I am new to this list and researching my husband's family of Elk and Erie counties of PA. The following obit from the Sharon newspaper, name and date unknown - probably year 1905, was found in papers belonging to descendants of Ellen Clifford who married Patrick Reed before 1840, place unknown. Both were born in Ireland, Ellen c 1820 and Patrick in March of 1818. No death for Ellen has been found but Patrick d1892 in Erie and is buried in Trinity Cem. Time frame could possibly make Margaret the mother of Ellen. Descendants of Patrick and Ellen Clifford Reed are: John Reed b: Abt. 1840 in Rhode Island Elizabeth Reed b: 19 Nov 1844 in Ridgeway, Elk Co., PA d: 07 Oct 1917 in Erie , Erie Co., PA M. +Bernard Braniff b: 21 Jan 1837 in Brandy Camp, Elk Co., PA d: 26 May 1908 in Erie , Erie Co., PA Simon Reed b: 19 Nov 1844 in NY Jane Reed b: Abt. 1853 Silicia "Cecia" Reed b: Abt. 1854 in NY M name may be ? Tythe "ALMOST REACHED CENTURY MARK Death of Mrs. Margaret Clifford, of Wheatland, at the age of 98 years. Almost a centerian? and probably the oldest woman in the state, Mrs. Margaret Clifford, who was in her 98th year, died at 11 o'clock Sunday evening at the home of her son, John Clifford, proprietor of the Lee house at Wheatland. Up until about six weeks ago, Mrs. Clifford was able to be up and around but her strength failing gradually, she was compelled to take to her bed and the end came peacefully last night. Mrs. Clifford was born in Monmouth, Gloucestershire, England, in 1807, but her people moved to London and there she spent the early part of her life. Even to the last her memory of things and events of the long ago was perfect and she delighted to tell how she had witnessed the coronation festivities when in 1837 Queen Victoria was crowned. She was in London three years later when the queen was married to Prince Albert, of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Her maiden name was Margaret Evans." Does anyone have any information about Margaret or John Clifford or about the Lee House of Wheatland. Anything at all will be of help. Peggy R. McAndrew Rocky Mount, VA
Hi Steve & Jeri In 1850 the two listed below are living next to each other in Salem Twp. In 1850 in Sandy Creek there is another David Lyn (age 40) md to a Margaret who has a daughter Mary age 8. As well as George, John, Malica, & Milo. Could that be the Mary that married Oliver Caldwell? She would be old enough to marry in 1861. I see an Oliver Caldwell age 10, son of Perry & Marilda in Sandy Creek in 1850. I live in Sharon, would it be easier for me to try and go to the Library and look them up myself? I am assuming that that is where they keep the film with their other records. Although I left the Shenango Valley in the summer of 1953 after graduating from high school, I guess I'd better jump in since I did grow up in Sharon and Farrell. From what I understand, that was an Air Force radar site in Brookfield, while the Air National Guard had a base adjacent to the Youngstown Airport (actually located in Vienna, Ohio). The ANG put up a water tower, which commercial pilots considered dangerous enough that many refused to land there in bad weather. I know from personal experience because, while my sister and I were waiting for a plane to Chicago in the summer of 1953, the pilot of our flight radioed the airport that he would not land because of the limited visibility. Officials had to contact another inbound flight that was also headed for Chicago to see if he could take any extra passengers. Fortunately, he agreed to take us.
