Mauch Chunk, now Jim Thorpe, is located in Carbon County. It is the county seat. It was incorporated as a town in 1850. At that time, the population was 2,557. There was also an area known as Mauch Chunk Township which consisted of the area north and west of the town. It included the areas of the "Liberties" and present day Nesquehoning.
