    3. I am a new subscriber to this list. I am trying to find out if Mark Comer, who appears on the 1880 Census in Plains, Luzerne, is the brother of my gt. gt. grandfather Patrick Comer, born about 1843 Ireland, who resided in England. On the 1861 Census in Staffordshire, England, Patrick had a brother Mark, who I have been unable to find a marriage or a death for in England. I am hoping that the Mark, below, is his brother. 1880 Census - Plains, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania Mark Comer - age 35 b. Ireland - Coal Miner - Parents born in Ireland Mary Comer - age 30 b. Ireland - Wife - Parents born in Ireland John Comer - age 7 b. Pennsylvania - at school - Parents born in Ireland Mary E.Comer - age 5 b. Pennsylvania - at school - Parents born in Ireland Rose A. Comer - age 4 months b. Pennsylvania - Parents born in Ireland Mary Cunaboy - age 69 - Mother-in-Law - Widow - b. Ireland - Parents born in Ireland I would be glad to hear from anyone who is researching the Comer family in Plains. There was also a Luke Comer living with Mark Comer in Plains in 1870. I think he could be related to Mark and Patrick. Regards, Anne in Lancashire, England

Mr. Comer, who was one of the oldest miners in this part of the anthracite region, came to this country from Ireland fifty-five years ago. Soon after his arrival he came to Plains, where he took up his residence and began work in sinking the mine in which he met the accident which resulted in his death. When the mine was in full operation Mr. Comer secured a position as a miner and ever since that time until Saturday worked in that same mine. All during these long years of toll he never met with an accident until Saturday. The announcement of his death came as a great shock to the mine workers of Plains and the officals of the Lehigh Valley Coal Co., who held him the highest esteem. He is survived by two daughters, Mr. Luke Corcoran and Miss Polly. The funeral will take place Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with services in Sacred heart church. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart cemetery. --------------------------------------------------- Date: 1908-04-13; Paper: Wilkes Barre Times Leader Luke Comer, one of the oldest miners in this section of the anthracite district, was seriously if not fatally injured while at work in the Henry colliery Saturday afternoon. Mr. Comer, who is looked upon as one of the most responsible miners in the anthracite region, was in the act of prying loose a piece of coal when it fell catching him. Fellow workman rushed his assistance and soon had him from underneath the coal, which was slowly but surely crushing out his life. ---------------------------------------- Debby Dew-Malecki - in South Carolina surmay@sccoast.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "pneanne" <pne.anne@ntlworld.com> To: <paluzern@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 14, 2007 5:19 PM Subject: [PALUZERN] COMER FAMILY, PLAINS, LUZERNE > I am a new subscriber to this list. 3. Hello Debby, Thank you very much for finding this wonderful information about Mark and Luke Comer. I appreciate it very much. There is just one query. In the information for Luke Comer, it states that he was survived by two daughters, Mr. Luke Corcoran and Miss Polly. Do you think this should be Mrs. Luke Corcoran? Thanks again, Anne in Lancashire, England. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Debra Dew-Malecki" <surmay@sccoast.net> To: <paluzern@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 17, 2007 6:50 PM Subject: Re: [PALUZERN] COMER FAMILY, PLAINS, LUZERNE > Date: 1893-01-25; Paper: The Daily Times > > Mark Comer, one of the oldest and most repected citizens of Plains died > yesterday. > > -------------------------------- > Date: 1893-01-27; Paper: The Daily Times > > The remains of Mark Comer, recently deceased were interred in the > Plains > Catholic cemetery yesterday. 3. Debby kindly sent me information from the The Daily Times 1893-01-27 about the death of Mark Comer and also the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader 1908-04-15 about the death of Luke Comer. Please can someone tell me if there would likely to be obituaries in the newspapers from the families. The main reason for my Comer research is to try to ascertain which part of Ireland they came from. I know from the articles that they were buried at Sacred Heart Church in Plains, but I don't think this church was built in the in the 1860's when Mark Comer married Mary Cunaboy and Luke Comer married his second wife Honor Duffy. Does anyone know which Roman Catholic Church these couples were likely to have been married at?
