For about a decade, including the doctor-scarce years of World War II, she was a director of the Crittenden Home, a St. Petersburg residence for unwed mothers. Before joining the Crittenden Home, now known as the Brookwood Young Women's Residence, she was a teacher at Disston Junior High School. After the war, she taught history and served as a counselor at Mirror Lake Junior High School until it closed in the early 1960s. She was born in Bradford, Pa., and came here in 1929 from Rixford, Pa. A graduate of Rollins College, Winter Park, she received a master's degree in counseling from Hofstra University, Hempstead, N.Y. She was a past president of St. Petersburg Junior Woman's Club and the Pan-Hellenic Council and a member of the Women's Service League, Interlock, Alpha Phi Sorority and Daughters of the American Revolution. She belonged to St. Peter's Episcopal Church. Besides her daughter, survivors include her husband, Douglas P.; and two grandchildren, Halyn Lee Hughes and Frank Collins Hughes IV, both of Clearwater.
