crawford County on the north and Allegheny County on the south. It is made of Revolutionary Land Grants and donation lands. I haven't the info on the founding fathers but the county historical under the direction of William Philson would. They have a web page located http://www.pathway.net/mchs The county is planning a big celebration for the year 2000 to celebrate their 200the anniversary. It would be a great time for anyone with an interest in Mercer County to visit. Hope this helps. 2. Beverly Liston
    3. This will be rather lengthy concerning the Mercer County Genealogy Society, however, since the list is quite active at this time I decided it would be a good time to put it out there. The Mercer County Genealogy Society is a non profit organization staffed by volunteers. We are located in the Shenango Valley Community Library, 11 North Sharpsville Avenue, Sharon, Mercer County, PA. Volunteers are at the library on Tuesdays from 10:00 am until around 4:00 pm. During those hours all records belonging to the society are available for research and any help that we can give a person in locating records in our 'Genealogy Library'. Some of our resources are available at all times that the library is open. We have other resources that are only available when a volunteer member is present. If you can not be there on Tuesday, other times can be arranged by appointment. Usually on short notice. The regular library staff has a list of the telephone numbers to call. Dues in the Society are $l0.00 per year. Dues include a one time search of the records for your surname (copying of pages is extra). The courthouse as we understand it is not doing research at this time. Microfilm of all Sharon Papers (mostly are complete - there are a couple of periods in the early papers that are missing). Abstractions of the births and marriages in the early newspapers (1876-1920) are nearly 100% completed. Deaths have been abstracted from the newspapers (1876-1920) and 1952 to the present. These are all being computerized at this time. It is an ongoing project being done by the volunteers. Years between 1920 and 1952 are being worked on by volunteers. An obituary can be found, if it was published in the Sharon Papers, copies and sent to you for a nominal fee. Normal research rates are $7.50 per hour for research plus copying fee. 1. [PAMERCER-L] GOUGH/GOFF
    2. Pamela E. Hartman
    3. Researching my GOUGH family-it was spelled GOFF in the 1860 and 1870 census records for Mercer. James GOUGH emmigrated from Monaghan, IRE in 1850 to NY and then to Mercer. He married Mary WHEELER(dau of Cyrus) in 1853. Their children were Margaret, James, John, Isaac, William, Samuel, (Phillip and Martha-b and d in MERCER) and Mary. It is family hearsay that a sister came at the same time from IRE. I think his father, John arrived after 1858 and before 1860 with a second wife and other siblings-Robert, Sarah, Samuel. Possibly John and also Margaret are other siblings. Other related Mercer lines are BUCKLEY, WHEELER, STEIN, THOMPSON.....They moved to Fillmore Co., MN in 1876 and then to Miner Co., SD in 1882. Any help, lookups or info would be greatly appreciated and gladly reciprocated-Pamela, Oshkosh WI

    2. Ed Lloyd & Family
    3. Thanks, I still get confused what is Sharon and what is Hermitage. When areas of Hickory Twp were annexed by the various boroughs and cities many years ago it sure made for some confusing boundaries. Patagonia still confuses me. One of my favorite areas of Hickory (Hermitage) is Dog Town near Wheatland. I don't know how it got its name, but my husband's family (Lloyds of Wheatland) always called it this. JLL

    1. [PAMERCER-L] KECK from Greenville and GILLIS
    2. My Mercer County Connection is: Mary Alice KECK 1860-1949, born Greenville, Mercer County to Edward KECK and Susan MEYER (alternate spellings a possibility). Mary Alice KECK GILLIS STANHOPE buried Shiawassee Co, MI. Wakeman GILLIS was mistaken as "James" by some descendants. Could Wakeman be German Wegmann (or variation) anglicized?
