Until it burned, McKeesport High School always held there after prom party at the Vogue Terrece. -Donna

Subj: Re: [PAMCKEESPORT] Help Needed on site Date: 3/26/2001 2:21:24 PM Eastern Standard Time From: mjo26@webtv.net (jodi) To: GeoJenk@aol.com Is the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co still where it was and just how far from McKeesport is it? ----------------------------- You 'Porters are great. I have recieved some stuff on East McKeesport. I should have it done & on my site later this afternoon. Thanks to the contributers, I can now start a section on East McKeesport!!!!! The menu item will appear on my main page when completed. Thanks to the Mailing Listers the web site continues to grow and I am getting more E-Mailers saying that they totally enjoy reading this newsletter and viewing the info appearing on the site. Again a sincere thanks to one & all. I now have more respect for E. McKeesport as a result. You E. McKeesporters have risen to the challenge to defend your worth. I think it was actually located in North Versailles Twp. on Crooked Run Road. At one time it was either owned or operated by a family named Hamilton I think. They had 2 daughters that attended Sunset School. Shirley
Just wondering if anyone on the list is researching or related to the LUDWICK family. I am looking for descendants of Alice George LUDWICK, b.1906, d.1994, who married Robert J CANT, b.1896, d.1976. I am researching the CANT family from Angus, Scotland, and am happy to swop information relating to the CANT family connection. Thank you. Wendy Bloy South Africa
The Ludwick's occupied the farm next to the one my father grew up on. He knew them well. In fact they signed my Great Grandmother's condolence book - I'll see if there are any Cants on that list as well. My Dad talked of a George Ludwick - was that Alice's father? Known as nice, upstanding neighbors always ready to lend a hand. Marc M. G. Stauffer
The Hubbard Mine - We got all our coal from the Hubbard Mine - on I believe the famous Pittsburgh Coal Seam. My Great-Grandfather whose obituary is on George's Web Site - shipped coal from the Hubbard in the 1830's and 1840's. I believe its other outlet that they worked was located where the White Oak Athletic Field is now located. I remember the Air Pump and mine shaft still standing well into the 1960's. Unfortunately I have no pictures of the Hubbard Mine - for those who never saw it - the Mercury Dealership sits on the site across from K-Mart on the Walnut St. extension. A regular coal delivery man for the Hubbard was Walker Taylor of White Oak. Marc M. G. Stauffer
Greetings, You folks really did it to me on this issue. When the Vogue Terrace was mentioned as the "unknown dance hall". I readily jumped on it as the place where I went for my Senior Prom in 1961. Now that Marc jogged my memory about the Twin Coaches, I have no idea which one I went to for my Senior Prom. I am sitting here confused. babbling duhhhh!!!!! lol Helppppppppppp!!!! The problem is that I went to my Senior Prom reluctantly (my mother & father threatened to kill me if I didn't go) with a "blind date" ... had a picture taken but destroyed it. My "Blind Date" was set up by a friend after my picked lady became a no show. My Senior Prom and the following picnic at Renzie Park was a disaster!!!!!! roflmao Thanks for unsuppressing a surpressed memory. lololol George
Greetings, I have a few problems with my Web Site that I need some help with. 1. Does the tax list load completely. I know I need to break the page size down into smaller tidbits, which I will start on today. 2. Does anyone know what I can add to my PC that will let me view my site as a Mac user would see it. 3. Are there any Mac Users having any problems viewing the sit? 4. Are there any other users having any viewing problems? If there are any problems, please let me know so that I can research how to fix them. Thank you for your help. In fact I am looking for any suggestions for changes. (don't spam me) lmao Blessings, George "In the problem fixing..tweaking mode" Jenkins
The Vogue Terrace existed into the early 1960's. I know that the McKeesport Class of 1959 had their Prom there. I believe the performer was Shirley Jones. It was a BIG - OLD FASHIONED - night club. Name entertainers of the day. It was located on a road that connects Foster Road with Route 148 - the name escapes me. It burned in a rather spectacular fire between 1960 - 1964? Check the Daily News Achieves - they carried a story of its history when it burned. It's largest competitor was the "Twin Coaches" which used to sit on Route 51 - just beyond where Route 51 connects with I-70. If headed for Uniontown, it was on the North Bound Side on the piece of land adjacent to the railroad bridge. McKeesporter's born 1941 or before should have more details and info than I do. Marc M. Hi Everyone, Could the unnamed Dance "thingy" be the Vogue Terrace? My grandparents went there alot to dance. I don't know if that was in McKeesport or E. McKeesport. I just remember Grandma talking about dancing there. There is also a photo of her and my Grandfather taken there. It had to be the late 30's, early 40's. It is in a cardboard holder marked Vogue Terrace, but no address on it. I can remember the firemen's parades too. We used to sit on my Grandma's front porch steps on Broadway to watch them. Greetings, The responses that I am getting regarding East McKeesport are excellent. By the end of the week I am going to put in the newsletter the "Reasons Why I Shudda Went to E. McKeesport". I love this!!!. I hafta admit that I am learning something from the response I am getting. Uz guyz are good and always up to a challenge. Since I am in this mode let me ask this question.... If I get a picture of Irene's Pizza....the "Unnamed" dance thingy....da bus stop.... Eckert's Drug Store.... Reenie's Restaurant then I will have all the major sites in E. McKeesport? Da proof is in some pictures.... All kidding aside.... I think I remember E. McKeesport as being a place that mainly had housing. Not many other kinda places as it was so close to McKeesport proper and it was easy then to come into McKeesport to do things. Is my assessment pretty correct. Also I can't think of any Afro-Americans that resided in E. McKeesport. The time frame for me was 1944 - 1965 that I lived in McKeesport. Does anyone remember or know of the number of Afro-American families that resided in E. McKeesport.? It is a shame how little I know about E. McKeesport. :( Blessings, George "Don't know nuthin' but learnin' bout E McKee" Jenkins :))
George: In the 40's and 50's, if you traveled by Greyhound bus to Harrisburg, Philadelphia or all points east, East McKeesport was a very important place because the eastbound bus took Lincoln Highway/Route 30 to the Turnpike and stopped where the boulevard (the extension of Fifth Avenue/Lyle Boulevard) met Route 30. Many's the cold day/night I stood on that corner to go to Philly or points east when I was going to MHS and PSU. East McK. had great firemen's' parades (the Tiger Band always marched) in the summer and great dances (don't remember the name of the dance hall but it was a big sucker!). I doubt that beyond going through EMcK to get to someplace else via Route 30 into PGH or points east, EMcK was pretty much a nonentity. Jim Parmiter MHS '52 PSU '56
Greetings, Out of curiosity, are there any subscribers to the mailing list from E. McKeesport? I am curious cuz I have recieved some E-Mail from people regarding E. McKeesport. I am going to expand the coverage of the PAMCKEESPORT mailing list to include the E. McKeesport area. When I was asked about E. McKeesport it made me realize that I knew nothing about E. McKeesport nor do I ever remember having a reason to go there in all my growing up years. Ahemmm... in order to get up to speed and not trying to start a turf war. lol What was in E. McKeesport that would attract a McKeesporter? Does anybody have any pics of E. McKeesport? So please bring me up to speed "E'Porters" :) Also..... does anybody have any pics showing Greenblats and the 5th Ave. School. If any E'Porters are interested I wouldn't mind setting space aside for that area. Heck even I can spare 5 K's of space. (Me slapping myself) saying ...bad host!!!! Sorry East McKeesporters...I couldn't contain myself!!!! :)))) Blessings all & thanks again for all your contributions and putting up with me. George "Never went to E. McKeesport" Jenkins (smile)

Greetings "Porters", Just recieved a bunch of pictures from Johnny Mayer. They were taken in June 1999. They are of excellent quality as always. They are now on the web site: http://www.geocities.com/geojenk/ I would like to thank Johnny for all his contributions to the site with his great pictures!! I know that the "Porters" that are not in McKeesport appreciate the "Home Visit" via Internet..... Oh yea..... does anyone have an MP3 of the Tiger's Marching Band playing "Hold Them Tigers"? I would love to have a copy, since I have learned how to process and add sound to the sight. Again thanks to all you "Porters" for subscribing....contributing.....helping others with info. I am finally making the trip to the Port in mid-July..my family is having a reunion at Renzie and Bethlehem Baptist Church.... for a weekend.... Yeahhhhh!!! My only problem is how I get enough time to sneak away & get hunkered down in the Library and wearing out their copy machine and also getting to the Historic joint and Family reunion inna weekend... lolol Be bountifully Blessed, George "Headin' to da Port in July" Jenkins
Dear McKeesporters, I have written a history of Hubbard Mine which was located across from Olympia Shopping Center on Walnut St. I need pictures and thoughts about the mine for further history. Hi List Trying to remember where Duffy's Tavern and Moran Field were located. I think Duffy's was at Market & 14th. Moran Field was where Harrison Village was. Tom Maher
