1. Re: [PAMCKEESPORT] Where is "City Farm Station, PA"?
2. Jim Parmiter
3. I recognize the railroad as the "P-Mickey" or the Pittsburgh, McKeesport & Youghiogheny RR, which ran along our backyard when I lived in Greenock in northern Elizabeth Township along the Yough' River. It followed the south shore of the Yough, but I don't know where it crossed the river on a bridge, since there were a number of railroad bridges around McKeesport that could have been used. ". . . the Braddock end of the . . . railroad . . ." could refer to the old Braddock Road, which eventually became PA State Route 48, which crosses the Yough at Boston in Elizabeth Township. On the other hand, it could refer to the town or township of Braddock at the other end of the road. I don't know if the P-Mickey ran through Braddock or not. Jim Parmiter

1. [PAMCKEESPORT] Buddy Metzler-McKeesport Class of 1943 or 44
2. Teresa Geiger
3. Hi Everyone, In my earlier message, I said that Louis "Buddy" Metzler graduated from McKeesport High School in 1948. I was looking at the wrong person's notes. He graduated either 1943 or quit school in 1944. He enlisted April 12 1944 and was a Private in the 417th Infantry Company C. He was killed Feb 7 1945. Thanks to everyone who has already replied and give me some wonderful ideas of where I might find information on Uncle Buddy. Thanks, Teresa mariakhristina@juno.com ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less! 1. [PAMCKEESPORT] Where is "City Farm Station, PA"?
2. Does anybody have any idea where City Farm Station, PA, is located? I just received the Death Certificate for the brother of my gr-grandfather, and the above place of birth is listed. As far as I know, the family lived in Versailles Twp at the time of James Harrison's birth on May 21, 1819. He died in McKeesport, and I do have his obituary from the Daily News Newspaper there in 1887, which says that he was born "at a spot near the Braddock end of the Pittsburgh, McKeesport and Youghiogheny railroad bridge". Does this information jibe with what is on the death certificate? I have been searching for ANYTHING that would tie James and my gr-grandfather, George, to their parents. Perhaps if I knew where this place was located I could search in that area further. The only evidence that I have so far I found on the Historical Pittsburgh site in Vol. 3 of the Genealogical and personal history of western Pennsylvania, by John W. Jordan on p. 1350 where there is a very short paragraph about William Henry Harrison, grandfather of Richey C. Harrison (this is my grandfather). Two things here are important: He lived in Port Perry (no longer exists but was perhaps in the spot mentioned as James' birth place?), and "among his children was George" (my gr-grandfather). I also find Wm. Henry's widow, Elizabeth, living with first James (in 1850) and then with George (in 1860). I am sure it is the same person as she gains 10 years and is noted as being deaf in both census records! So this ties James and George together. I would appreciate any insight that anyone can shed on the above facts that I have. Unfortunately, George's death certificate is not to be had from the City-County Building - he died in Sept. of 1905, so sending to New Castle would not help, as their certificates start in 1906. Any and all help would be appreciated! Nancy in DE mailto:pianoteacher3ng@aol.com

1. [PAMCKEESPORT] Louis "Buddy" Metzler 1926-1945
2. Teresa Geiger
3. Hi Everyone, I'm trying to find anyone who knew my great-uncle Buddy Metzler. (real name was Louis Eugene Metzler) He was born in McKeesport Jan 29 1926. He went to McKeesport High School and would have graduated in 1948. He joined the Army during WWII and was killed in Luxembourg (we think) on Feb 7 1945. He was the son of Louis Metzler and Bessie Wisser. I have his graduation picture that I can send to anyone who thinks they may know him. Unfortunately all of his brothers and sisters have passed away and there is no one who really remembers him very well. I have tried to get his military records but there was a fire in the building in St. Louis that has those records and his were destroyed. We found an obituary for him, but it doesn't say much. I would appreciate any little bit of information that anyone may have on him or the Metzler family. Thank you, Teresa mariakhristina@juno.com ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less! 1. [PAMCKEESPORT] Re: Dr. Thelma Dulany
2. Jim Parmiter
3. Be advised that on the afternoon of Thursday, April 5, 1934, Dr. Thelma Dulaney, assisted by Mrs. Katharine "Aunt Katie" Kellerman Ulm, delivered a baby boy to Mrs. Ruth Ulm Parmiter in the front bedroom of the green shingled house at 1219 Ohio Avenue, Versailles Township, Allegheny County PA. It was a breech birth and the cord was wrapped around the baby's neck. When delivered, the baby was "blue" and was revived by Dr. Dulaney. He grew up to be almost normal, nut everything that was wrong with the child was blamed forevermore by his father James H. "Buster" Parmiter on Dr. Dulaney.. Dr. Dulaney always denied any responsibility for the final product. I was that baby. Aunt Katie was my grandmother.

1. [PAMCKEESPORT] Pic & info additions to site
2. Greetings, Just finished adding some more pictures to the "New" old picture area and New info to the E. McKeesport Section. As always, I add text info to any pictures I have as I receive it. So please feel free to send me material related to any pic that is on the site. Even though it may seem trivial, it has a cumulative effect that amounts to a lot of info about a subject. I invite everyone to add their two-cents to everything you see on the web site. Blessings, George Jenkins

1. [PAMCKEESPORT] Marc Stauffer's Post- Stewartsville Hollow Road
2. Greetings All.... Hi Marc, Thanks immensly for your posts. Your most recent post regarding the Acie family got me excited as the Acie's are cousins of mine. I remember staying out in Stewartsville Hollow as a kid many times. The info you gave is totally new to me, as I have lost contact with that branch of my family. My cousins were named Ronald and Jamie Acie. Here are the Acie's I have (many are missing) Acie, Dorothy The Matriarch of the Acie Family Acie, Elmer Elmer being the patriarch of the Acie family Acie, June Acie, Madeline (Weenie) My Aunt who is my Acie connection married my uncle Joe Jenkins (McKeesport High School's all time great football center) Acie, Marva Acie, Zola Do you happen to have any more "stuff" on Stewartsville Hollow in your family's treasure trove? Again thanks, George

1. [PAMCKEESPORT] Re: Jack's Run School
2. Marc Stauffer
3. Dear George: The picture of Jack's Run School should be in the new photos of McKeesport. It was a Versailles Twp now White Oak, now McKeesport Schools. Many older folks from White Oak and those who moved to McKeesport may have attended this one room school. It was the school of: Borlands - where Fort Reburn stands T. C. Jones Oliver Evans McClures Taylors Hoffmans Ludwick's Krebs Beech Heckman's Stadterman(s) Weddel(s) Dr. Thelma Dulany Versailles Township was one of the first places in Pennsylvania to have a woman as Supervising Principle. Mrs. Jessie Opperman nee Ripple of Ripple Road. She graduated from a "State Teacher's College" which was a two year program then. Aunt Jess was a Great-Aunt of mine. Students who attended Jacks Run School had regular reunions well into the 1960's. Also on the tax records- Stewartsville which is / was on Stewartsville Hollow Rd. that connects Lincoln Highway to Long Run Road was according to oral history in my family founded by Free Blacks before the Civil War. The Acie family was one of the old families in that area. They also attended Jack's Run School. My dad was a friend of Joe Acie - not sure of first name. So you might say that Jack's Run School was also one of the first integrated schools in our area. If the tax rolls say St..... or similar in Versailles Twp. then it is most likely Stewartsville. Finally a question of my own. Does anyone or in the McKeesport Achieves have any information on the Shaker Community that existed across Rt. 48 from the Temple of Hope / Hoffman's Green House, and was later known as Moss's Farm. Another odd fact - how about information about McKeesport Electing a Socialist Mayor in 1917? Who was he? What was his record? In those days when the mayor was a Republican for years and years even during FDR's administration - George Lyle - why the jump to a Socialist for one term? Marc M. G. Stauffer

1. [PAMCKEESPORT] Keeper Stallions
2. Marc Stauffer
3. Dear George: A little history first and then the modern application. A "Keeper Stallion" was a stallion the owner could make money off of by charging a stud fee. The Stallion may have been know as a good worker for pulling freight wagons - heavy freight like coal, picking up milk from farms - Menzie Dairy Clydesdales or Belgium Percherons or perhaps a good trotter for a fast buggy. The men in those days who drove these wagons and the ones who drove stage coaches, like those you see in the old western films were called Teamsters - as are Truck Drivers today. When horses were phased out for internal combustion trucks etc. the Teamsters retrained themselves from horses to the mechanical. Horse traders, farmers who raised horses for a variety of reasons, or ran the livery stable where you usually could order or buy the type of wagon, buggy, buckboard, get your horse shoed or wagon springs reforged turned to cars. The general mistrust of Car Dealers is descended directly from the Horse Traders. The saying "Never look a gift horse in the mouth" was because the horses teeth would reveal the true age of the animal by the amount of wear on the teeth. The less wear the younger the animal. It then evolved into kicking the tires, insisting that you look under the hood. A crooked horse trader/car salesman might have the engine steam cleaned so that it look better cared for - no or little grease or grime. Horse traders would sometimes use Milk Paint to cover gray around a horses mussel, braid more hair into the tail to make it look younger - cosmetics isn't modern. There you have it. Keeper stallion = breeding = income. Marc M. G. Stauffer

3. If the list of people attending a particular funeral are of interest - I realize the names may not mean anything to anyone. However I have several other funeral lists ranging from circa 1900 through 1995. I'll be glad to list the info on the person who died and the list of those who paid respects. My family never threw anything away. They also kept the memorial cards for services they went to. I'll slowly try to pull them together in some logical way. Most of these people who be old McKeesport, Versailles Township settlers- some of the families going back to Pre Revolutionary Times. Please let me know if this serves a purpose other than curiosity for others on the list. Marc M. G. Stauffer
