--- --- cadcant@earthlink.net --- EarthLink: It's your Internet. Does anyone know where 402 Burton Ave., McKeesport in 1911? One other question. When I first got onto the Ellis Island site, I found my grandfather, John E. Dunn. When I went back to the site, he's no longer on the list. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?? Thanks, JoAnn New Mexico
Hi Anna Jerome St is now called Lysle Blvd.It is located one block nearer the Mon River and Parralel with 5th ave. It extends the entire length of the city. In the early 1900s it was a 2 lane road but now it is a 4 lane rd. The homes were torn down to make room for the widening of the road. I believe there is one old home still there near the east end of town. . There are some old pictures of the area ,I have seen some at the McKesport Heritage Center. George may have some on his website--Not sure. Alot of the buidings were apartments on the 2&3rd floors with a store on the first floor and there were some large homes as well. McKeesport was the home of National Steel Tube Works and there were many coal mines in the area as well--so yes immigrants would have come here --there was plenty of work. ---Donna
Hi, I have just found my relatives that came to Mckeesport from the ship passenger lists at www.ellisislandrecords.com. It lists about 15 people that traveled together from a small villiage in Italy and it appears that they were all going to McKeesport to a house on Jerome Street. The year is 1913. I have searched the current maps but I cannot find Jerome Street. Another old reference I have lists that Jerome Street did exist in McKeesport and it was located near Fifth Avenue. Would someone be able to tell me about Jerome Street? Was this a common place for immigrants in the 1915 time period? Were the houses in that area large enough to handle 20+ people? Does anyone have pictures of this area? I would appreciate any information that you may have. Regards Anna

Barbara Jo: I grew up on Broadway Extension. I used to deliver papers to the Youngs -- that was their second home on the street. The house that Donna Jean grew up in was down past Elm Street. My family home is on the corner and DJY's was caddy corner to ours. I was about 4 when her parents moved up the street. When Donna Jean went to Hollywood, she got her mother a poodle that was dyed purple. I had a stuffed dog that I got for my third birthday and I begged my mother to dye it purple just like the one across the street. Do you remember Mr. Lorenz who lived next the the Youngs? Jim... My first apartment was the downstairs of the house where Donna Jean's aunt live on Broadway Ave., Ext. You are correct in how the zip code system was designed. The McKeesport Post Office still uses the 15134 for all of the Post Office Boxes. From my understanding of zone improvement program system (i.e., ZIP codes) is that it was set up in a region primarily by hubs and by alphabet with some extra space built in for new post offices. That is why the McKeesport (a local) hub was delegated the numbers 15130-15135 (as noted by others, some of these were delegated to specific areas - White Oak, et al). The next number is 15136 which is McKees Rocks -- next alphabetically. North Versailles -- certainly not next alphabetically, but created as a separate post office in 1967 -- 4 or 5 years after the creation of the zip - took an empty zipcode of 15137. Prior to that time, NVT residents either had 15131, 15132, 15037 (East McKeesport), Wilmerding or East Pittsburgh addresses depending on what ward of the township they lived in. This is why Donna Jean Young -- who never lived physically in East McKeesport but rather on Broadway Extension in North Versailles so identified with East McKeesport. Anyone here remember her shtick on TV and records in the late 60s? Dear Jim: Sadly the answer to your question of how many McKeesporter's are buried at Arlington National Cemetery is not obtainable. I just called them and was told that they don't keep any statistics on where these soldiers were born. The only address they keep is that of the next of kin who made the funeral arrangements. The Defense Department was of no help either. I was told that only if we had a specific name could they tell me if where and when a member of the Armed Services and Coast Guard was buried. As of 10:30 AM EDST there were 269,000 people buried at Arlington National Cemetery. 241,000 with grave markers and an additional 28,000 in the mausoleum for those who chose cremation. There will be 5 additional burials today making the grand total at of midnight tonight 6/1/2001 of 269,005 people buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Sorry I couldn't obtain statistics on either Pennsylvania, Allegheny Co., or McKeesport. Marc M. G. Stauffer
The ZIP 15134 is used for Post Office Boxes that are located at the McKeesport Post Office on Walnut St. 15133 is also a McKeesport designated ZIP code, that is reserved for the Liberty Boro and Port Vue areas. Marc: Your spectacular views of the capitol, monuments and Arlington Cemetery has prompted me to ask the question -- how many McKeesport Area natives are buried in Arlington? I know of one -- my first cousin Lt. Cmdr. William M. Brakeall (Billy as he was known by us) grew up in White Oak. He served 2 tours of duty in Nam as a Navy helicopter pilot was shot down once and survived. He wanted to sign up for a third tour and was told he would have to serve stateside -- where he was killed 1971 in a helicopter explosion as he was making his descent into the St. Louis area. Jim
Dear Ellen: My mother's first name was Cleona. I often wondered where my Grandmother Miller had gotten that name - I wonder if the and Mable's mother were friends from church and that's how my mother got her rather unusual name. Small world! Marc M. G. Stauffer
