She was an officer of local chapters in three states. She most recently served as first vice president of the affiliate in Hudson Village. Mrs. Billington, who lived in Northfield, volunteered at the Canal Visitor's Center of the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area until about three years ago, when her health would not permit it. Mrs. Billington died Sunday at the Wyant Wood Care Center in Fairlawn. She was 89. She was born in Bradford, Pa., and graduated from Glenville High School in Cleveland. She worked for a time at University Hospitals. Mrs. Billington served as president of the East Cleveland League of Women Voters while she lived in the community with her first husband, Floyd J. St. Clair. He was a musician who died in 1951. She later married Dan Billington, an engineer. They moved to New York City where Mrs. Billington chaired a League of Women Voters branch in Manhattan. They later lived in Charlotte, N.C., where she was a local officer. When her husband retired, they moved back to Ohio and settled in Northfield about 1973. Mrs. Billington was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution chapter in Hudson Village. Mrs. Billington was active with the United Methodist Church of Macedonia. She helped establish joint meals with nearby churches on holidays. A daughter, Alyce St. Clair Billington, died in 1982. Mrs. Billington is survived by daughters, Nancy Jean Wilson of San Jose, Calif., and Dr. Peggy-Jeanne St. Clair of Cleveland; a stepson, John H. Billington of Perth Amboy, N.J.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the United Methodist Church of Macedonia, 1280 E. Scott Fargo, formerly of Ashtabula, wrote or contributed to more than 50 scientific publications on insect research. He was recognized in agricultural circles as an expert on ecologically controlling bugs that infest stored grain in farm and commercial elevator facilities. He advocated getting rid of insect pests through natural methods rather than exposing them - and the grain - to chemical pesticides. Mr. Fargo, a full professor since 1994, joined the college's department of entomology as an assistant professor in 1981 and was promoted to associate professor in 1988. For the last 12 years, he chaired the department's graduate selection committee. He also was chairman or co-chairman of nine graduate student committees, served on several other departmental and university committees and was co-adviser of the Sanborn Entomology Club. Mr. Fargo, 44, was a physical fitness enthusiast who participated in triathlons, mountaineering and weightlifting. While on his daily early morning jog near his home in Stillwater, Okla., on Sept. 5, he went into cardiac arrest. He died at St. Francis Medical Center in Tulsa, Okla., on Saturday, 11 days shy of his 45th birthday. He was born in Bradford, Pa., and grew up in Ashtabula. He was senior class president at Harbor High School. Also during his senior year, his family hosted Bjorn Boberg, a Norwegian foreign exchange student whom Mr. Fargo considered a brother. After graduating from high school in 1969, Mr. Fargo attended the Ashtabula branch of Kent State University for two years before transferring to Ohio State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1974. Then he studied at Texas A&M University, where he earned a master's degree in 1977 and a doctorate in 1981. Mr. Fargo was a member of the Phi Sigma, Gamma Sigma Delta and Sigma Xi honor societies. He also belonged to the Entomological Society of America and was a past president of the Southwestern Entomological Society. He was secretary of the Stillwater Elks Lodge, where he had served as esquire for five years. The organization named him "Innovator of the Year" in 1991. Its auxiliary, the Lady Elks, honored Mr. Fargo as "Man of the Year" in 1994. Survivors include his wife of two years, Robin K.; son, Andrew; his father, Robert W. of Ashtabula; and brother, David of Avondale, Pa. But that did not keep her from going to see her son Brendan run his first marathon. He raised more than $2,500 in pledges on behalf of the American Cancer Society when he ran in the 1993 Revco-Cleveland Marathon. "I thought what he was doing was really neat. It's even more neat that he was doing it for me," she said from her bed in a van. Mrs. McCarthy, 54, of Rocky River, died Wednesday at her home. She was a member of St. Christopher Catholic Church. Over the 12-year course of her illness, Mrs. McCarthy, a devout Catholic, made friends through frequent at-home Masses. People who attended the Masses said they came not so much to comfort Mrs. McCarthy, but for what they learned from her courage, humor and acceptance of her situation. Mrs. McCarthy was born in Bradford, Pa., and graduated from Villa Maria College in Erie, Pa. She was a substitute teacher in Lakewood and Rocky River schools, and a real estate agent for HGM Hilltop Realty. She also was a real estate investor. Mrs. McCarthy is survived by her husband, Terrance B.; daughters Colleen S. of Raleigh, N.C., and Megan A. of Rocky River; sons Brendan T. of Denver, and Daniel M. of Orlando, Fla.; mother Dorothea McCoy of Bradford, Pa.; two sisters; and two brothers. Before joining the Crittenden Home, now known as the Brookwood Young Women's Residence, she was a teacher at Disston Junior High School. After the war, she taught history and served as a counselor at Mirror Lake Junior High School until it closed in the early 1960s. She was born in Bradford, Pa., and came here in 1929 from Rixford, Pa. A graduate of Rollins College, Winter Park, she received a master's degree in counseling from Hofstra University, Hempstead, N.Y. She was a past president of St. Petersburg Junior Woman's Club and the Pan-Hellenic Council and a member of the Women's Service League, Interlock, Alpha Phi Sorority and Daughters of the American Revolution.
