    1. how to locate Mr. & Mrs. Mark Updegraff
    2. Dora Smith
    3. Can anyone on this list please tell me how to get in touch with Mr. and Mrs. Mark Updegraff, who wrote a web page on the Op den graeff's for the Lycoming County Genealogy Society? A group of us working on Updegraff family history have some questions about their page. One or both of them may have been members of this list, since another of our group contacted the list owner of this list, and got told Mrs. Mark Updegraff's name - but not how to contact her! 1. James or Raymond Wagner
    2. Scott & Carla Warner
    3. Hello, I am looking for information on James Penrose Wagner b.27 April 1908 d. 8 March 1989 in Williamsport, PA or his brother Raymond (no dates known at this time) believed to have resided in Montoursville at the time of his death . From searching SSDI I ran across a Raymond Wagner SSN-173-07-4090 b.22 June 1902 d.Apr 1972. I'm no sure if this is James brother or not, but judging by dates and what little info I have it's possible. In any case I'm looking for info on either of these men so I can either connect them or learn who their parents were. I have and obit for James which reads as follows: Williamsport Sun-Gazette Wed March 8th 1989 James P. Wagner, 80, a resident of Lysock View since last September19, died there at 1:45 a.m. today, Wednesday March 8, 1989. He had retired from the former Syntex Fabrics here. Mr. Wagner was a member of the Moose Lodge 145. Born April 27 1908, at Lewistown, he was the son of John and Susanna Wagner. Survivng are two sons, James H and William M. both of Beavertown and three grandchildren. The funeral and burial will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are being handled by McCarty-Thomas, 557 East Water Street, Hughesville. Any info on either of the men would be greatly appreciated, as my living relatives mentioned above were unable to give me any further information than what I've got I know quite a bit of info on James before he went to Lycoming Co, but nothing of his life there or if I have any living relatives in that area. Thanks Carla Wagner Warner

    1. Father Michael Stack
    2. Hi - Is anyone familiar with the procedure to follow in order to obtain personal background information of a priest assigned to the Diocese of Scranton during the late 19th century? I'm looking for information about an ancestor: Father Michael Stack (of which I know very little.) According to family oral history, Father Stack was the brother of my maternal great-greatgrandmother (Johanna Stack.) Father Stack was born in Ireland in 1843 and died in Scranton in 1889 (there are different versions of the exact circumstances and place of death in Scranton.) He's buried in the Priest's Plot of Cathedral Cemetary. He was educated at St. Charles Seminary in Philadelphia and was the first pastor of Annunciation Church in Williamsport. In December 1871, Father Stack challenged Bishop O'Hara in Lycoming County Court of Common Pleas over the right of the bishop to transfer pastors (The Stack-O'Hara Controversy.) He was suspended from the priesthood by Bishop O'Hara, and as a suspended priest, he did not receive any income from a parish or the Diocese, so (according to The Catholic Light Historical Issue of 1916), Father Stack had been engaged in writing for newspapers and selling insurance. But (according to Envisioning Faith: The Pictorial History of the Diocese of Scranton) Father Stack, in the end, accepted the decision of the courts (in Bishop O'Hara's favor) and did penance in a monestary in Rome. If anyone can help me, I'd really appreciate it. Nellie

    3. I really don't know. I have these dates and information that I gave to the list, but I don't have any documentation as to where I got them from. I believe I wrote them down out of his obituary in 1994, but I can't be for sure. My mom was the one who recently clued me into his brothers and the fact that he died in a state hospital. I am positive that he was in Lycoming County by 1916, because almost all 14 of his children were born in Lycoming. Some I know for sure because I do have their obituaries. I really couldn't tell you if that's the correct hospital or not. I tried looking up John Henry Paulus in the Social Security Death Index and never found him, and that's when my mom said that she was surprised, since he died in a State Hospital. It's likely they lived in Maryland. It's likely I could be wrong about his birth place or his marriage place, or any of his information. I am desperately seeking cousins who are somewhere out there on the internet. Those I met in 1994 refuse to reply to any of my "snail mail", aside from sending a signed (but no letter) Christmas card. My grandmother is lucid at some times and other times she says she's packing up to go help her mother with the children. Her mother and all but 2 of her siblings have been deceased for years. Or just any tidbit. I'm sorry that I don't know for sure, but this is what I have so far, and I really hope that something looks familiar to someone out there. Loni -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, September 26, 1999 5:57 PM To: [email protected] Subject: (no subject) Loni, Could you be looking in wrong county for John Henry Paules? I don't have enough information to steer you correctly, but there is a Silver Springs on the Carlisle Pike on the way from Harrisburg to Carlisle. You mentioned a cemetery near Carlisle, PA, and Silver Springs is not too far away. Also you mentioned he was married in Hagerstown, MD which is also not too far away. Also you mentioned that he died in a State Hospital. There is a large State Hospital at 11th and Maclay in Harrisburg, PA Carlisle is the county seat for Cumberland Co. Let me know if I can help and also if this puts you on the right path. Eldred

    1. PAULUS bef. 1892 - Present
    2. Loni Voorhis
    3. I'm hoping to make a break in this brick wall I have had on my PAULUS family, going on 8 years now. The information I have so far is as follows: Unknown Paulus parents had: 1) John Henry Paulus born 12 May 1892 in Lycoming Co, PA. I have been told Silver Springs, but I have had people tell me there is no such place as Silver Springs. he married 18 Feb 1915 in Hagerstown, Washington Co, Maryland to Matilda M. MORTON. He died 9 Nov 1960 in a State Hospital in PA. I believe he may be buried in Youngs United Cemetery, Perry County, PA. There were 14 children from this marriage (3 still live). Many of these children are buried in Youngs United. John Henry Paulus is my great-grandfather. 2) Murray PAULUS married Florence. No further information. 3) David PAULUS married Mary. No further information. The following surnames are known to be linked to the family, but we haven't figured out how, just yet: DONLEY, SHANK, LICKEL, RHODES, SOUDERS and BROWNAWELL. My maternal grandmother (daughter of John Henry Paulus) once meantioned that a cemetery nearby to her house in Carlisle was also had Paulus relatives. She has since been placed in a nursing home for Alzheimers and my own bad memory cannot remember if this was Youngs United, or another cemetery. I also do not remember what street she lived on, as they have gone to a P.O. box since her going to the nursing home. I can probably get the name of the street from my cousin, once she returns from vacation. If any of this looks familiar to you, or you have any resources that may be of help to me, I would greatly appreciate your looking. My web site has what information I do have available to me (all of it through John Henry's lineage). I am also willing to help via email if you have trouble with my site (I have been having problems with my Paulus link), or you want to bypass that. ======================================= Loni (Adams) Voorhis [email protected] or [email protected] ADAMS ANDREWS ANDRUS/ANDDRUS BASTIAN BERSTLER/BOERSTLER/BURSTLER/BORSTLER BROWN(E) CALEY CAMPBELL FISCHER GROY GYSEL HOFFER KAYLOR KEMP KENDALL KNIGHT LESHER MCCLELLAN MORTON PAULUS SCOTT THOMAS and TYLER Genealogy pages: Surnames A-G: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Fields/4390/roots.html Surnames H-N: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Fields/4390/rootshn.html Surnames O-Z: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Fields/4390/rootsoz.html SNAIL MAIL ON REQUEST ... we are linked by blood, and blood is memory without language. 3. Margie, Thanks for your e-mail. We've been away. That's why my reply is late. From your experience, what's the best method to contact the Muncy HS---phone, snail mail? I know that undoubtedly the best is a personal visit, but first, I'd like to have an idea as to whether or not they can help. I'm looking for info on Elizabeth Shoemaker Carter who died in 1851 at the home of her son-in-law, Samuel Kyle, in Milton. At the time of her death, she was a resident of Lycoming Co. even though she died in Northumberland Co. Sam K's wife was Sarah Jane Carter. I have some questionable info on Elizabeth's parents and would like to sort out the facts. Also, I'd give my right arm (at least my left arm!) to discover anything about her hsband, In the family, he was known as Christian Carter but I'm beginning to suspect that Christian was his middle name. Well, this is long and probably confusing, but thanks for your interest. Bottom line: yes, I'd like to know who your Shoemakers in the Muncy area were. Barbara

They have done great so far, I was thrilled to find what I did. Paula Ruwersma
