Hi, Sheila. I'm not sure if this will be of any help or not, but here goes: Just this evening I started reading "The Dam That Could Not Break - An Eyewitness Account of the 1911 Austin Flood" by Marie Kathern Nuschke (originally published in 1960). The first chapter gives a brief history of the towns of Austin and Costello, and describes the building of the dam, how the population swelled with workers of all nationalities, etc. It goes on to say: "It is interesting to recall that the Postmaster, William Toy, had more problems arise with the construction of the dam than any other person on the Main Street." It goes on and on about the problems with the mail, lack of boxes, etc. The concrete dam was constructed in 1909. I have no idea if this William Toy may be related to the Toys you are searching for or not. You might check with the Potter County Historical Society (www.pottercountypa.net/history) to see if there is anything in the newspapers from that time, and I might also suggest that you contact Dottie Bajor, Secretary of the Austin Dam Memorial Association. Perhaps your Toys, in addition to being in McKean County, were also in Potter for a time. Good luck! Maureen M. Yes, I considered it was his name. The reason I am considering his name was something else is because I have been unable to find a Major Toy anywhere in any time on any census or any other lists. I am still trying,, I just cannot find a man by that name who was ever living in the USA.. I keep trying to find him and ask every once in a while if anyone has seen the name or has any suggestions. I wonder where Major Toy was? Thank you, Sheila At 03:38 PM 2/28/2004 -0500, Mike wrote: >"Major" is a fairly common 1800's first name. Major may be his middle name? Maybe his name was William too. Often people are called by their middle names. I sure hope you can find him. sandy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sheila" <hhelser@bright.net> > Yes, I considered it was his name. I am still trying to find a Major Toy somewhere. William Major Toy his son was the firechief in Bradford for a time. Regarding my request for information on the McKean County Genealogy Society, the McKean County Historical Society, and the Bradford Landmark Society: Larry Richmond of the Bradford Landmark Society emailed me privately with the following: From: Bradford Landmark Society <bradland@penn.com> Subject: Re: [PAMCKEAN] Societies in McKean County Date: Monday, 23 February, 2004 8:35 AM The McKean County Genealogical Society meets 3rd Thurs of the Month, in Bradford Area Library 67 West Washington Street Bradford Pa. Genealogical collection is in the UPB Library at Bradford Pennsylvania, which also has census records for this area. any questions you could contact me at the Bradford Landmark Society bradland@penn.com The Bradford Landmark Society has hours 11 am to 2 PM. Mon-Wed-Fri. We Try answer email, but the last year or so both my self and curator have had illness in our families which has slowed email response. Now both of us are now back to normal and I am now back full time at the Bradford Landmark Society. Larry A. Richmond, genealogist/historical researcher, Bradford Landmark Society. It seems we are making some headway with the McKean County Genealogy Society (at least we know when/where they meet; I'll contact the Bradford Library in hopes of getting a contact name for the genealogy society) and the Bradford Landmark Society. I received the recent email from Mike Wennin regarding the McKean County Genealogy Society in Bradford. Does anybody know the contact person for this group? I would like to join. Has anybody had any success with the McKean County Historical Society at Smethport? I have sent several letters over the past year about becoming a member and have never had a response. When I worked at the Courthouse they were putting the finishing touches on their new headquarters in the old jail, so I know they are still in existence. Bradford Landmark Society? I know their hours are limited so I email from their Web site, but emails have never been responded to. Anybody having any suggestions about how to contact the genealogy society, or suggestions on how to receive a response from the latter two would be appreciated. Maureen M. I attended the meeting of the McKean County Genealogy Society in Bradford tonight. I was surprised that no one from this list was there. There was a wealth of information there just from the people in attendance. Many of the folks there did genealogy the hard way before there was an internet. I have been trying to attract those people to our meetings in Cameron County. It is those people who have the actual family photos, bibles, letters, and more. And they are happy to share! Two of the people at the meeting were dubbed "the most knowledgeable people on the history of McKean County there is." Now those are the people you want to get to know! A representative from the Library presented all of the historical and genealogical information that is available from the Public Library and the list was quite extensive. The President of the Society went into great detail on researching a source in England for public records. A member presented an extensive autobiography from a local resident that was packed full of photos and had an interesting layout. And the homemade cookies at the end made the 100 mile round trip worth while! Next meeting is March 18th 7:30 PM Bradford Public Library. Membership in the Society is only $7.50! If you are in the area, you might want to check them out! Mike Wennin Come Visit the Cameron County Genealogy Project! http://www.rootsweb.com/~pacamero

Hi List: Does any one have access to burial records for Colegrove Cemetery??? Robin:
The Cameron County Prothonotary spoke at our Genealogy Club Meeting this past Saturday. He introduced us to a resource that I had not been aware of and I thought that some of you might not be either. They are the Oyer and Terminer, a/k/a Quarter Session papers housed in the Clerk of Courts section of your County Courthouse - the Prothonotary's Office in Cameron County. Most of these papers were generated from criminal cases, but they also contain the Coroner's Inquisitions, at least in Cameron County. This is a new source of death information that goes back to 1861 here and is proving to be a valuable source of information that had not been previously used here. We are finding that not every death was investigated. We are also finding relatives who had scrapes with the law! If nothing else, they are great reading! One guy "under the influence of the Devil" murdered his wife, an accused lover and himself. Natural causes of death were deemed, "visits from God." Some have very gory details, especially if they were crushed by a train, which seemed to be common in the 1870's & 80's. Anyway...hopefully this may help someone. While doing some research at the Cameron County Courthouse, I came across a coroner's inquisition for the death of Morgan HASSEY of McKean County. He died 10-31-1883.
