Is there a historical society in Sharon, PA. Does anyone know the postal address or e-mail website address? Joani H.
Steve, Yes, there is mention of James McConnells in the 1873 History of Mercer Co., pp. 107, 109, 91. and also mention of Alexander, p. 74, Arthur p 99, Hugh p. 109, J. W. p41. p. 91 "In 1862, James McConnell and Thompson Hyde built a steam saw-mill, opposite where the store now stands, and from that date the surrounding woods rapidly disappeared. The large steam saw-mill, now is operation in the western part of the place, was erected in the spring of 1871, by S. S. Semple, and a heavy business was performed there during the years immediately following. The little frame-building was moved, and Jacob Wise occipied it for a time, and boarded teh mill-hands, and was thus the second settler in the place. " p. 107 "The Presbyterian and Associate Reformed were among the pioneer churches of this north-western portion of the State.............The members of the Presbytery, at this time, were .........James McConnells, at Puckety....". p 109 "....The flour-mill was, probably, built in 1831, by James McConnell, but there are conflicting statements regarding it, the most reliable authorities in Middlesex adopting the above date, and Mr. McConnell himself affirming that the date should be 1837; the advanced age of the latter, however, would render his recollection less accurate than that of our younger informants. It stood on the west side of the Shenango, just below the log-mill, upon which it was a vast improvement; burrs were used instead of native stone, and after it commenced operations, the old mill was removed and used as a stable until it rotted away." "THE FIRST STORE was opened about 1831, by D. Foreman, in McConnell's old house, the latter having built a more substantial residence." Well, hope this helps. Always glad to help. Robert Donley ran off to CA in the 1849 gold rush and abandoned his wife and four children. Donley and Drake both lived in Plain Grove, Lawrence Co., PA Biographies of the first two Hooblers are listed in the 1888 History of Mercer Co. How are you related to these early families? Do you have any more info on these early Hooblers? Jim Sterrett/Palo Alto, CA sterrett@ix.netcom.com

Hello listmembers, The transcription of East Lackawannock Township of the 1870 Mercer County census is finished. As with the other transcriptions, I've put together an "index" which lists individuals alphabetically by surname, with first names, ages and family number. If you would like a copy of the index (700 individuals) drop me a line. I am trying to locate information about my great grandfather John W English (#977 1850 Census) and his wife Elizabeth Caroline Hover. John W (initial only) was born 9-18-1845 nine miles north, 1/2 mile east of Mercer, PA (Cool Spring). His wife Elizabeth was born 9-27-1846 somewhere close to this same location. English family letters indicate that Elizabeth Caroline Hover's parents were Samuel Hover and Elizabeth Pierice. Elizabeth Caroline Hover's siblings: Henderson, Lee, Marietta, Sadie, William, and Emma. There are Hovers listed on the 1850 census, but I don't seem to be able to tie them to my great grandmother. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You Bill English wlenglish@aol.com

My great-grandfather, Cyrus Montgomery, had a brother named Renwick. There are also two other Renwicks in that branch of the Montgomery family. I know they were in the US from the 1600s on, so they wouldn't be the same immediate family as your James, since he was born in Ireland. I wonder why the name Renwick was used so much? Maybe they came to Mercer because they were related to 'my' Montgomerys? Does anyone know if Renwick was a common name for some reason? Hello Betty, Well, you've managed to come up with an unusual MONTGOMERY name. All the ones I find, of whatever family, are William, John, James, Hugh, Humphry, Robert, David, Daniel, and Nathaniel. I did find one Ezekiel and was overwhelmed by the novelty. FLORUS should be a godsend. If you ever find him, which I have not, there will be no mistaking him, or wondering which of the many MONTGOMERY men with the same name you have in hand. Good luck searching. Nancy Hagen-Liddle
Hello list members, I appreciate the kind comments I've received regarding the 1870 census transcriptions. I have also received a few requests to search for specific surnames in the indexes - I only wish I had the time to do that, but because of time constraints, I'm afraid I cannot. The "index" has been set up to allow searching for specific surnames as easy as possible. I regret that I cannot do the search for you but encourage you to ask for the indexes - they are not too large and easily fit within an e-mail message. Hello listmembers, The transcription of Delaware Township of the 1870 Mercer County census is finished. As with the Deer Creek and Cool Spring transcriptions, I've put together an "index" which lists individuals alphabetically by surname, with first names and ages included. With this township, I have also added the family number as given in the census. This will allow you to separate families of the same surname, as well as to find individuals of different surnames who are living in the same dwelling (simply search by family number). If you would like a copy of the index (it's a bit long - over 1,700 names) drop me a line. Regards, John MacDonald 1021 Hancock Road Williamstown MA 01267-3021 413-458-0056 macillus@bcn.net
Nancy E. Hagen-Liddle wrote: I am researching MONTGOMERY in Ohio, Pa and WVa. It's not a fun job, since they appear to have been thick as flies, and not necessarily from the same hatchery either. But I'm always hopeful. If you have anything on the ELIZABETH MONTGOMERY you mentioned in your email, please contact me. Thanks, Nancy Hagen-Liddle (nhagenliddle@compuserve.com) ------------ Nancy (or anyone else researching Montgomery in PA and OH), Do you have anything on Florus P. Montgomery who lived at various times in Mercer County and across the stateline in Trumbull County, OH? Birth year I have found listed as 1845 and 1855. Thanks.
