Fuhrman, 1994. Robert Fuhrman was the director of the Mercer County Historical Society. The booklet has 61 pages, 276 footnotes and many pictures of the various courthouses. I am not prepaired to make a book report on it here. It was available last summer for $5.00 plus $1.00 for s & h from the MCHS, 119 South Pitt Street, Mercer, PA 16137. 3. I'm on my way to the P.O. to mail the info on obituary archives from the Sharon Herald. Since you are on the Mercer County list, it may come in handy. If you don't have any luck finding the obit, let me know. Sometimes it takes knocking on doors to get what one wants. 1. [PAMERCER-L] Civil War
    2. Hi all, I'm a new subscriber here and am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I'm trying to track down an ancestor, Daniel KNOTT (1837-1900, approx.), who may have served in the Civil War in Mercer County, in the 39th Regiment, Company G. The NJ 1890 census lists him as serving in Pottsville, PA's 48th Regiment, Company G, but I couldn't find him in any of the 48th's rosters. I did, however, find a Daniel Knott in Mercer County's 39th Regiment, Company G, doing a 3-month service during the same timeframe, July-Sept, 1863. Can anyone point me to information about that regiment, or others, that were in Mercer County at the time? I'd like to find out why he's listed in 2 different regiments. Perhaps he started in the Pottsville 48th and then moved west, enlisting with a different one in Mercer? Thanks for any info you can provide on Mercer and the Civil War. 1. [PAMERCER-L] Coroner's Inquest
    2. K. Brubaker
    3. Hello everyone! I have a question that there may be no answer for at this time - but what the heck, I'll ask it anyway. I know the Mercer County Courthouse was destroyed awhile back in a fire, but I never give up hope - I am looking for any records that might be available from a coroner's inquest held in Greenville in December of 1869! Would there be any record of this anywhere? Does anyone have suggestions?!?!? My 4th great-grandfather and his wife were killed in a house fire in Greenville, and I have a newspaper article detailing the death and that there was a coroner's inquest held - but subsequent articles of the newspaper do NOT say what the outcome was. I've copied the article below for anyone interested. ANY HELP or direction would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! GREENVILLE, DEC. 7, 1869 - Our town is beginning to be as notorious in the matter of fires, as was Meadville some two years ago. On the morning of the 6th, at four A.M., the alarm of fire was given, and the dwelling of a Mr. Van Dusen in the south east part of the town was discovered to be in flames. Before any assistance could be rendered, the whole building was in ruins, and to add to the horror of the calamity, the burnt and blackened bodies of the old gentleman and his wife were found in the ruins, burnt to a cinder and past recognition. Various rumors are afloat as to the cause of the fire. Some claim foul play, as the old man was known to have had quite a sum of money, in gold, in his possession. The coroner's jury was sittin all day yesterday, but no verdict was rendered up to this writing. I think there is no doubt that the fire originated from a defective flue, as the chimney in that part of the house where the fire originated was struck by lighting last summer and shattered to such an extent as to make it unsafe, and it was never repaired. Thanks for any help or guidance! Kathy (Van Dusen) Brubaker kbrbkr@toolcity.net

He was a steelworker and lived on Fisher Hill Street in Sharon and also in Sharpsville at one point. He married Vera M. LUCE (1878-1911) (my 3G Aunt, dau. of Josiah LUCE & Margaret ORR) in 1895. They had two children: Ruth (1900-1923), married Leo J. CURTAIN, two children, Robert & James; Stanley (1902-). She married Charles James (Charlie) LANGLEY (my 3G uncle, son of James S. LANGLEY & Jane UPPINGTON) (1862-1953) in 1892 in Sharon. 1. [PAMERCER-L] Curious Names of Localities
    2. Ed Lloyd & Family
    3. A few years ago the Youngstown Vindicator (Youngstown, OH) printed a series on localities in their reading vicinity. It was researched by their staff reporters. The description of this series was: "Our people gave interesting, even curious names to many localities. Some names are still in common use. Others aren't well known beyond the local gentry. And some have faded away, lost in the natural evolution of change. In this Sunday series, we spotlight some of these names and the communities behind them." This series went on for over 3 years. Collector that I am, I saved them, copied them and made myself a booklet. I have 179 of them. The localities are in Columbiana, Mahoning, and Trumbull Counties in Ohio and Mercer, Lawrence and perhaps Crawford County, PA. (I may have missed a couple, a couple of times I had to write the Vindicator for one.) I wrote them to ask if they were going to consolidate them all into one book, as far as I know, they didn't. This week I plan to make a list of these localities. If you are interested in this list, please e-mail me, and I send you a Word 97 attachment. Joanne

Her grandfather, Merle SLOAN was born 19 Jan 1902 and died Oct 1974 in the Sharon area of Mercer Co., PA. He was born as a TATE (TAIT) and was adopted by a SLOAN family at about age 7. He had 2 brothers that we know about, Sam & Carl SLOAN. He married Thelma PORTERFIELD who was born 1907 and died 1954. Thelma had 14 siblings 2 of whom were John & Bill PORTERFIELD. This is not very much to start with, but any help would be appreciated. Thank you Dan Lanter Abilene, TX dlanter@camalott.com

    1. [PAMERCER-L] 1922 Sharon Herald Article
    2. Pamela Bellanca
    3. Hi all! Just want to share this article. There are names other than the family I am researching plus I thought you all might think it interesting. Hope some of you benefit! Pam gennut@nauticom.net SHARON COUPLE WED 63 YEARS.....................Sharon Herald, 1922, pg. 12 Mr. and Mrs. Patrick McMahon of North Sharon are the oldest married couple in Mercer County. They have been married 63 years, their anniversary falling in May. Patrick McMahon and Bridget McNerney, born within 14 miles of each other in County Clare, Ireland, met for the first time when youth and maid in Canada, and were married at Trent, Ont., near Belleville, by Father Britton, then pastor of the Catholic parish at that place. The chimes of life's Vesper Years and their wedding bells blend in a sweet harmony of memories and like a benediction fill the calm and placid hours of Age as a just reward for lives well spent. When married the couple settled down at Trent, where Mr. McMahon was lumberman. He recalls that then he received 50 cents a day for cording wood and that two cords was a good day's work. He was 24 then and his bride about the same age. The couple lived for 10 years in Canada and in Maine. They then went to Buffalo, N. Y., where Mr. McMahon worked on the Lake Shore & North East Railroad for five years. The family then moved to North East, near Erie, and then on Ash Wednesday, 1872, Mr. McMahon came to Sharon to work in the Old Mill for James Westerman, who he calls "The best man ever in Sharon." "In those days, in good times," he said, "the puddlers got $9 a ton and when pay was low $4.50, while laborers got as high as $1.50 and $1.75 and as low as $1 a day. The stores along State street were up on stilts. If you got off the sidewalks you got into mud and a lot of trouble. At what is now the McDowell Bank corner, one had to stick to the walk or sink in the street. Father O'Keefe was the priest here then. The burgess was either James Wilson or A. G. Whitcraft. The East Hill was known as "Carver's Hill." Soon after Mr. McMahon came to Sharon he sent for his family. They lived first on what is now known as upper Railroad street and later in the vicinity of the present Cave and Sharpsville avenues. In 1888 the family moved to McMahon Corners, now in North Sharon. "They said I was a fool for going so far out in the country," commented Mr. McMahon to a Herald man yesterday. "There were only three houses here then--Charles Heinz, Mrs. Gills' and our own." Today the McMahon home is ideally located at the gateway of beautiful Buhl Farm and the center of a handsome residential district. Six children came to bless the union. The children are Mrs. Ella McMahon Manley, Mis Mary McMahon, John McMahon, Michael McMahon, Mrs. Bridget English, (deceased), and Katherine McMahon, who died when a small girl. There are also 19 living grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. McMahon are happy as in those first glad days in Canada. They have lived well and long and in their hearts there still ring those wedding bells, for they are sweethearts still.
