    3. Hi, My question concerns the availability of unfilmed Hazleton newspapers. Does anyone know if hard copies of any papers from Jan 1887 are available for the public to copy? Ed, Phoenix.

    3. Hello Ed, If you mean by hard copies, the original newspapers, I don't believe they exist now. Once microfilming was done, the originals were destroyed. Having been printed on cheap paper, they were not meant to survive and would probably have fallen to dust by now anyway. The Hazleton newspaper being printed in JAN 1887 was the Daily Sentinel. It is available on microfilm in at least two locations I that I know: the Hazleton Public Library and the Luzerne Co. Historical Society in Wilkes-Barre. There was also a mining journal for the Hazleton area called The Colliery Engineer, which can be found op microfilm at the Hazleton library. The holdings are short, covering only 2 JAN 1886 to AUG 1887. I don't know where else any of these may be available, but it's about time that Ancestry adds some of the newspapers of NE Pennsylvania to their database. Best wishes, Doug Nicol Norman D.
