Can I offer an easy solution? If you are registered with Rootsweb, you can choose an option for each message board that notifies you of new postings. To do this, go to the McKean County Board's webpage after you have logged in to Rootsweb: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.mckean There will be an option near the top where you can "Add Board to Notifications." About once a day, if things are posted to the board, Rootsweb will send you ONE email with a list of the titles of all the postings for the day and links to each posting. This way, you can scroll down, see if anything is related to your research without having to click on a bunch of emails to delete each one. I have about fifty boards in my notifications list and receive one or two emails a day at most. It is much more efficient than belonging to fifty mailing lists! Note that by doing this, you will NOT get any information that is posted directly to the mailing list (which is why I do both). It only covers what is actually posted on the boards.
Ok the standard reply is if you don't like it unsubscribe!!! Did it ever occur to you that some of us or I might what something else from the list at Mckean than a herd of obits. As for my dislikes or likes it was never said that it was or was not in the boundaries of the list usage, only a suggestion that might remove some of the traffic on the list. Perhaps the idea of the mailing list needs to be clarified. The message boards and the mailing list are for the sharing of information related to genealogy. This includes obituaries. All posts to the message boards are gatewayed to the mailing list. There is no system in place for people to pick and choose from the message boards what they wish to receive via the list/email. As I wrote in my last email to the list, if one finds the email to be bothersome I can only suggest that you unsub yourself from the list and look at the message boards as you have the time or inclination to do so. If you are not sure of how to unsub yourself from the list you may send me an email PRIVATELY (sonoranfour@msn.com) and I will manually remove you so that you no longer receive any email related to McKean County. Simply send your email address and request to be unsubbed from the list. Many obits have been posted in the past week or so. I have yet to find an obituary that relates to my research, but the two seconds it takes to read the subject line and click the delete button really isn't taking up valuable time. Probably 60 or 90 seconds total. And, again, I state that the compiler is within the scope and spirit of the boards, and subsequently the mailing list. It is people like this that make research easier for all of us. Maureen M. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: ANDERSON/BIGLER Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZaB.2ACE/1459 Message Board Post: I am looking for some kind soul to transcribe the obits (if there were any) for the following: Erick G. ANDERSON, b. 28 Sept 1887 in Sweden, d. 21 Feb 1973 (SSDI states Kane, PA); his wife, Euphemia "Famie" LUNDIN, b.2 Jul 1897, d. 1985, her first husband, Harry Sidney BIGLER. Famie & Harry were married in Ridgway on Dec. 16, 1916 and I have not been able to find out any more about him. Any help will be appreciated.
Message Board posts are automically gatewayed to the PA-MCKEAN mailing list, making it convenient for researchers that don't have the time to check the message boards regularly. While I understand that some may become frustrated at the volume of obituaries being posted on the McKean board, and subsequently gatewayed to the list, this is a valuable service. Placing the name of the deceased in the subject line allows for the quick decision on whether to delete the message or to keep it. I believe that asking the compiler to only put the names on the board, and no further data, and then to answer individual email requests for further information is asking too much of the compiler's time, but the decision ultimately rests with the compiler. The compiler is within the scope, and spirit, of the McKean Board guidelines and I would certainly encourage its continuance. I am well aware of the time expended on undertaking such a task and appreciate the efforts being made. Unsubscribing from the list is an option that some may wish to pursue if the obituary posts get to be too bothersome. Maureen M.
