SCOTT FARGO, PROFESSOR, EXPERT IN ENTOMOLOGY Author: ALANA BARANICK PLAIN DEALER REPORTER Dateline: TULSA, OKLAHOMA Oklahoma State University entomology Professor W. Scott Fargo, formerly of Ashtabula, wrote or contributed to more than 50 scientific publications on insect research. He was recognized in agricultural circles as an expert on ecologically controlling bugs that infest stored grain in farm and commercial elevator facilities. He advocated getting rid of insect pests through natural methods rather than exposing them - and the grain - to chemical pesticides. Mr. Fargo, a full professor since 1994, joined the college's department of entomology as an assistant professor in 1981 and was promoted to associate professor in 1988. For the last 12 years, he chaired the department's graduate selection committee. He also was chairman or co-chairman of nine graduate student committees, served on several other departmental and university committees and was co-adviser of the Sanborn Entomology Club. Mr. Fargo, 44, was a physical fitness enthusiast who participated in triathlons, mountaineering and weightlifting. While on his daily early morning jog near his home in Stillwater, Okla., on Sept. 5, he went into cardiac arrest. He died at St. Francis Medical Center in Tulsa, Okla., on Saturday, 11 days shy of his 45th birthday. He was born in Bradford, Pa., and grew up in Ashtabula. He was senior class president at Harbor High School. Also during his senior year, his family hosted Bjorn Boberg, a Norwegian foreign exchange student whom Mr. Fargo considered a brother. After graduating from high school in 1969, Mr. Fargo attended the Ashtabula branch of Kent State University for two years before transferring to Ohio State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1974. Then he studied at Texas A&M University, where he earned a master's degree in 1977 and a doctorate in 1981. Mr. Fargo was a member of the Phi Sigma, Gamma Sigma Delta and Sigma Xi honor societies. He also belonged to the Entomological Society of America and was a past president of the Southwestern Entomological Society. He was secretary of the Stillwater Elks Lodge, where he had served as esquire for five years. The organization named him "Innovator of the Year" in 1991. Its auxiliary, the Lady Elks, honored Mr. Fargo as "Man of the Year" in 1994. Survivors include his wife of two years, Robin K.; son, Andrew; his father, Robert W. of Ashtabula; and brother, David of Avondale, Pa. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Bethany Lutheran Church, 933 Michigan Ave., Ashtabula
