Actually, the 1897 Mercer County Directory contains a listing : FURNITURE & UNDERTAKING: J. W. Clark, Liberty Street, Jamestown. A later newspaper business directory refers to the S. Clark furniture and undertaking.
Claudia, I think our data is generally consistent with each other's, other than the fact that we show a different middle initial for John Uber. I'd be interested if you have any more information about the Rodgers side of the family. Thanks! Steve Seiple [email protected] wrote: >Steve, > >I have a John P. Uber not a John H. Uber. Churches in Jamestown in 1897: Baptist Catholic - Rev Donahue Methodist Episcopal - Rev. J.C. Gillette Presbyterian - Rev. J.L. Hunter United Presbyterian - Rev. J.M. Jameson Newspaper was The World published every Thursday The Sentinel There is no funeral home listed for Jamestown in the Business Directory for Mercer County in 1897. I cannot find any undertaker or funeral parlor listed. However, when I grew up there were Forrests living on the East Lake Road and they probably still live there. You could contact them. George, Thanks for the note! I am fairly confident that my Mary Elizabeth Uber married Nathaniel Culbertson Carey. I have no record of the Breckenridge connection. Perhaps that is a different Mary Uber? The Nathaniel Cary mentioned in your note is the grandfather of the Nathaniel Carey mentioned in my query. Yes, the elder Nathaniel was from New England, Connecticut I believe, and I also believe that he married Isabella McClintock. They settled in Venango County, PA. Thanks! That wasn't unusual in German families--using John as the first name for more than one son-- followed by a different "calling name" for each. Makes things confusing sometimes!
I am researching the Forrest Family, specifically George of Jamestown. He and two of his wives, Mattie Rouse and Nancy Jones are buried in Parklawn Cemetery. Could someone tell me the churches, funeral homes that might have been in the area when George died in 1899..( his wives preceded him.) I did find him on the 1870 census for the District Jamestown Boro Township. I am hoping to find information on his third marriage to my gr grandmother Margaret Elizabeth Bruce, and the birth of their twin sons in 1898. Thanks for any help possible. Fran
Actually John Harvey Uber, Sr and Catherine Harrold had 3 sons named John. John Peter Uber born March 26, 1797 who married 1st Maria Eva Keener and 2nd Mary Keener, John Michael Uber born July 26, 1799 who married Mary Ann Rodgers, and John Harvey Uber, Jr born September 26, 1803 who married 1st Elizabeth Rodgers (sister to the above Mary Ann) and 2nd Chloe Voorhies. John Harvey and Elizabeth are the parents of Mary Elizabeth Uber who married Nathaniel Culbertson Carey. Naming traditions have little to do with the way we do it nowdays. Middle names could be the daily usage, so having more than one John (especially with the mortality rate being what it was) in the hopes that one of them will survive to have families of there own wasn't that unusual. Steve, I have a John P. Uber not a John H. Uber. John P. was married to Elizabeth Sarah Rodgers. Elizabeth "Betsy" was born 11-11-1805 and died 9-1-1844. Their daughter, Mary Elizabeth was born 2-16-1836 in Springfield Twp., Mercer Co. and died 1-26-1913 in Deer Creek, Mercer Co, PA. Mary Elizabeth was married to Nathaniel Carey. Nathaniel and Mary Elizabeth's children were: Frances Clementine Carey, born 4-5-1860 and died 1944. She married James Dickson in 1890. James Hutchinson Carey, born 6-18-1863 and died 5-14-1935. He married Stella Caldwell in 1-21-1891. John Alexander Carey, born 3-21-1862 and died 4-27-1918. He married Mary Isabella Mailliard 6-3-1891. Charles Nathaniel Carey, born 10-15-1870 in Crawford PA and died 11-30-1949 in Deer Creek, Mercer Co., PA. He married Carrie Effie Neyman on 11-20-1895. Mary Ann Carey, born 1-29-1876 and died 1958. She married Louis M. Coleman 9-1-1897. Hope this helps. I'm from Elizabeth Rodgers side of this family. Claudia Manly Claudia E. Hi Steve, I am researching some of these same families . I have Mary Elizabeth Uber married to Wallace Breckenridge. They had two children: Charles Breckenridge b. 15Mar1861 and Jacob Walter Breckenridge b. 1870. I have no good dates for Mary Elizabeth. Nathaniel Carey was from New England married to Isabella McClintock...I have no good dates for them either, but feel that they are the same folks that you are looking for. Hope that this might help a little. Also, I am looking for Clifford UBER and Emma Mary Davidson UBER from Mercer County, PA George H. Gardner
My ancestor is Mary Elizabeth Uber (1836-1913). She married Nathaniel Carey and they resided in Mercer County, PA. My information indicates she was the daughter of John H. Uber (1803-?) and Elizabeth Rodgers (1805-?). Further John H. Uber is shown as the son of John Uber (b. 1775) and Catherine Harrold. John is shown as the son of the immigrant, Peter Uber who originally settled in Westmoreland County, PA. In reviewing a Uber family history posted on the Mercer County genweb page, John is listed as the son of Peter. However, there is no mention of John H. being one of John's children. Can anyone confirm who the children of John Uber and Catherine Harrold were? Does anyone else have information about Nathaniel Carey and Mary Elizabeth Uber? Thanks in advance! Steve Seiple
George, I think Isabella McClintock is Steve's. Isabella's brother, Hamilton McClintock (b. 1771 in Maryland), is my ancestor. Their parents were Hugh McClintock (b. 1750 in Cumberland Co., PA) and Ann Carruthers (b. in MD). Hugh served in the Revolutionary War.
