Dear List, I am going to put my brick wall "out there" again hoping someone new may see it. My ggggrandfather was Joseph Franklin Fisher. Born Mercer Cty., PA March 11 1836 or 1837. I do not "know" his siblings or Parents. It is supposed that his father is also Joseph Fisher. There has also been reference that his father was a minister. I do have other information on him but I am trying to find a record of his birth and family. all the other info I have is from ILL where he joined the civil war. Thanks to all, Sheryl Beireis
Well, that's something, a small world. I'll try the Historical Society, I seen it when I parked to go into the Courthouse. I'll check back on the census online. The Franklin library is a good source so I'd believe the library would have some good information. Thanks alot. I'll be checking back with you from time-to-time. If I can be of help don't hesitate to email. I'll be out there listening in. Henry Reyhel is shown in Wilmington Twp. in the 1850 census. Living with him is a mystery person, Jacob Guim. There are no Guim's in the 1800 census, nor in Orphan's Court. Would anybody have an idea of other ways this name could be spelled or pronounced? Thank You Karen Patterson
I meant Sandy Creek...I think Amy
"History of Mercer County Pennsylvania--1888" Vol. 2, pp. 886-887, from a bio-sketch of John McWhirter: John McWhirter, farmer, post- office Hill, was b: November 15, 1809, in County Derry, Ireland, s/o Samuel, who was b: in Ireland in 1785, and was married to Mary McCune, to whom were born the following children in Ireland: John, Jane, Margaret, Mary A. and Charlotte. They came to America in 1822 and located near New Wilmington, where were born to them Samuel, Sarah, Joseph, Alexander and Nancy. Samuel, Sr, was a weaver, which occupation he followed through life. He d: October 16, 1840, at the age of fifty-five years. His widow lived to the ripe old age of seventy- five years. They were members of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, and of the Seceder Church at New Wilmington. Politically Samuel was a Democrat. John, our subject, came to Lackawannock Twp in 1839, and purchased the Kelly farm of 100 acres. He was married to Jane Black, of Washington County, August 25, 1842, and located on the farm. Samuel A., now living in Texas, was born to them. Mrs. McWhirter d: June 30, 1844. He was married December 15, 1847, to Margaret CLARK, of Harlensburg, by whom he had two children: Robert, living in Findley Twp, and Margaret J., living in Illinois. His second wife died February 27, 1850. He was again married July 31,1851, to Mary J. Garvin, a cousin of the Hon. W. S. Garvin, of Mercer. To this union were born seven children: David, Nancy L. , deceased; Joseph A., Elizabeth A., James B., William S. and John. In politics he is a Democrat. They were members of the United Presbyterian Church of Bethel. P. 993-994 of the same book: bio-sketch of Thomas Vanatta, b: 20Dec1833, s/o John and Mary (Crawford) Vanatta, was married (1838) to Elizabeth, d/o William and Nancy (Boyd) CLARK. Her father was b: 1802, IRE, and came to America when age 21. Her mother was b: 1801. Her parents were married in Lawrence Co, 1832, the result being seven children: Mary , Agnes, Elizabeth, William, Rebecca, Margaret and Samuel. Her father d: 1882, and her mother 1884, and were members of the Presbyterian Church. Elizabeth(Mrs.Vanatta) b: 25May1835, eight children: Nancy J., John W., a farmer in KS; Robert, Frank, Maggie E., Elizabeth A., Sarah E. and Clara M. Thomas and Elizabeth were members of the Cool Spring Presbyterian Church. ... This bio-sketch also mentions Margaret J. , a sister of Thomas, who married William CLARK. The above info is an excerpt from the bio-sketch. If you think this is the family you are researching I shall be glad to type it in its entirety. Vol 1, p. 376-377, 'Manufacturers': "...The next grist-mill was built in 1822 By Giles Clark, on hte west bank of the river, opposite the site of the Sharon Iron Works. A few years afterward he put in fulling and carding machinery. These mills were operated by Giles and Lemuel Clark, and subsequestly by Conrad G. Carver, a well, remembered..." Vol 1, p. 388, 'Disciples or Christian Church': there is a Lemual Clark and wife, are listed as charter members of the church. Nothing more is written about them. I hope this info is beneficial in someway. M. Davidson [email protected] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Subject: [PAMERCER] CLARKS Date: Mon, 10 Mar 2003 23:33:09 EST I see a couple of you are making headway on the Clarks. Can either of you make a connection with my Margaret Jane Clark, B. 1828 to a Mr. Clark (maybe Lemuel?? no proof on that) and Elizabeth, b. about 1793, maybe in Ireland. Margaret Jane Clark was the second wife of John McWhirter, b. 1809 in Derry, Ireland. Margaret died 7 days after giving birth to her second child Margaret Jane McWhirter, in 1850. I'm descended from her first child, a son Robert Clark McWhirter. I'm pretty sure that Elizabeth Clark was living in Sandy Spring Twp in 1850 and 60, but I could be wrong there, too. Could just as easily have been Cool Spring. Thanks, Amy McWHirter Hutton
Just thought I would tell you there is also a Sandy Creek Township, which was quite large in the early days and later divided into 4 townships. \ This is getting too good!! Albert Otto was my husband's grandfather and he lived with his son Kenneth at a rural Polk address!! The historical society is across from the Courthouse in Mercer. They have alot of information and are very helpful. Altho I have never been to the Library in Sharon, they are supposed to have great information also. Have you checked out the Mercer County Geneology site on your computer?? They have several years census there for you to check. I found my great grandparents at ages 20 and 21 in West Salem Township. Mercer County had quite a few homes involved in the underground railroad and there is a cemetary you might check out in Stoneboro. If I can help anymore don't hesitate to write. Doris, I agree completely, that we are all brothers and sisters in Christ. When mentioned an Albert I thought of an Albert Otto Law who lived near Franklin, Polk I think. At the time I didn't know my Albert's middle name. I learned that these two Albert's were born the same year and in the same County. It's strange how people so closely named may have never come into contact with each other. I was in the Mercer County Court House to look up some marriage records and property deeds earlier this year. Haven't gotten to the Genealogy library or building. Where is it located? I live in Pittsburgh, PA and would like to look up some census records to better define my Great-great Grandfather's and Mother's history in Mercer County. I also need to track others here who may have been involved with the Underground Railroad. Researching ancestors is exciting work and you certainly meet some of the nicest people such as yourself. Thanks for your time. My "Family legend" is: "Thomas Clark came west from NJ with millstones originiating in France and by ship to NJ. .... founded Grist mill in Clark's Mills , PA, ... Clarks intermarried with Turners, and Turners with Bells. " My father, Raymond Bell inherited three of the millstones and had them moved when the mill was torn down. An attorney wrote to him in the early 1940's, saying he (Raymond) was the surviving heir and did he want the stones. I know where the millstones are. I am Raymond's daughter. The Turner-Bell connection is my GGParents, JOHN ELMER BELL and EMMA SUSANNA TURNER, married Mercer Co, PA Pg. 726 (Mercer Co. Courthouse). Emma's parents were ALEXANDER TURNER and LOUISA EMILY POWELL (who signed for Emma, a minor, to marry.) Now seeking connection ALEXANDER TURNER with ELSNEY TURNER, wife of GILES CLARK. Please contact me at [email protected]
GILES CLARK married to ELSNEY TURNER founded the Grist Mill at what became (and is still today) Clark's Mills, in Perry Twp. Mercer Co PA. I'm seeking a connection between ELSNEY TURNER and my GGGrandfather, ALEXANDER TURNER b.5-1828 PA, d. 4-11-1898, Perry Twp, Mercer Co. Pa, and buried with his wife LOUISA EMILY POWELL TURNER in Peterson Cem. Mercer Co, PA Please contact me at [email protected]

My Grandfather's brother was named Albert Edward Law and his nickname was "Hun." I don't know of any children he had. My Laws were from around Franklin, PA but my Great-great Grandfather George L. Law, lived and worked in Cool Springs, Mercer County back in 1840-50. He was of African descend, and moved to Venango County around 1860. He had 10 children and his first born was Charles, who is my Great Grandfather. Charles is the father of my Grandfather, Fredrick, and Albert Edward. Charles had 15 other children.
