    1. Lycoming College/Charles Dodson Eldred
    2. Kevin, Thank you for the look-up. May I impose on you for one more thing? Could you tell me who sold the land that the Lycoming College bought to build their academy? I know you said that you did not see Charles D. Eldred as a trustee, but maybe I am reading the following incorrectly: "In 1868 he was appointed collector of tolls for the West Branch canal at Williamsport, and reappointed the two succeeding years. He was a trustee when the grounds were purchased on which Dickinson Seminary is located, and the first part of that structure was erected during his term of trusteeship." Could this mean that he was a trustee with some outfit instead of a trustee of Dickinson Seminary? Thanks for your help, Eldred

Thomas Bowman - Williamsport Rev. Samuel Briston - Williamsport Rev. George Guyer - Williamsport John Smith - Williamsport Robert Fleming - Williamsport Charles Low - Williamsport John W. Maynard - Williamsport Robert Faries - Williamsport Henry Hartman - Williamsport David R. Eldred Kevin, Your history of Lycoming College was very good. Would your "History of Lycoming College" book mention Charles Dodson ELDRED? He was a trustee when the grounds were purchased on which Dickinson Seminary is located, and the first part of that structure was erected during his term of trusteeship. I am not able to verify that through the college, although I have it from a couple of sources. Charles D. ELDRED was very influential in the history of Williamsport and the surrounding area. By a close vote, Eldred Township was named in his honor. Eldred

    2. Sholder, Kevin L
    3. All, According to: Charles Scott Williams, "History of Lycoming College," (King Brothers, Inc.: Baltimore, 1959), Lycoming College has gone through several name changes and has been known as: Williamsport Academy - The academy was incorporated on 2 April 1811. Dickinson Seminary - Founder Rev. B. H. Crever helped to purchase the Academy property on 5 Jan 1848, it was to be an auxiliary to the Dickinson College in Carlisle, run by the Methodist church. School open for students on 14 Sep 1848. Williamsport Dickinson Junior College - In 1929 the Seminary began giving Junior College work. In 1935 Dr. Long reported that the Seminary was fully accredited and that it was the first fully accredited Junior College in Pennsylvania. Lycoming College - 17 Oct 1946, a committee was appointed to contact University Senate and Dickinson College concerning four year college. 8 May 1947, State Council of Education of Pennsylvania officially approves institution as a four year Liberal Arts College with authority to grant Baccalaureate degrees in Arts and Sciences. 23 Oct 1947, the name Lycoming was selected by the Board of Directors as the name for the new college. Hope that this answers those questions. Kevin L. Sholder rdrunner@siscom.net Don't wait to make your Son a great man. 3. Margaret, If you look on a contemporary map, Picture Rocks is "smack dab" in the middle of the intersection of Highway 220 and 864. (Most of the town is on the East side of the intersection) Looks like not quite half of Picture Rocks is in Wolf Township and the rest in Penn Township. 3. Accurate geographical locations can be searched very easily through several data bases, but the US Geological Survey national mapping service is one of the easiest and most complete. Even if you don't know the exact spelling, you can experiment with what you think it might be. The web page of the USGS is at http://www.usgs.gov and click on Geographic Names on the right hand side. Then, scroll down for the Query information. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marge Johnson" <mjohn1@powerbank.net> To: <PALYCOMI-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, December 27, 2001 8:06 AM Subject: Re: Picture Rocks/Renovo > Are you using mapblast to find this information? 2. Renovo used to be a thriving railroad town. With the demise of railroads, the town pretty much "went under." It's still there and still populated, but there isn't much there except for the houses and a couple of bars. The fall foilage there is outstanding though, for a Sunday afternoon drive. Picture Rocks, as someone else said, is near Hughesville. You reach it by heading North on PA Route 220, and it's (this is a guess) about 5 miles North of Hughesville. Vicki
