All, According to: Charles Scott Williams, "History of Lycoming College," (King Brothers, Inc.: Baltimore, 1959), Lycoming College has gone through several name changes and has been known as: Williamsport Academy - The academy was incorporated on 2 April 1811. Dickinson Seminary - Founder Rev. B. H. Crever helped to purchase the Academy property on 5 Jan 1848, it was to be an auxiliary to the Dickinson College in Carlisle, run by the Methodist church. School open for students on 14 Sep 1848. Williamsport Dickinson Junior College - In 1929 the Seminary began giving Junior College work. In 1935 Dr. Long reported that the Seminary was fully accredited and that it was the first fully accredited Junior College in Pennsylvania. Lycoming College - 17 Oct 1946, a committee was appointed to contact University Senate and Dickinson College concerning four year college. 8 May 1947, State Council of Education of Pennsylvania officially approves institution as a four year Liberal Arts College with authority to grant Baccalaureate degrees in Arts and Sciences. 23 Oct 1947, the name Lycoming was selected by the Board of Directors as the name for the new college.
