New at the Pennsylvania State Archives - ARIAS Digital State Archives http://www.digitalarchives.state.pa.us/archive.asp (after the page opens, scroll down the page to the listing below:) Civil War Veterans' Card File, 1861-1866 -- {series #19.12} Arranged alphabetically by surname of soldier. These 3" x 5" cards were initially prepared to serve as an index to Samuel Penniman Bates' "History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-1865," (Harrisburg, 1869-1871). The Office of the Adjutant General later expanded the scope of the cards by transcribing onto them data found on the original Civil War Muster Rolls and Related Records, 1861-1866 {series #19.11}. The information generally includes the soldiers' names, military units, Bates' citations (volume and page), ages at enrollment, descriptions (complexion, height, color of hair and eyes), residences and birthplaces; the dates and places where enrolled; the dates and places where mustered in; and the dates of discharge. The listing is not inclusive.
Hi: Thank you for 1860 Mercer census. I have Cozads and Mcelheny in family tree, but best of all it was fun to get some insight on Mercer of that time. thanks to all who sent the info to me on how to request records in Pa.. I would like to pass along this information from our local Vital records here in Chillicothe Ohio. the cost for birth and death records is only .50 until July 1, 2003. then because of the recent House Bill 95 passage, the cost jumps to $10.00 per copy. and only certified copies will be available. so if anyone needs this kind of info , please do it soon. thanks again, you have all been most helpful. gwen
The form you need for the death certificate can be found by going to www.vitalrec.com and choosing PA. I have never had to send a copy of my photo ID in the past. Perhaps they've changed that? Pat www.rootsweb.com/~pabutle2
All the information and addresses you need can be found on, or linked to, the Mercer County Rootsweb site.
New castle has been very helpfull to me. I recently sent in 6 requests together with a SASE and got them back within a week and a half. You can do a search for PA VITAL RECORDS and it will take you to the site with all of the information. You can then down load a form to send with all of the informtion and addresses. It is really easy. http://www.vitalrec.com/pa.html Good luck KIM
I perked up when I saw the name SCHAEFFER. I wonder if your Louis Schaeffer might be related in some way. My Grandfather, Henry J. Schaeffer or Schaefer, was born 12-6-1864 in London England, the son of Henry H. Schaeffer (born 1841 in Germany) and Margaret Callahan (born 1840 in Ireland), and the oldest of 5 children, Henry Joseph, John "Joe", Rebecca, Florence, Edward. The family immigrated to Canada and settled in or near Fort Erie. Margaret died there and Henry H. remarried to Mary Gallagher, a Catholic. A 6th sibling, Marie, was born, though I don't know if it was to Margaret or to Mary. Henry J. , as a teenager, upset with his new step-mother, stowed away aboard a boat bound across Lake Erie to Buffalo, New York. He worked along the water front and eventually secured a job with the railroad. Apparently he had no further contact with his family so far as anyone in my family knows. He met and married Henrietta Martha "Nettie" Smith in Buffalo, NY They moved west along the railroad line to Ashtabula, OH where they lived out their lives and had 5 children, the youngest of whom was my mother. Their children were Margaret, Henry, Jr., Harold, Stella, and Mabel. Nettie died 1926, Henry J. married twice more (no further children), retired from Bow Socket Co, and died 1942. Both thought to be buried in Ashtabula, OH. All 3 daughters have died, whereabouts of the two boys unknown but believed to be New York State. If you have a connection, or if anyone seeing this knows anything, please email me at [email protected] I live in Arizona.
Not sure if any of this will help...but to me it looks like she married in Germany, Baden to be specific. Good Luck!! Terry Boyer, Henry PA MERCER CO. This name is an Irish or Gaelic name from Mac Gairbhith (from the word garbh for rough) They came from County Armagh. In Dublin the name has been traced back to 300 AD Gobnait Ní Leocháin Genealogy: Confusing the dead & irritating the living.

I have a Gevin Family in Crawford, Co. Peter Gevin (Pierrie Chauvin) a French Revolutionary War Solider with wife and family from Berks Co, PA arrived in what is now Vernon Twp in 1803. The Chauvin (That's as close as I can get to the original spelling.) has been spelled so many different ways that Garvin could be a variant. The Twins were my grandfather and his brother. H.H. ( Henry Hutchinson) Forrest was a brother to my Great grandfather George Forrest, who died in 1899. The boys that visited him are older stepbrothers to my grandfather ( the twin). H. H. has a bio in the History of Mercer Co. by White. Both he and his brother served with the Union in the Civil War in Washington D.C. where H. H. served as the left front mounted guard at the funeral procession of Abraham Lincoln. H. H. is credited with obtaining a Civil War cannon for Jamestown I believe.. or Mercer County.
The birth of twin boys to Mr. & Mrs. George Forrest on August 5, 1898, is included in the Year in Review, Jamestown Sentinel, Jan. 15, 1899. No further information.
The following article appears on the front page of the January 8, 1916 Jamestown World: SUCCESSFUL JAMESTOWN BOYS. Messrs. George J. and Wm. S. Forrest were the guests of their uncle, H.H. Forrest, New Year's Day. They were formerly Jamestown boys and spent many a happy day in our little city. George left here 28 years ago to work for the Street Railway Co. of Pittsburgh, remaining with them 3 years. He resigned and accepted a position in the Passenger Dept. of Pittsburg & Lake Erie Ry. where he remained 11 years. He then went into the livery business in New Castle where he conducts one of the leading liverys in the city. William, after his father's death 16 years ago, went to live with his brother George, graduating from high school and Smith's Business college. When finished, he left for Ardmore, Okla., where he holds an official position with that city as City Controller. He will remain in New Castle until about Jan. 10, when he will return to his home.
