I was a grad student at the time, yet they would not let me purchase a student membership which was somewhat cheaper in price. I felt this was rather large sum to enact from someone who only did three hours worth of research (they did not do any of the research for me). While I think membership in this organization is worthwhile and had previously been a member, I felt that this charge and a requirement of membership was a little unfair. I have researched at various archives, libraries, historical societies in seven states since 1977 and have never been charged for permission to do my own research before or since. I have been charged for copies and this is to be expected and I have paid others to do it for me at times when I was not able make it to a particular location and this to me was acceptable.
