    3. Susan, You response to this query was very interesting to me especially the information about the Orphan's Court book. Besides the cemetary records does that book have information about orphans? My great grandmother left Ireland when she was 3 or 4 with an older brother and sister (no parents). Apparently they were raised in Bradford under the "sponsorship" of someone living there. Would the Orphan's Court book have info about "sponsorships"? I believe the time would be the late 1800's, however, I have very few facts related to her life. Frankly, this section of my genealogy has laid dormant, but that book has peaked my interest. That is exactly the sort of information I was looking for. I'm a legal assistant, so I'm used to going to courthouses but generally I don't ask for documents more than a week old! This is my first "courthouse genealogy" trip so I wasn't sure what to expect. I am grateful to hear that they will help out. :) Thanks, Melissa ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Susan Stahley" <rsmstahley@adelphia.net> Reply-To: PAMCKEAN-L@rootsweb.com To: PAMCKEAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PAMCKEAN] Courthouse Records Date: Sat, 3 Jul 2004 14:26:38 -0400 The courthouse is very research friendly. They will help you with what you need to get started. Also, at the Orphan's Court, they have a book with cemetery records and who is interred in them. It is under the counter, above the marriage licenses. I am not sure how much you have been in courthouses to research, but one of the tips I can give you is to ask for original records to be copied. For instance, if you find a record for probate or an estate administration in one of their books, there are additional records that can be found by asking one of the ladies to go into the basement and find the actual record. Another great tool is the land records. If you can't find anything in the Prothontary court or the Orphan's Court, the land records will help you find things if your ancestors owned land. I wish you good luck! I am coming to McKean County later this month to search for some records regarding my family, and I was hoping maybe someone would know the best way to go about it. I will be there all day July 23, a Friday, and would like to go to the courthouse. How accessible are the records there? Should I call ahead? What are the hours? Is there anything I should know before I go? > > Also, it looks like the only copies of the Kane Republican are at the Kane High School Library. Is this accessible at all during the summer? Are there any indexes to this at all, like an obituary index or anything like that? > > My family is mostly from the Kane area (especially Kanesholm). If anyone has any other suggested places to visit, I'd love to know about them. We're going to visit relatives and cemeteries on Saturday and Sunday, but we should still have some time to spare. Any help you could give me would be much appreciated!
