    1. [PAMCKEESPORT] Where is French St ?
    2. Teresa Geiger
    3. Hi Everyone, I'm looking for the location of French Street in the McKeesport or White Oak areas. I haven't been able to locate it on any map. My Metzler family lived at 1025 French Street until sometime after 1948. (Louis E. Metzler was killed in WWII in 1945 but not buried in PA until 1948. 1948 obituary from the Daily News lists his mother Bessie Wisser Metzler living at 1025 French St.) I was told that some of the street names were changed after WWII. 1. [PAMCKEESPORT] old st. joseph's cemetary
    2. Sharon Guerra
    3. Hi, St. Joseph's Church 817 West Grant Avenue Duquesne, PA 15110 412-466-1304 I spoke with a Cheryl Janucek. She was very helpful, found my relatives, and sent me a map. By the way, the cemetary itself sits in West Mifflin, I believe. I am still looking for another relative who's 1911 death certificate indicates that he was buried in St. Joseph's cemetary - Duquesne, yet they can find no record of him. If anyone has any information about a different St. Joseph's cemetary in Duquesne in 1911, I would appreciate any help! 2. Barbara Jo Firda
    3. A "Hard" Virus to Deal With A new virus utilizing extraordinary social engineering has the potential to spread rapidly. The virus, VBS.Hard.a (dubbed Hard after the virus's creator), is masquerading as a virus alert from anti-virus software vendor, Symantec. The virus attachment poses as a link to a page on the Symantec web site about a nonexistent virus threat. The supposed "link" ends with the notorious vbs extension. For more information about the virus, including detailed characteristics, visit our special Anti-Virus page at InsiderRadio.com: http://www.insiderradio.com/internetinsider/iishows/virusindex.html

    3. In the early 1900's, there was a semi-pro team that played on a field in Christy Park/the Eleventh Ward. It was located somewhere around 26th Street on the river side of the railroad tracks and south of old Fort Pitt Steel Casting, where their scrap yard was during the war. My grandfather, Owen Kyle Parmiter, was a regular member of the team. They supported themselves by passing the hat. I don't know the name of the team, but I'm sure it received good coverage in the Daily News. Jim Parmiter

    1. [PAMCKEESPORT] McKeesport Picture Album
    2. Greetings Listers, I have been reading PAMCKEESPORT mailing list with much interest. I am enjoying the posts very much. You Porters are using the mailing list as I had planned & hoped for it to be used. I am saving the posts as I plan on using some to add a personal touch to my web site. :)) So I thank all of you for all the enlightening info & hope that the posts continue. I have been going through all the pics on my site & have compressed all of them in order to get faster loading times. While looking through the pics I was able to select 460 of them that are my best pics. I have been considering making them into a print book &/or an E-Book. If you think you might be interested in either type please send me an E-Mail at GeoJenk@aol.com. If there seems to be any interest in a book, I will start making them. Also if you have any pictures that you would like to add to the collection, please feel free to send them to me. When I get a sample book done I will post a notice here and put a pic of the book on my web site. Again thanks for all youz Porters for your support. Tadaaaa.... 2. Ellen Ballas
    3. Hi There Robert, I'll ask to be sure next week about this at our Elizabeth Twp. Hisorical Society. However, there is a form of a field there now, but may not be the same one. There used to be an earlier Boston Bridge that was further down from the one today, I seem to recall hearing. About 60 years ago the new one was built. Can check on that too as we have the info at the bldg. Regards, Ellen (ETHS) Research Dept. email: ellen@b-n-s.com Visit my web site: http://www.geocities.com/ellenj3

    3. Does anyone have information of the history of professional baseball in the McKeesport area? I recently learned the following: Hall of Famer Cy Young, while playing for Canton, Ohio, pitched I believe his last no hitter aqgainst the McKeesport team of the TriState league on July 25, 1890! He struck out 18 batters! This seems to have gone unnoticed today. The field was known as the "Little Boston" field near the bridge. I am told the field is long gone and not even a plaque is posted to commerate this feat! 1. [PAMCKEESPORT] YMCA
    2. I learned to swim there nearly 50 yrs ago. Not long ago I had knee surgury and needed to use a pool several times a week so I went to the Y. I was amazed, the pool has not changed one bit.It still has the original small size tile lining as it did way back when. and the same tiles are on the built in bench areas surrounding the pool .Only thing missing is the diving board. And they changed the dressing rooms ,what was the girls is now the mens , It was like walking thru a time warp when i went there. Even the same old iron gate at the top of the stairs and the same front desk are still there . Donna

    3. Marc, here's my vote to keep the history coming. I love it. I remember the Finkel's Market that Donna mentioned. It was right across the street from Centennial School, which I attended in the 1st grade before moving to little Boston. Our family also had a tab there. Very nice people, the Finkels. As far as Winkys, the only one I remember was on Walnut Street right at the end of Long Run Road. Marc, what year did you work the Midway at Rainbow Gardens? I ran the Ferris Wheel in 1956, so you can chalk me up as a former Rainbow employee. I well remember Dr. Mason, Tom Arthur and Edmund Kittiko (with his jungle helmet firmly planted on his head). The boss of the rides in 1956 was Harry Snyder. His daughter, Janice, also worked at the park. Joe Volpe had an office above the snack bar, with a window at the back overlooking the Ferris Wheel. He wasn't in the office much, but when he was I always minded my P's & Q's, knowing without turning his head he was looking directly at the Ferris Wheel when he looked out that window. Speaking of life guards, I got my Red Cross lifesaving certification at the McKeesport YMCA. The instructor was Fred Preuss, who also was the Physical Director of the Y. To pass the test, we had to "save" him and he didn't make that too easy. As I remember, he was a strong, burly guy and definitely played the part well of a desperate drowning person. Does anyone remember him? Ralph Hoffman

    2. Marc Stauffer
    3. Dear Friends: This is a suggestion. I've started to keep an archive of all the messages dealing with the McKeesport Area, different cemeteries, businesses etc. I have it organized like an archive under different headings. Then I add my own notes as to what I did that day etc. Can make for good reference for yourself instead of notes on the refrigerator. Can also be then organized as a present down the line for those Great Grandchildren. Also add pictures that might be sent that are of importance to you or your family - I call it "Instant Family Biography". Marc M. G. Stauffer

    3. Dear Jim: WOW! I knew Richard (Dick) Rubenstein well. His store was downstairs from his father's store. My Aunt - Ida Miller Morrison left Samuel's Shoe Store when Dave Rubenstein decided to establish his own store. Aunt Ida was know to many, many repeat customers as Miss Miller or Ida. She had her picture in the Daily News when she had worked for Rubenstein's either 60 or 70 years and no - I'm not making a mistake in the number of years she worked. My Aunt Hope Rudolph Gelb Ripple nee Miller worked for Richard both in McKeesport and at his Eastland Mall Store. Glenn Haine's Esso Station was between the two southern gates to National Tube drop your car in the morning and pick it up after work - about three short blocks from either the entrance across from the cemetery or the middle one that was almost across from the Local 1408 Union Headquarters. Elmer Brewer followed Mr. Saylor as head photographer. The other great writer for the Daily News was Eldy Johnson the Pa. State Game Protector for our area. He wrote some great outdoor columns. Also Schrader's Sporting Goods on 5th Avenue. He carried rifles, guns, fly fishing equipment - was high end - like the original Abercrombie & Fitch. Yes, for those of you who are younger - Abercrombie & Fitch was an old English firm that outfitted safari's and the like. They carried the best outdoor equipment in the world. They WEREN'T a clothing store. Mr. Schrader sold great split bamboo fly rods and supplies for tying flies. Marc M. G. Stauffer

    1. [PAMCKEESPORT] Re: Ukranians/Ruthenians in McKeesport
    2. Hi List: Thanks to Ellis Island I have finally confirmed that my grandmother, Zofia (Sophia) Sporniak really did make it to McKeesport. Looks like she did have a brother, which nobody knew about, that might have passed away. His name was spelled Grregorz Sporniak (typo?) and he came to the US (PA??) in 1895 to 1899, and then came back in 1903 and I am assuming he stayed in McKeesport both times. The ship's manifest has his address on a Ridge St. or maybe Bridge St.?? Someday I'll get my hands on a census or church record and will figure it all out but I am wondering about the street....also if anyone has any family stories about Ukranians/Ruthenians and where they came from? There were a few people on the ship, Antwerp, that came to McKeesport in 1914 with Zofia, Lesniak and Kolbasa, to name a few. All were from Krasna. (Between 1914 - 1918 Zofia met and married my grandfather, Demko Wozniak (they lived on 5th St.), they had a son? who died and then they had my father, Paul. Zofia was dead by 1918 from influenza. Thanks, Nancy

    3. Dick Rubenstein, the son of Mr. Rubenstein, the owner and founder of the shoe stores, was one of my best friends in high school and we roomed together in Hamilton Hall our freshman year at Penn State. Dick's grandmother was desperate that young Dick "keep Kosher" while away from home. She sent him a care package every week. Dick hated the stuff and I loved it. When Dick graduated, his father gave him his own store, "Richard's" on Fifth Avenue. If you knew Saylor, you probably also knew Elmer Brewer, who just retired as the Daily News photographer. We sang together in the Greenock Methodist Church Choir until I went away to PSU. Was the Haines Gas Station the one in the gully between the two S-curves between White Oak and the Hartman Street light? Jim
