From my understanding of zone improvement program system (i.e., ZIP codes) is that it was set up in a region primarily by hubs and by alphabet with some extra space built in for new post offices. That is why the McKeesport (a local) hub was delegated the numbers 15130-15135 (as noted by others, some of these were delegated to specific areas - White Oak, et al). The next number is 15136 which is McKees Rocks -- next alphabetically. North Versailles -- certainly not next alphabetically, but created as a separate post office in 1967 -- 4 or 5 years after the creation of the zip - took an empty zipcode of 15137. Prior to that time, NVT residents either had 15131, 15132, 15037 (East McKeesport), Wilmerding or East Pittsburgh addresses depending on what ward of the township they lived in. This is why Donna Jean Young -- who never lived physically in East McKeesport but rather on Broadway Extension in North Versailles so identified with East McKeesport. Anyone here remember her shtick on TV and records in the late 60s?
