Twentieth Century Biographical Dictionary of Notable Americans. Volumes I-X. Boston, MA: The Biographical Society, 1904. GILLESPIE, Eugene Pierce, representative, was born at Greenville, Pa., Sept. 24, 1852; son of Alexander Dumars and Nancy R. (Linn) Gillespie; grandson of David Gillespie, and great-grandson of Thomas Gillespie, who emigrated from county Tyrone, Ireland, settled near Greenville, Mercer county, Pa., in 1818, and married Hannah, daughter of Alexander Duncan, who had emigrated from county Tyrone, Ireland, in 1800. He attended the common schools, Allegheny college, Meadville, Pa., 1868-70, and St. Michael's college, Toronto, Canada, 1870-72, graduating in 1872. He read law in his father's office, was admitted to the bar in 1874 and practised in his native town. He was married, Nov. 25, 1880, to Ella Davidson of Sharon, Pa. He was chairman of Democratic county and state conventions and was a representative from Pennsylvania in the 52d congress, 1891-93. He was struck by a train at a crossing at Greenville, Pa., and died from the injuries received, Dec. 16, 1899." I was excited to find this biography for it seemed to shed a little more light on Thomas Gillespie's wife Hannah. There was a lot of speculation on whether she was a DuMars . This was the only thing I have found in reference to Hannah's possible surname. Like you I am very leery of all the details in Mercer County History books but this gives us a place to look. Many people were misreading the "biography" and thought this Hannah was David Gillespie's wife, which we know better. By the way you and I share Thomas Gillespie and Alexander DuMars ancestors. I would very much like to fill in more of your line although I have gathered alot because of your grandfather's unfortunate demise. Thomas Benton Gillespie was my line. I hope we can exchange information. I have a large file on the DuMars and Gillespie's. I thought I had sent Mary Ellen copies of the documents and photos of the grave. Please get in touch with me! Liz

Liz, since we last corresponded several years ago, have you ever found a will or probate pack for Thomas Gillespie b ca 1775 & died 21 Feb 1853? I still have no proof that he had a son John D. Gillespie b 1804 who m Margaret (possibly Bean?). This John D. is buried near his daughter Hannah (Gillespie) McMahon near Butler Co. IA. His tombstone says born Co Cavan, Ire. We almost got to Mercer Co in Sept as we were going to drive to Philadelphia. But then hubby Jack's knee went out so we flew. What a bummer. Really want to scour the courthouse records there. I have every reason to believe that you are looking for William Webst er and Roxie Ann Hill from Connecticutt. They were the parents of John Webster who married Sarah Maitland in Venango Co ., Pa. John and Sarah moved to Hickory Twp. before 1850. They had William, Roxieann, Armilla (by census), Andrew, Miranda, Sylvester, and James Lochester (twins). Your Sylvester and Sarah had a son John, born about 1871 in Mercer Co. His siblings are listed as Frank, Maude, Blanch, and George by 1880. I am looking at the Maitland line from Venango Co. Sarah was the daughter of Andrew Maitland and Margaret Cameron. Andrew's second wife was Rachel Henry, my ggggrandfather's sister. Rachel was married at least twice before she married Andrew Maitland, first to William Elliott, then to Edward Fowles. She had daughters by both men, but no children known by Andrew. She probably raised his younger children. If this is who you are looking for let me know. Lynn Johnson Beauty, Ky.

    3. I have an ancestor from Kilsyth, Scotland who died in 1874 in Hickory Township, Mercer County. His name was William Hardie. He died young at age 35, which makes me wonder if he might have died in a mining accident. I am looking for any references that cover mining accidents in 1874. Is that too far back? I have never been able to find his burial place. The family appear in the 1870 census in Hickory Township, but I believe they may have lived in West Middlesex, Mercer Co in 1874. I know that Hickory was changed to Hermitage. What was West Middlesex changed to? Thank you! 3. ----- Original Message ----- From: Robert Jerin To: sanchoinc@houston.rr.com Sent: Thursday, September 30, 2004 9:59 PM Subject: E. European Roots Seminar Sts Peter and Paul Youngstown Just wanted to let everyone in the area know about the seminar that I will be conducting at Sts Peter and Paul in Youngstown in Nov. Many Croats, Serbs and other E Europeans settled in the Mercer County area, so this seminar will be of interest to anyone with those roots. Details as follows: Croatia Genealogy Seminar Have you ever wondered about your Croatian roots? Why did your family leave Croatia? Why did they choose to come to America? How did they live in Stari Kraj? Who were their parents and grandparents? Did they have any brothers or sisters? Are their any relatives in Europe? Was your name changed at Ellis Island? These are the kinds of topics we will be discussing in the genealogy seminar and showing you how to go about getting answers to the questions above. Regardless of ethnicity if your family came from Croatia or nearby areas you won't want to miss this seminar. These seminars are always informative and fun, with everyone going away with new information about their Croatian genealogy and how to find their personal family information. Some even go away with specific information about their family! Our next seminar is planned for Saturday, Nov 13th 2003, from 8:30 AM to 4: 00 PM. We will be covering the following topics. History of Croatia and origins of Croatians How our ancestors lived in the "old country" Croatian immigration to America and the journey to America, How to get started with your family tree The dos and don'ts of genealogy Translating Croatian records How to locate records such as birth records, marriage records, death records, census records in the US and in Croatia How to read old records Translation of given names (with Croatian, English, Italian and Latin), Meaning Meaning of surnames and categories of surnames Figuring Family relationships During the seminar we'll actually try to find some information about the ancestors of someone who is at the seminar! Included in the seminar is a copy of my Croatian genealogy handbook for you to take with you. Refreshments and a light lunch will be served. Seating is limited and registration is required. For more information or to register please call Robert Jerin at 216-991-2310 or email me at rjerin26@yahoo.com The seminar will be held at St Peter and Paul (Croatian) Roman Catholic Church in Youngstown Robert Jerin Croatian Heritage Museum Cleveland Ohio

We don't know anything more about this lost relation; does anyone know of a newspaper account of the accident? We don't think that they had children; we don't know where David Stewart was from, but we think probably Antrim also. They were farming. It would be very interesting to find out more about their lives and deaths; I'll hope to hear from someone who can help fill in some of this for the family in Ireland
