She was born in Bradford, Pa., and moved to Buffalo as a child. A longtime member of St. Paul's Cathedral, Mrs. English was the first manager of St. Paul's Episcopal Thrift Shop on Main Street. She also was a member of the cathedral's Board of Women and was a volunteer in numerous church activities. In Quincy, she was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. She was the widow of Joseph H. English. Survivors include a son, Michael R. of Quincy, and four grandchildren. (Condren).

McEvoy, Cuneo Press President Charles L. McEvoy, the former head of Cuneo Press, died Saturday in Central Du Page Hospital, Winfield. He was 76. A North Side resident, Mr. McEvoy was president and chief operating officer of the now-defunct company - a commercial printer of newspaper supplements, books and major magazines - from 1972 to 1989. At one time, Cuneo was one of the nation's largest printing companies, printing Time, Life, Saturday Evening Post and 30 other magazines. In 1947, he joined Neo-Gravure, a Cuneo subsidiary, as a customer contact man. He served as assistant general manager and general manager before becoming vice president of sales in 1954. In 1973, he was elected president and chief operating officer of the parent company after serving as president of Neo-Gravure. A native of Bradford, Pa., he was graduated from Xavier University, Cincinnati. He began studying law at Northwestern University but eventually got a law degree at Chicago-Kent College of Law of Illinois. He also attended the Foreign Service Program at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. During World War II, he served in the Pacific with the Army. Mr. McEvoy was the current vice president of the Cuneo Foundation, a private charitable trust, and a board member of the Catholic Charities of Chicago and Boy Scouts of America. He was past president of Chicago Golf Club, Wheaton. He leaves his wife, Rosemary; a sister, Mary Ellen Marrow; and two brothers, L. Carle and John. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Donnellan Funeral Home, 10045 Skokie Blvd., Skokie. Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. tomorrow in Assumption Catholic Church, 323 W. Illinois St., Chicago. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, 301 Chicago Ave., Evanston.

Grow, 72, professor at UMass Thomas A. Grow, 72, of 24 Montague Road, college professor and author, died Sunday in Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield. He was a professor in the School of Engineering at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst for 36 years. In 1984 he was awarded the Dean's Distinguished Service Award from the School of Engineering. He also served as assistant department head and retired in 1985. He authored a teaching text called "Construction - A Guide for the Profession" published in 1975. Born in Bradford, Pa., he attended schools there, and was a 1938 graduate of Bradford High School. He received his bachelor's degree and master's degrees from the University of Connecticut and Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1947 and 1953, respectively. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and a former president of its Western Massachusetts branch. He also served on the advisory council of the New England Construction Education Program. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and served in the specialized training corps. He lived many years in Leverett, and was a member and deacon of the Leverett Congregational Church for many years. He leaves his wife, the former Geneva Davis; a son, Thomas A. Jr. of Amherst; two daughters, Donna Grow Ives of Bethany, Conn., and Julie Ann Collier of Springfield; a brother, Joseph A. Jr. of Tennessee, and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be Saturday afternoon in the church. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. McCarthy Funeral Home, Greenfield, is in charge. Mr. Scott died after a long illness Thursday at All Saints Hospital in Fort Worth. He was 87. The Bradford, Pa., native was hired by First National Bank of Dallas in 1948 in the trust department. He worked for the bank until 1970. After receiving his bachelor's degree in fine arts from the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania in 1928, Mr. Scott received his law degree from Fordham University in 1939. He also received a doctorate in jurisprudence from Southern Methodist University. Following his retirement, Mr. Scott moved to Fort Worth and became involved in the preservation of Thistle Hill, one of the city's historic landmarks. His family is asking for memorials to be made to this organization. He is survived by his wife, Frances Merrill Scott of Fort Worth; a daughter, Aurease Bradshaw of Garland; a stepson, Dr. Berkeley S. Merrill of Fort Worth; and four grandchildren.

TANNER, CENTENNIAL RUG CHAIRWOMAN There are people who needlepoint. And then there are people who chair the Colorado Centennial Needlepoint Rug Committee. Cara D. Tanner of Greenwood Village was among the latter. She chaired the committee that created a Centennial rug presented to the Colorado Historical Society and placed in the Governor's Mansion library. She also compiled and produced the Centennial Rug Makers' Cookbook, dedicated to the 78 stitchers of the rug. Mrs. Tanner, 72, died April 29 at Aurora Regional Medical Center after suffering heart problems during the preceding year. Mrs. Tanner, born June 2, 1920, in Bradford, Pa., was remembered at a memorial service May 8 at St. Gabriel Episcopal Church in Cherry Hills Village. Per her request, her ashes will be scattered above Loveland Basin Ski Area in the Arapahoe National Forest. Mrs. Tanner was a 1938 graduate of the Madeira School in McLean, Va. She was married Oct. 10, 1948, in Wellesley, Mass., to Donald B. Tanner Jr., a former May D&F executive turned manufacturers' representative. Mrs. Tanner worked for 19 years as vice president of Don Tanner & Associates Inc. In addition to her work on the Centennial rug, Mrs. Tanner was a supporter of the Denver Art Museum, Denver Museum of Natural History, Denver Zoo, Denver Botanic Gardens, KRMA-Channel 6 and Denver Dumb Friends League. Survivors include her husband, who lives in Englewood; her son, D.B. Tanner III of Denver; her daughter, Ann F. Tanner of Denver; a brother, David W. Dennis of Ole Lyme, Conn.; and a sister, Margaret Johnson of Elizabethton, Tenn. Contributions: American Cancer Society, 2255 S.
