    3. Does anyone know how I might be able to get a copy of an obit from the year 1935 from the Hazleton Standard-Sentinel Newspaper. I can't tell from the Hazleton Library if they have it. I'm looking for an obit for Dorothy Schmalzried on Feb 21, 1935. And does anyone know if there is an index for obits for other years of the Hazleton Standard-Sentinel Newspaper? Thanks for any help and guidance, Rich --------------------------------- It's here! Your new message! Get new email alerts with the free Yahoo! Toolbar.

    3. Hello Rich, There is a large gap in available microfilms of the various Hazleton newspapers from 1 JUL 1908 until 1 JAN 1935. Not even the newspaper office has copies from those years. However, since you are looking for an obituary for 21 FEB 1935, you are probably in luck. You don't say whether the date you give is that of death or of the actual obit, but the library should be able to provide a copy. Make sure that you ask for the obituary and not just the brief death notice. There is a published set of indexes for the earlier versions of the newspaper in four volumes by Norm Drasher and available through Clossen Press. Not only are obituaries indexed, but births, marriages, naturalizations and just about any other event of genealogical value. The dates covered are from JUL 1889 through DEC 1902. Hope this helps, Doug Nicol Norman D. Nicol, Ph.D. Professional Genealogist/Family Historian Specializing in NE Pennsylvania, England, esp. Cornwall, and Scotland

    3. The Hazelton library does have the newspaper on film. Perhaps if you call or write they would be willing to make a copy and send it since you have the date. I did a look-up several years ago and found the ref dept. very helpful. You might also try the Historical Society. I believe they have a web site but don't have the address at hand.
