Grow, 72, professor at UMass Thomas A. Grow, 72, of 24 Montague Road, college professor and author, died Sunday in Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield. He was a professor in the School of Engineering at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst for 36 years. In 1984 he was awarded the Dean's Distinguished Service Award from the School of Engineering. He also served as assistant department head and retired in 1985. He authored a teaching text called "Construction - A Guide for the Profession" published in 1975. Born in Bradford, Pa., he attended schools there, and was a 1938 graduate of Bradford High School. He received his bachelor's degree and master's degrees from the University of Connecticut and Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1947 and 1953, respectively. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and a former president of its Western Massachusetts branch. He also served on the advisory council of the New England Construction Education Program. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and served in the specialized training corps. He lived many years in Leverett, and was a member and deacon of the Leverett Congregational Church for many years. He leaves his wife, the former Geneva Davis; a son, Thomas A. Jr. of Amherst; two daughters, Donna Grow Ives of Bethany, Conn., and Julie Ann Collier of Springfield; a brother, Joseph A. Jr. of Tennessee, and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be Saturday afternoon in the church. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. McCarthy Funeral Home, Greenfield, is in charge.
