Old St. Josephs is the original Catholic cemetery in McKeesport. It adjoined Fairview. Both cemeteries were altered when the city put Coursin St right down the middile between them. Because they were so small two more cemeteries were eventually opened: McKeesport-Versailles Cemetery, and New St Josephs out on Route 30. This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------4E74FF77C44CCCA8E9E52AAF Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit My father's half-brother was buried in St. Joseph's in 1895 -- so it is at least that old and probably as old as the 1870s or older. Fairview is much older. I noticed an earlier posting by the Coyan family. I did some research on the Coyan graves a few years ago and they go back to the 1840s which predates McKeesport-Versailles by a decade; the Coyan graves were moved from Fairview to McK-Ver. in the 1890s. The dividing line between the Fairview & St. Joseph's cemeteries is not Coursin Street, as St. Joseph's is bisected by Coursin and lies on both sides of the road. The division between Fairview and the southern section of St. Joseph's is not readily apparent during this time of the year, however, you can tell in Summer. Fairview is mowed on a regular basis while St. Joseph's is not. It is the southern section of St. Joseph's which has been referred to as the overgrown cemetery. I have the understanding that St. Joseph's was replaced by the New St. Joseph's Cemetery (next to Grandview on Rt. 30) in East McKeesport/North Versailles. I'm not sure where I read this, but if it is true, New St. Joseph's may have some records. As far as Fairview's caretaker, his records only consist of what is written on the stones and he does not have complete burial files at the location (as they do at McKeesport-Versailles and other cemeteries in the area). I remember as a kid, my step-father (born 1904) told me stories about the widening (and probably the bricking) of Coursin Street. Because the wider street cut into cemetery property, some graves had to be relocated and reinterred. During the time of construction and relocation, a heavy rainstorm hit the area. The storm caused several recently exhumed coffins to float down Coursin Street. I'm not sure when this happened, but I always thought that it was before 1920. Jim Owston -- James M. Dear James, The New St. Joseph's Cemetery does not have records for the Old St. Joseph's Cemetery but if you do ever need anything from New St. Joseph's the staff there is very nice to you. I might add that the earliest cemetery in McKeesport appears to be the Old Ninth St. Cemetery. All those graves were re-interred when the street was widened etc. That graveyard was so full no more burials could be entered & that's why McKeesport/Versailles Cem. came in to being. All, or most of, the graves were re-interred to McK/Vers. Cem. Regards, Ellen (ETHS)
