    1. [PAMCKEESPORT] Genealogy Scams
    2. Posted in another mailing list: Genealogy Scams A few years ago I wrote a number of articles about the infamous Halberts of Bath, Ohio. This company would send an advertisement for a book that claimed to be a "history of your family name." After paying about $40, the hapless purchaser received a cheaply- made paperback containing a bit of generic "how to get start tracing your family tree information" accompanied by listings from telephone books. Sadly, similar information was available online at no cost. In August 1998 I even visited the address in Bath, Ohio that Halberts used, and I wrote about my trip in that week's edition of this newsletter. I found no company named Halberts at that address. In fact, the address was simply a mail drop. All orders sent to that address in Bath, Ohio were actually forwarded to the parent company in nearby Akron. About a year after my on-site visit, Halberts folded up. They gave layoff notices to all of their employees, sold the office furniture, and ceased operations. The company blamed "competition from the Internet" for their business failure. In my opinion, the competition was twofold: (1.) the same information was available online at no charge, and (2.) the Internet provides a great place for tracking such scams. Those who received the advertisements could easily go online to check Halberts' reputation. All you had to do was to go to any search engine and enter the word "Halberts" to learn of the experiences of others. In fact, you can still do that today. Of course, Halberts was not the only company with questionable business practices in this arena. Some of us still remember Beatrice Bailey. This lady sold products that were somewhat similar to those of Halberts. In her advertisement sent by mail to me, she would sign her name as "Beatrice Eastman Bailey." In a letter sent to someone named Smith, she would sign her name as "Beatrice Smith Bailey" and in an advertisement sent to someone named Williams she would sign as "Beatrice Williams Bailey." Beatrice Bailey apparently was a one-person operation. She was under investigation by postal authorities when she died. Other companies have continued to sell "products" that claim to contain genealogy value but, in fact, have little genealogy information in them. The brave new world of the Internet has been a haven for honest entrepreneurs and dishonest scam artists alike. New scams have arisen and established scam artists have expanded into online operations. As always, spending money is a case of Caveat Emptor - "Let the buyer beware!" There are several Web sites that track companies that sell questionable genealogy products and services. If you have any questions about an advertisement you received, either in regular mail or in e-mail, I would suggest that you check the following: Genealogy scams in general:     Genealogical Web Site Watchdog (only for online scams) at:     http://www.ancestordetective.com/watchdog.htm Blessings, George Jenkins

    1. [PAMCKEESPORT] Sayles family help!
    2. Dear George, I believe in looking through your website (that I enjoy very much) that you come from an African American family in McKeesport. Since this community was a very close one in McKeesport, I was wondering if you could help me locate anyone from the Sales family. LaGania (they called her Ellen) worked for us and we knew the whole family. Her niece, Janet Crawford, was one of my best friends in school. I ran into her once many years ago and coincidentally, we had both ended up in Cleveland. I lost touch and have no address or do not know her husband's name. Do you have any connection to that family that might help me locate Janet? She had a sister Bonnie. Melvin Sales was also a cousin. They lived on Jenny Lind. Thank you so much. jwolf@xcelnet.net Can someone in McKeesport be so kind as to send Judy any info on any Sayles family in McKeesport. I know that there are a bunch of Sayles in McKeesport. Thanks Porters, George Jenkins

I don't believe there ever was a St. Joseph's CHURCH in McKeesport [there was St. Mary's German RC Church and there was St. Peter's]. St Peter's RC church is the one that used the Old St. Joseph Cemetery ---w hich still exists [unused] and many of the stones have disappeared as havet he records for those buried there! 2. Sharon Guerra
    3. Hi. I want to thank everyone who replied to my initial query! I have some leads now. To clarify my confusion - we'd been told that a family member had been buried at "St. Joseph's" cemetary in 1911 - but the grave was no longer around because the land had been sold to Duquesne Light company. The workers at St. Joe's cemetary in Duquesne never heard of such a story. I always assumed the cemetary in question was the one in Duquesne (really West Mifflin) because other related family were buried there. Also, the death certificate specifically lists St. Joseph's, Duquesne, but it was filled out non-family members who may have been mistaken. Another clue lies in the fact that even those buried at St. Joe's in Duquesne were actually married by Father Kovach in McKeesport back in 1914. The man who was buried in 1911 was also married in 1910 by Father Kovach. This indicates to me that the family might have been members of a McKeesport parish at that time, and the cemetary used might have been the St. Joesph's in McKeesport not in Duquesne. I will try the leads provided by all you helpful people and will report back any useful findings! 2. I dont recall a St Josephs Church in McKeesport either..There were numerous Catholic Churches in the city,Among them are Holy Trinity, St Peters, St Mary`s German, St Mary`s Polish, Sacred Heart, St Pius, St Perpetua and probably many more. An old city directory might yield more names . --Donna

    2. Sharon Guerra
    3. Hi. I have several marriage records from 1910-1914 which list a Father Kovach, a Roman-Catholic priest from McKeesport, as the celebrant of the marriage. However, no church is named. Does anyone know if he might have been with St. Joseph's church in McKeesport? Also, I remember reading on this list about an old St. Joesph's cemetary and a new one. Does that mean the "old" cemetary was moved to a new location? And if so, what is the original land being used for now? 1. [PAMCKEESPORT] McKeesport Tax List
    2. Greetings, Just posted an updated McKeesport Tax List. The file size is about 1.2 megs, so please be patient while it loads. Once it is completed I will find a way to cut the loading time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------- A man was sick & tired of going to work everyday while his wife stayed at home.  He wanted his wife to see what he went through so he prayed "Dear Lord, I go to work every day and put in 8 hours while my wife merely stays at home.  I want her to know what I go through, so please create a trade in our bodies". God in his infinite wisdom, granted the man's wish. The next morning, sure enough, the man awoke as a woman. He arose, cooked breakfast for his mate, awakened the children, set out their school clothes, fed them breakfast, packed their lunches, drove them to school, came home & picked up the dry cleaning, took it to the cleaners & stopped at the bank, withdrew money from the bank to pay the power bill and telephone bill, went to the grocery store, came home and put away the groceries.  He cleaned the cat's litter box and bathed the dog.    Then it was already 1PM  He hurried to make the beds, do the laundry, vaccuum, dust, and swept and mopped the kitchen floor.  Ran to the school to pick up the children and got into an argument with them on the way home.  Set out cookies and milk, got the kids organized to do their homeowrk, then set up the ironing board and watched TV while he did the ironing.  At 4:30PM he began peeling potatoes and washing greens for the salad, breaded the pork chops, snapped fresh beans for supper.  After supper cleaned the kitchen, ran the dishwasher, folded laundry, bathed the children, and put them to bed. At 9PM - he was already exhausted, though his daily chores weren't finished, he went to bed where he was expected to make love to his mate, which he managed to get through without a complaint. The next morning, he awoke and immediately knelt by the bed & said "Lord, I don't know what I was thinking, I was so wrong to envy my wife's being able to stay home all day.  Please Lord, let us trade back". The Lord, in his infinite wisdom, replied "My son, I feel you have learned your lesson & I will be happy to the way they were.  The Lord also said, "You'll have to wait 9 months, because you became pregnant last night". *** Men - have it made and don't even know it! *** George
