Linda, I saw your message the other day about family "Boyer". Have you seen the book - AMERICAN BOYERS by Rev. Charles C. Boyer, PhD - Revised by Melville James Boyer, MA This a large book with many lines of the Boyer/various spellings family lineage. GEORGE MICHAEL BYERS (b. 1828 - son/Michael Boyers 1793) m. MARY GRANT (b. 1837 - daug. of Jonathan Grant & Mary Timbrel) is listed in this book. Jonathan & Sarah Grant are my gr-grandparents. Perhaps this book can be of help to you if you haven't seen. Let me tell y'all. I had the pleasure of meeting Beverly and using the MCGS resources last October when I made the trek up from Florida. I was amazed at the wonderful collection as well as the dedication and hard work of the volunteers. They will help you all they can and with a smile! Because of Beverly and the MCGS, I was able to solve many family mysteries and astound my relatives :) Many thanks to Beverly. If you ever get the chance to visit the Mercer County Genealogical Society, GO! David Stoner dgstoner@hotmail.com ---------------------------------------------------- Beverly Liston wrote: This will be rather lengthy concerning the Mercer County Genealogy Society, however, since the list is quite active at this time I decided it would be a good time to put it out there. The Mercer County Genealogy Society is a non profit organization staffed by volunteers. We are located in the Shenango Valley Community Library, 11 North Sharpsville Avenue, Sharon, Mercer County, PA. Volunteers are at the library on Tuesdays from 10:00am until around 4:00pm. During those hours all records belonging to the society are available for research and any help that we can give a person in locating records in our 'Genealogy Library'. Some of our resources are available at all times that the library is open. We have other resources that are only available when a volunteer member is present. If you can not be there on Tuesday, other times can be arranged by appointment. Usually on short notice. The regular library staff has a list of the telephone numbers to call. Dues in the Society are $l0.00 per year. Dues include a one time search of the records for your surname (copying of pages is extra). A newsletter is published 8 times a year. - February, March, April, May, September, October, November and December. There are six meetings a year at the library - March, April, May, September, October and November - the third Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m. A picnic is held in July at Buhl Farm. The Genealogy holdings consist of Cemetery Books for not only Mercer County, PA (which were done by volunteers from the society in 1970's and includes all the locatable cemeteries in Mercer County, PA.) but other local counties; Histories from many Counties in Pennsylvania (many not indexed); family histories which have been donated to the society; Ancestor Charts that have been sent to the society; city directories (both books and on microfiche); Mercer County Courthouse records of Marriages (1885-1946); Deaths recorded (1893-1905; Births recorded (1893-1905) and Delayed Birth Certificates. The courthouse as we understand it is not doing research at this time. >> Microfilm of all Sharon Papers (mostly are complete - there are a couple of periods in the early papers that are missing). Abstractions of the births and marriages in the early newspapers (1876-1920) are nearly 100% completed. Deaths have been abstracted from the newspapers (1876-1920) and 1952 to the present. These are all being computerized at this time. It is an ongoing project being done by the volunteers. Years between 1920 and 1952 are being worked on by volunteers. >> An obituary can be found, if it was published in the Sharon Papers, copies and sent to you for a nominal fee. Normal research rates are $7.50 per hour for research plus copying fee. >> We have microfilm or microfiche of the following: Mercer County, PA Census Records; some Church Records of Mercer County; Some Funeral Home Records; Miscellaneous Trumbull County, Ohio Census Records; Various other County Census records; Mercer County Poor Home Records; a few rolls of Ship Passenger Lists from New York. >> We will soon have our own web site and all the holdings of the society will be listed there. >> Officers are Beverly Liston, President - bliston@infonline.net Jane Rodgers, Vice President - bjr@infonline.net Toni Sheehan, Secretary Linda Dudzenski, Treasurer Loretta DeSantis, Librarian lorgen@infonline.net Paul Corbett, Past President Peggy Ruggles, Newsletter Editor >> A query can be advertised in our newsletter for $2.00 per surname for non members. >> For more information you can write to either of the above e-mail addresses. >> Beverly Liston, Hermitage, PA. Hi all, I've been a subscriber for quite some time, but never posted to the list before because my link to Mercer County is very cloudy. Please take the time to read the biographical sketch below that my gggrandfather wrote in 1894. You will see a mention of relatives settling near Butler, Mercer County. If anyone has any information on an Alexander family that would fit, I would be most appreciative of any help. Regards, Tom Yurick I am searching for information on James Alexander. James Alexander b. Scotland m. Margaret McFarland. Came to America about 1794. The following is a biographical sketch done in 1894 by James Alexanders' grandson. It appears that the uncles of James Alexander may be some of the Alexanders that have been mentioned on the list in the past, judging by the locations. I have documents tying the family to Covington, KY as well. Any help much appreciated. Biographical Sketch of the Alexander Family By William James Alexander, youngest son of Archibald Alexander, who was the oldest son of James and Margaret Alexander. Soon after the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America, there emigrated to this country four brothers whose surname was Alexander. They were of Scotch ancestry. On arriving in America, I am informed, they settled in four different states of the Union. One settled in the State of North Carolina, one in Virginia, one in New York, and one in the State of Pennsylvania near the town of Butler, Mercer County. About the year 1794 a nephew of these four brothers, by the name of James Alexander, with his wife and two children, all of Scotch descent, emigrated to America from the North of Ireland, having lived in the North of Ireland for a number of years before coming to America. They settled in Salem, Washington County, New York. >From these four brothers and nephew, James Alexander, descended all the American born Alexanders that I know anything about. I regret that I am unable to trace my ancestry further back than my grandparents, James and Margaret Alexander, who settled at Salem, New York, and afterwards moved with their family to Erie, Penn'a, where both James and Margaret Alexander died and were buried. I will confine my record to their family and their descendents, who can now be found in nearly all parts of the United States. James Alexander married Margaret McFarland in Ireland about the year 1787 and emigrated to America about the year 1794 and first settled at Salem, Washington County, New York. They had born to them eleven children, all lived to mature years, and most of them to old age, and all but one, "Delilah", left children to survive them. Children of James and Margaret Alexander: Archibald b. Ireland June 12, 1789 Rebecca b. Ireland James A. b. Salem, NY Mary b. Salem, NY Margaret b. Salem, NY Susan b. Salem, NY William b. Salem, NY Jane b. Salem, NY Martha b. Salem, NY Isabel b. Salem, NY Delilah b. Salem, NY All of the above are now dead, December 5, 1894
Becky, It just dawned on me that there are two Hell's Hollows in Mercer Co. that I know of. Perhaps you were referring to the one a couple of miles out of Mercer on Route 62 going toward Sharon and turn left and down the hill into Hell's Hollow. The one I was referring to is off Route 58 out of Mercer going toward Greenville in the little village of Hamburg (or New Hamburg--I can never remember which). You might have been correct about the headless horseman. If that isn't enough to boggle your mind, how about Hell's Kitchen off Route 965 just over the Mercer Co. line into Venango Co. Sorry, I can't dredge up any stories but I'll bet there are some. National Fuel Gas has had their business down there in the hollow as long as I can remember. Great deer hunting area. I never did find out why it is called Hell's Kitchen. The first word I can understand but I don't get the significance of the Kitchen. Wouldn't it be fun if someone sees this and can enlighten us? Dear Linda, We found connections between you and my husband's ancestors in Mercer County (the Barnes and Montgomery); now we have found a common ancestral surname between my ancestors in Armstrong and Clarion County and yours. A stretch, but my information: Rachel Cochran 1772-1851 lived in Piney Township, Armstrong County (Clarion County after 1839), daughter of Alexander Cochran b. 1733 in Ireland and Agnes ? It seems interesting that all of my husband's ancestors from Mercer County and the Cochrans came from Ireland. You never know when someone on a list will see a familiar name & have more information, so My line: Rachel Cochran m. Andrew Magee Rachel Magee m. Ira Scott Nancy Scott m. Levi Boyer Wm A Boyer m. Alice Adams Wm A Boyer m. Maysie Rush O. Dale Boyer m. Martha Hendrick Sandra Boyer m. Robert Barnes All are from Clarion/Armstrong County but mom. The Hendrick is a SW VA Blue Ridge Mountain family. One of my Armstrong County lines is the COCHRAN family. Lizzie Belle Cochran married Joseph Daugherty/Dougherty and according to my information, moved to Mercer County and lived in Sharon, where they had the following children: Thomas Cochran Dougherty, Margaretta Dougherty and Fred Dougherty. Thomas Cochran Dougherty married Isabelle Range of Gary, Indiana, and had children, Thomas Cochran Dougherty, Jr., and Richard Range Dougherty. Margaretta married Harold Camp. Hello all! It is my turn! I am researching many lines but the one that has got me right now is my Ealy line. John Ealy married Margaret Smoker - they came from Mifflin County, PA to Lawrence County, PA. The only child of theirs that I know is Jacob S. Ealy born April 26, 1830, who was married twice - Margaret Kuser and Sarah Koser were his wives. Jacob and Sarah had nine children - one of them being my great grandfather, Victor Lincoln Ealy. At some point the clan came to Mercer County PA where my grandfather, father etc were born and raised as was I. Unfortunately I have yet to find anyone else who is researching this line! If anyone out there is researching this line or any line that ties into it please contact me and I will be happy to share what little bit I know! Thank you! Ronda Mogadore, Ohio
To MOON researchers, The Moons I have information on are all descended from George Moon (1758 -1856) and Ruth Ann(a) (Martin?) Moon (ca. 1773 - 1860-70). There were many marriages from the Moon family into my direct lines, including CRILL and BOSTON. I'd be glad to share with anyone. To Marilyn, sorry, no, I checked and couldn't find any information on a Mary Moon who matched your information. Cheers, Linda Champanier (in Stamford, Connecticut, where we got almost NO snow!)

Have enjoyed all the activity on the Mercer Co list recently although the names aren't familiar. I cannot believe that with all those belonging to the list no one has knowledge of my Mahans. Our first known ancestor William Mahan came from PA to Mo in 1779 or 1799 (both dates being in history books) with a hunting party of DELAWARE Indians thru Shannon Co MO and loved the clear running rivers of the Current and Jacks Fork, the thick forests and plentiful game supply. He returned to PA and brot his family back took him 25 yrs if this legend is correct. Altho a Jacob Mahan was in Mo in 1807 so may have been a son or brother. the Mahans are credited with being the first white settlers in Shannon Co Mo but were at a dead end in Mercer Co. Unless we can find a marriage for William and his son James who married Jane????? gkile@semo.net
