A native of Bradford, Pa., and resident of Niagara Falls, Sister Bigosinski was a member of the Congregation of Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph and served as general minister from 1966 to 1970. Groundbreaking for Hilbert College, an institution founded by the Franciscan Sisters, was held during her term of office. A graduate of the old Mount St. Joseph College, now Medaille College, and the Catholic University of America, Sister Bigosinski was an elementary-school teacher and principal, a social worker and administrator. In the Buffalo Diocese, she taught at Corpus Christi School in Buffalo and St. Barnabas School in Depew. Sister Bigosinski was a social worker at St. Joseph Hospital in Cheektowaga and was an administrator at the former St. Anthony's Home for the Aged in the Town of Hamburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9 a.m. Friday in Immaculate Conception Convent Chapel, 5286 South Park Ave., Town of Hamburg. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Cheektowaga.

NELSON Longtime Alaska homesteader George Everett Nelson, 71, died of pneumonia Jan. 11 at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Va., while visiting his daughter, Reta. A memorial service will be held at 1:45 p.m. Friday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Lodge 9365 in Wasilla on Knik Road. A buffet will immediately follow at the lodge. Mr. Nelson was born July 20, 1920, in Bradford, Pa. He graduated in 1940 from Leesburg High School in Leesburg, Fla. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran during World War II. Mr. Nelson moved to Alaska in the 1950s. He owned and operated Nelson's Trading Post near Fairbanks for about 10 years. He started a homestead at Strelna Lake on the Chitina-McCarthy Highway, Nelson's Lakeside Campsites, in 1967 where he owned a trading post, campsites and fished for rainbow trout. He was a sheetmetal worker on the trans-Alaska pipeline in the heating and air conditioning business and was a well-driller. Mr. Nelson liked outdoor life and did personal farming on his homestead. He enjoyed gardening and harvesting his crops. He was a charter member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Leesburg, Fla. Mr. Nelson was very helpful in directing tourists and friends in the Chitina area and enjoyed square dancing. He is survived by his wife, Velma of Wasilla; his daughters, Reta Lawrence of Hampton, Va., and Susan Neip of Chitina; his sons, Dennis of Tacoma, Gary of Herndon, Va., Francis of Palmer, and Daniel Keyes of Pennsylvania; his sisters, Jacqueline Sewell and Jean Dann, both of Moose Pass, and Carol McCall and Virginia Getford, both of Florida; his brother, William of Leesburg; and 19 grandchildren.

Smith: Geophysicist Smith, 70, found major oil fields Charles W. Smith of Del Rio was a well-known geophysicist who got his start after wearing holes in his boots, his son recalled Saturday. Smith, 70, died Thursday after a two-week bout with pneumonia, said his son, Michael, of Canyon Lake. "Dad was a highly respected offshore exploration geophysicist and was responsible for helping find several major oil fields in the Gulf of Mexico." "My father was in the oil business from 1946 to 1984. When he first started in 1946, his boss told him he would get a promotion when Dad got his feet on the ground. "After not getting a raise for 18 months, Dad showed his boss the holes in his boots and said he had his feet on the ground. After that his career started moving upward," Michael Smith said. The elder Smith was active in the Masonic lodge and loved gardening, fishing and other outdoor activities. "He was always willing to go that extra mile to help people. He never put himself first," the son said. Smith was born in Bradford, Pa., on Oct. 18, 1921, and served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific theater during World War II. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma at Norman in 1952. Smith lived in Canyon Lake and Del Rio in the past decade. Other survivors include his wife, Helen J. Smith of Del Rio; a brother, Harold Smith of Norman, Okla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at noon Monday at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North. She was active in volunteer work with Roswell Park Memorial Institute for 20 years and with Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Amherst for 10 years. Interment will follow in Rushville. Mrs. Robinson, 78, of Kenmore, died Tuesday (July 3, 1990) in Buffalo General Hospital after a short illness. She was born in Bradford, Pa., and attended Buffalo State Teachers College and Cornell University, where she graduated in 1934. Mrs. Robinson first worked for Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. as a home service representative. She then was director of the home service department of Southern Union Gas Co. in El Paso, Texas. She returned to this area and wrote about household tips as Lucy Lincoln in The News from 1957 to 1968. Mrs. Robinson then returned to Niagara Mohawk, where she worked again as a home service representative until her retirement in 1977. She was an active member of the Church of the Transfiguration, the American Home Economics Association and the Cornell Club, for which she supervised the annual Christmas cheese sale for many years. She also was active in the Sigma Kappa sorority alumni. She married the late Horace H. Robinson in 1940. Survivors include a daughter, Cadette Finewood of Newark, and two grandchildren.
