My distant cousin Carol Senior discovered through naturalization records that our McWhirters who came over in 1822 from N. Ireland actually entered the country through the St. Lawrence River on the border between US and Canada, not through the usual NYC or Phila or Baltimore routes. They then got off whatever second boat they were on at Erie, PA, and then came down to Lawrence County. Most ended up in Mercer, eventually. My question is this: does anyone know where to find records for people who entered the country this way in 1822-ships records, etc? I've checked all the usual sites and CDs for ship's lists, but none seem to have anything of much value, not like the other ports of entry. AmyHutton
What was your grandmother's name and when was Mr. White her guardian(approximate dates)? There were several Whites in the Jamestown area.
I wrote earlier, but forgot to mention THOMAS B. SMITH. All his obituaries in the New Castle papers said he was born there in 1838. He died 1887 in Lawrence Co.. The children were all young. He must have been born in Beaver or Mercer Co.Who were his parents or siblings? He married Jane(Jenny) John who was born in Wales 1848.
Researching Barringer, Eastlick, Thomas, Hunter, Mohler. All from Western Pa or Eastern, OH. Also interested in Mr. White, guardian to my grandmother. Lived in Mercer Co. Jamestown, PA. Thanks and Happy search everyone!
In search of: The Williams family shown in the Mercer county 1870 census: N.L. Williams age 31 Lucretia (Leslie) Williams, age 30, Bertha age 6, Harry age 1, Kate (Leslie)Stevenson age 20 (lucretia's sister) William Stevenson age 1. ( kate's son) > > The Williams family and the Leslie family were in the hardware business together. I've been unable to find N.L Williams and family after the 1870 census, with the exception of the nephew William Stephenson, who is listed as an orphan at Mercer Soldiers Orphan School along with his brother Percival. Lucretia's and Kate's brother, William O. Leslie, continued the hardware business as his own. > > Would appreciate any info on where the Williams family or Kate Stephenson (stevenson) went after 1870. I have searched without luck for Lucretia in Ohio, as both familes were originally from Ohio. I also did some research in the Washington Territory area.......the orphan William reportedly headed west when released from the orphanage in 1885. His brother Percival stayed in the PA/OH area most of his life. > > Any help would be appreciated! > > Leslie M.
My Learys came in before Ellis Island was set up. I think most of them docked at the Manhattan Lower St. Wharf in NYC those days. I don't know about the Boston or Philly ports of entry, but the NARA website probably has all of the dates recorded. Don
Joseph Nelson Limber, born 1839, d.1907, was the son of John and Margaret (Speir) Limber. Margaret was the daughter of John and Ann "Nancy" (Harnit) Speir who lived in West Salem. After John's death in 1813, Ann md. Joseph Nelson. Adella was Joseph's third wife. Would be interested in knowing your Trine connection. Perhaps we have corresponded before? Jessie Trine's paternal grandmother was Rebecca Kitch, sister of my gr-grandmother, Emma Kitch, who md. Elon Speir. Evelyn
My g'grandmother, Martha Ann Brown(1841-1908) married Robert McLaughlin (1828-1901) in 1866. According to the 1888 History of Mercer County, she was born in England and settled in Mercer County with her parents, George and Elizabeth. Her sister Eliza Jane was born in 1850 in Mercer County. My problem is, I have been unable to find any record of George and Elizabeth. My gg'grandfather, Daniel Christman (1821-1911) married Maria Anna Adam (1826-1876) before 1844. They were living in Berks County, PA during the 1850 census. They had settled in Delaware township by the 1860 census and were in Otter Creek township for the 1870 census. They had 13 children; Catherine Ada, Joseph Henry, Daniel, William, Sarah, Jonas, Mary, Sylvester, Lizetta, George, Nancy Ellen, Emma & Caroline. I would like to know who Daniel's parents were and if he had any siblings. My gggg'grandparents were John Stuver (1777-1865) and Susannah Solida (1787-1861). I believe they came from Berks County, PA. Their son George Stuver (1809-?) and his wife Susan (1810-1880) were my ggg'grandparents. Their son, Henry Stuver (1834-?)and his wife, Jane Pierce (1844-?) were my gg'grandparents. I would like to know about any siblings and John and Susannah's parents. My gg'grandfather, Jeffrey Bentley, was born in Hickory township in 1807 and died in West Salem township in 1854. His wife was Ann Morford (1814-1887). He had a brother William (1800-1872). I have been told that their father was also a Jeffrey Bentley. I would like to know where the elder Jeffrey Bentley came from, who his wife was, and if there were any other siblings. Kim: Do you have any information about a female Stewart marrying a John Jack? According to the book, The Fell Family in America, Erwin Fell married Elizabeth Jack and the names of her parents were given as ____ Stewart and John Jack. Elizabeth was born about 1843 so I am guessing her mother was born somewhere between 1800-1825. Any help would be appreciated. Bonnie Lundberg

Looking for the maiden name of the wife of Lemuel Clark (Clarke) was was b 1798 in CT, to Giles and Eliphal Johnson Clark. Lemuel married his wife Elizabeth on 12 July 1813 (no exact proof of the date-came from someone's files) in Trumbull County, OH. He died 1844 and is buried next to his wife in the Sheakleyville Cemetary, Mercer Co PA. The maiden name of Elizabeth is a brick wall for me. Today I found an entry in the LDS files that says that one Lemuel Clarke married a BETSEY or Elizabeth SMITH on Dec 7 1813 in Trumbull County, OH. Yes, I know I should be asking on the Trumbull County list...but the folks here are so very helpful on the Clark surname. Does anyone know anything about a Betsey/Elizabeth Smith marrying a Lemuel Clark? Lemuel was the son of Giles Clark who was the son of Francis Clark, yada yada Amy McWhirter Hutton
